Let’s talk about postmodernism psychotherapy together (I)
We talk about what postmodernism is, and we also mentioned the social construction theory
talk about several major changes in postmodern psychology therapy compared with the modern paradigm psychotherapy
Today we will talk about the concept of social treatment
1. What is social treatment
broad social treatment refers to a general term that emphasizes the form of treatment in the social environment and interpersonal aspects rather than the internal aspects of the spirit. It includes group therapy, psychological drama and other forms.
narrowly meaning social therapy refers to social therapy based on performance theory pioneered by contemporary American psychologists and advocates of postmodern psychology thoughts Fred Newman, Louis Hertzman and others in the 1970s. It is also a therapy we focus on today because it opposes diagnostic methods in modern psychotherapy and emphasizes the use of performance methods in treatment, also known as performance therapy .
Since the theoretical focus of social therapy shifts from the focus of modern psychotherapy on the internal cognitive structure of individuals to social, historical and cultural aspects, and fully reflects the super-individuality, creativity and perspective diversity of the postmodern spirit in methods, it has become one of the most influential theoretical schools in the postmodernist thoughts in the West, especially in the American psychology community.
2. Newman's personal affairs
The founder of social therapy Fred Newman graduated from Stanford University in 1963 with a doctorate degree in Philosophy of Science . Newman's interests cover many fields, and it can be said that it combines philosophers, psychotherapists, social activists, playwrights, and drama directors. Since the founding of the Eastern Institute of Short-term Psychological Therapy in the 1970s, it has been committed to training psychological counseling and treatment professionals, and to promote social treatment methods in various forms in social practice. Newman often brings his work to the stage at the Castillo Cultural Center in New York and serves as art director in person. At the same time, he also founded the special program "Treat the United States" on , which had good results.
As the trendsetter of postmodern thought in the Western world, Newman is critical of modern American society and has made many achievements in the relationship between psychology and politics. He has made extensive tour speeches in the United States, the United Kingdom and other places on issues in this field. Newman is not only a practitioner of psychotherapy and a consultant to community organizations, but also a practitioner who is passionate about social transformation. In his efforts to form a third party in the United States, Newman can be regarded as an active core figure.
Due to its achievements and influence in many fields, the social therapy founded by Newman is rich in diversity, which not only reflects the wisdom of a philosopher and the imagination and creativity of a playwright, but also reflects the salvation and practical spirit of a psychotherapist and a social activist. Currently, Newman's works on social therapy include: "The Myth of Psychology"; "Lev Vygotsky: The Revolutionary Scientist"; "Let Us Develop! Guidance for the Continuing Personal Growth; "Non-scientific Psychology: A Method of Understanding the Culture of Human Life-Performance"; "Performance in Life-Practice-Philosophical Guidance", etc., and more than ten plays. When evaluating Newman's work, American postmodern psychologist Gegen pointed out that "in Newman, philosophy becomes an action, and action becomes a method to construct a happy life, and life becomes a wonderful existence and a vibrant adventure in developing historical and social relations."
Next, let’s talk about Newman’s reflection and criticism of modern paradigm psychotherapy .
