Chateau Pichon-Longueville Baron is located in the famous wine-producing village of Pauillac in Bordeaux. It was rated as a second-class winery in the 1855MedocClassification. It is a famous "legendary" winery in the entire Bordeaux production region.
The creation of Chateau Pichon Baron can be traced back to the end of the 17th century. Since Louis XIV ascended the French throne in 1661, it is also known as Grand Siècle. In 1689 Pierre Desmezures de Rauzan, the great wine merchant of Latour and manager of the famous domain of de Margaux, purchased the vines located next to the Latour estate where he founded Enclos Rauzan. The vines were part of the dowry of his daughter Thérèse when she married Baron Jacques Pichon de Longueville in 1694, the year Pichon Longueville was founded. Baron Raoul was so proud of his property that he owned the magnificent castle we know today, which was built in 1851 and was inspired by the Renaissance style. Since then, the chateau with its two iconic towers has occupied a proud position in the heart of the vineyard with unparalleled romanticism and charm. In 1855, on the occasion of the World's Fair, the wine was awarded the title of Second Class Grand Cru, based on the classification requested by Emperor Napoleon III, who wanted to commend the fine wines of Bordeaux. In 1933, the Pichon de Longueville family sold the property to the Bouteiller family, who managed Château Pichon Baron for more than 50 years.
Chateau Pichon Baron was acquired by French insurance giant AXA Millésimes in 1987, with the goal of allowing high-quality wines from vineyards with a glorious history to reach their full potential. On the basis of the competition for the Center Pompidou, the project for the construction of a new operational building was launched, thus entering a new legendary period. . In 1988 work began on the comprehensive reconstruction of the vat room and cellars as well as the renovation of the castle. Since then, the 19th-century castle has been magnified by a water mirror that stretches at the foot of the castle. Since 2008, beneath its silvery reflections hides an underground wine cellar worthy of the Nautilus, equally majestic because of its openings towards the water and sky. This underground cellar completes the development of production excellence, adhering to the purest tradition of the great Pauillac. Currently, the general manager of the winery is Christian Seely. He took office in 2000. He strongly advocates the concept of "quality first" and leads the winery team to work tirelessly to create a high reputation for Chateau Baron.
Pauillac is one of the Medoc vineyard production areas in Bordeaux, located on the left bank of the Gironde River about forty kilometers north of Bordeaux. Made up of Quaternary gravels, boulders and sand typical of the appellation, this land is a paradise for viticulture. The composition of the subsoil is conducive to storing rainwater for the roots, while the topography consisting of cos or hills naturally enhances drainage. The Pichon Baron vineyard covers an area of 73 hectares, covered with high-quality gravel soil. This unique soil, low in nutrients and without excess moisture, nourishes a small amount of different varieties of vines with an average age of 35 years. The team at the property is committed to consistently producing wines of exceptional quality while respecting the character of this great terroir. Therefore, a very strict selection of the oldest vines is used exclusively to develop the winery's Grand Vin Château Pichon Baron, with a limited number of bottles to produce only the best. An active commitment to environmental protection aims to protect this unique heritage.
Baron Pichon’s extensive vineyards are composed of 65% Cabernet , 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot , so the plots have been carefully divided. Shaped like a piece of goldsmithing, each plot benefits from precise work based on its contours. The great terroir of Butte de Pichon Baron is the estate's historic parcel, already in production when it was created in 1694, specifically for the production of Grand Vin, which today represents the main part of its blends. At Chateau Pichon Baron, cultivation is done in a traditional way with great care. It takes place year-round, with a constant focus on improving quality and controlling yields. The planting density is 9,000 plants/ha, with a limited yield per plant per plot, depending on tree age and grape variety.
Harvesting is done entirely by hand to keep the grapes in good condition. Grape bunches are selected based on grape variety, age of vines and plot of land. This classification is an important operation that requires trained personnel capable of respecting the different ripeness levels of the vineyards.
