A new study found that there is a relationship between
Childhood behavior difficulties
and mental health problems in adolescents.
22% of children with anxiety problems
had emotional problems during adolescence.
Researchers hope that
can predict and intervene as soon as possible in the future.
People often say that seeing old age at the age of 3, so can childhood behaviors also be discovered for the mental health of adolescents at the age of 3? Researchers at the University of Cambridge, London, UK and , Royal Holloway College, University of London, conducted a study on the Relationship between Child Behavior and Adolescent Mental Health. This study was published last year in the famous journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology. The
study conducted a retrospective controlled study of historical data from 6,744 teenagers (ages 10-16 years old). The data also contained information on the socio-economic status of children, including family income and their parents' education level. The results of the study were somewhat surprising:
- 22% Children with anxiety problems developed emotional problems during adolescence;
- 24% Children with behavioral problems showed "anxiety, emotional and inattention problems" during adolescence;
- About 17% Children with emotional, ADHD and exercise problems developed inattention problems during adolescence.
Researchers also found that children with behavioral difficulties are more likely to encounter psychological problems in adolescence if they do not receive good care and education during childhood.
Children of any age will be affected by anxiety and other mental health conditions. Children can start showing anxiety symptoms as early as 3 or 4 years old , but not every child with anxiety disorder will start showing symptoms or behavioral problems within this age range. Every child is different, and different factors will cause their anxiety, such as parents' concerns, home environment, friendship between friends, etc.
The biggest concern
is an unresolved anxiety during childhood,
causes mental health problems during adolescence,
such as behavioral problems,
Emotional regulation problems
, as well as attention and ADHD.
This study gave us the tip: As parents, when children are young, they should learn to pay attention to their emotional changes, spend more time with them, and respond positively to their problems.
We parents should not be perfunctory about their children's problems or emotions because they are busy. If this happens, it will lead to their anxiety that they are not paid attention to and cared about. If the problem is not well solved in childhood, then this research tells us that behavioral problems, inattention, and emotional regulation problems may develop into teenage adolescence as we grow up.
If you find that your child often shows anxiety, emotional instability, etc., take some time to communicate with him more, such as actively helping them eliminate negative thoughts about something, encouraging him to participate in some activities he is good at, etc....
We must remember that from preschool to teenagers, we parents have many opportunities to improve their children's psychological problems and build a healthy mentality. At the same time, the mental development of a young man has not been perfected yet. Don’t label your child too early. Actively interact and communicate with him and become the leader of his mental development.
