Hello, Hello everyone

Here is Yinao Cloud Research Circle , I am a classmate of Dahu~

"The paper was rejected again", "The meeting was held today", "I am still a single dog", "The tutor pushes me", "The National Day is about to pay for participants", "The hairline is getting higher and higher", " Intra-collect "... As a "senior" scientific research dog with three years of master's and four years of career, nothing is more "worry" than these!

is the case in the capitals that are full of volumes. Will graduate students in other countries around the world be "more fragrant"?

A article published in Nature Biotechnology (Q1, IF=68.164) "Evidence for a mental health crisis in graduate education》 reveals the answer to us.

Several researchers from UT Health Center in San Antonio, Texas, Kentucky and St. Mary’s University conducted a comprehensive survey via social media and email using a clinically validated anxiety (GAD07) and depression (PHQ09) scale.

2279 graduate students from 234 institutions participated in the survey, of which 90% were doctoral students and 10% were master students.

participants covered various research fields, including Bioscience , physics, engineering, humanities and social sciences and other fields.

Survey results show that:

First, , Postgraduate students are more than six times more likely to suffer from depression and anxiety disorder than the general population. 41% of graduate students scored moderate to severe anxiety on the GAD07 scale, while this proportion was 6%. 39% of graduate students had a mental health status in the range of moderate to severe depression, while the percentage of the general population in this range measured using the same scale was 6% (Fig. 1a).

Next, In order to better understand the factors that affect the prevalence of anxiety and depression in this population than the general population, they also tested differences in mental health status among different genders, as well as the following factors related to perceived work-life balance and guidance quality as follows:

i. Transgender populations have an increased risk of depression and anxiety; women are more likely to develop mental illness than men (Figure 1b).

ii. Work-life balance is related to physical and mental health: When asked whether participants agree with the statement that “I have a good work-life balance”, 56% of graduate students who have experienced moderate to severe anxiety disagree with this statement, compared with 24% of those who agree. Furthermore, among those graduate students with depression, 55% disagree with this statement, while only 21% agree (Fig. 1c).

Finally, researchers also explored the impact of the relationship between tutors and graduate students on the research results . Among graduate students who have experienced anxiety and/or depression, 50% disagree with their supervisor providing “real” guidance, while the percentages of consent were 36% and 33%, respectively (Figure 1d).

Most people who have experienced anxiety (49%) and depression (50%) do not think their mentors have provided them with adequate support, while the proportion of consent was 35% and 32%, respectively.

When asked if their mentors have a positive impact on their emotional or mental health, 48% of people with anxiety and 47% of people with depression and 34% and 31% of people with depression disagreed.

In addition, most graduate students experiencing anxiety and/or depression do not consider their supervisor a resource for their careers.

These data indicate that positive and positive guidance relationships between graduate students and their supervisors are significantly associated with less anxiety and depression.

After obtaining this "desperate" result, researchers also called on institutions to increase more opportunities to provide graduate students with mental health support, and also called on the academic community to take action to explore intervention strategies that can solve the mental health crisis of graduate students. Only through strong and proven interventions can the academic community help those who are undergoing academic training.

In short, what the editor wants to say is that the road to graduate school is "the road is long and arduous". On the way, the result is Buddhist, the process is done, and the reconciliation with yourself is the key to the "elegant" graduate school journey.

I hope you and me on the road of research can get their golden key and move towards a psychological smooth road!
