Peng Zhen began to come into contact with red ideas in 1922 and joined the revolutionary team the following year. During the Northern Expedition, he organized and led the movements of the workers, agriculture and academics in Shanxi, and supported Feng Yuxiang's National Alliance to fight against the warlords entrenched in the Central Plains. After the failure of the Revolution, he immediately moved to the underground front. When he was active in Tianjin in 1929, he was betrayed by a traitor and was immediately arrested and imprisoned.

The enemy threatened and tempted him, wanting him to betray communism and betray comrades. Peng Zhen naturally refused. He fought tenaciously with the enemy and would rather die than betray the enemy. In 1935, he was released and immediately contacted the party organization again and continued to engage in revolutionary work. In early 1937, the Party Central Committee held a National Congress in Yan'an, and Peng Zhen was invited to attend the meeting.

Chairman Mao had heard of his name for a long time, warmly received him, and praised him for his good work in the enemy-occupied area and helped the party organizations in North China through the most difficult period. Peng Zhen was flattered and repeatedly refused to say that this was all the credit made by the comrades and he did not dare to take it alone. Peng Zhen's modestness won Chairman Mao's favor, and the Chairman valued him more and more. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, the Chairman appointed him as the top leader of the Jin-Cha-Hebei Branch of the Communist Party of China. He then joined forces with Marshal Nie to jointly build the Jin-Cha-Hebei Military Region, and united the people to support the Eighth Route Army in fighting against the Japanese invaders.

In 1941, he was transferred back to Yan'an to be responsible for the work of the Central Party School. In 1945, he was elected as the alternate secretary of the Central Secretariat, second only to the famous "Five Major Secretarys". During the Liberation War, he worked in the Northeast for a short time and returned to the Party Central Committee in 1947 to assist Chairman Mao in commanding the People's Liberation Army against the Kuomintang army. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, when the Party Central Committee was discussing the candidate for Beijing mayor, Chairman Mao strongly recommended him to take on this important task. He did not disappoint the Chairman's expectations and governed Beijing city in an orderly manner, and various industries flourished.

When he first awarded the title in 1955, Chairman Mao ordered Peng Zhen to come to read the list of marshals in public. Many people thought that Peng Zhen might have been in the ranks of this title, but the result was shocking. He did not receive any honors for two reasons. One reason is that he mostly engaged in united front and party affairs during the revolutionary period, and did not serve in the confidential military information departments in the front line or in the rear, so he naturally had few military achievements and should not be awarded the military rank. The second is that after the founding of the People's Republic of China, he was completely transferred to the administrative department and could no longer participate in the military awarding ranks according to regulations.

In the same year, he was appointed as the first secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee and the following year he served as the secretary of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee. During the turbulent period, he was labeled as a "rightist" and was severely impacted. His position was suspended for a while. Soon after, he was sent to a place in Shaanxi for labor reform. In 1979, Comrade Hua Guofeng and Duke Deng recalled him back to Beijing, restored his reputation, and invited him to work at the National People's Congress .

1980, he was renamed the Secretary of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission. During this period, he carried out legal system construction and jointly handled old cases during the turbulent periods with the two courts to rehabilitate some aggrieved old comrades. In 1987, Peng Zhen felt deeply that he was old and was not suitable to continue to perform his duties in front-line positions, so he took the initiative to resign from the Party Central Committee. The Party Central Committee repeatedly considered it and agreed to the approval. In his later years, while engaged in literature and history research, he practiced calligraphy and calligraphy diligently to cultivate his sentiment, and lived a fulfilling and happy life. In 1997, he suddenly developed an old illness and died after ineffective rescue. He was 95 years old.
