Sui national teacher Zhizhe Tiantai Mountain Guoqing Temple Shi Zhiyan
Shi Zhiyan, whose courtesy name is De'an, his common surname is Chen, his ancestral home is Yingchuan (now Xuchang, Henan), he moved to Huarong, Jingzhou (now Huarong County, Hunan Province) in the Jin Dynasty. He was the second son of the ancestor of the Liang Sanqi General Yiyang Gong Qi. His mother, Xu, once dreamed of cigarettes lingering in her arms, and wanted to brush it away, but he heard someone say, "This is the cause and effect of the past life, and the blessings come from here. How do you brush it away?" Three times dreaming that she was eating white rat , she was quite surprised, so she went to divine. The divination master told her, "This is a sign of a white dragon." On the night when she was about to give birth, the room was bright and until the next night, the light was relieved. The whole family was very happy and killed pigs and chickens to celebrate. Unexpectedly, the fire could not be burned, the soup could not be heated, and the slaughtered was very unsuccessful. Suddenly, two monks came to lock the door, and when they saw his family, they said, "Good! Good! This is due to the child's virtue, and he will definitely become a monk in the future." After that, he disappeared and left invisible afterwards. , the family and guests were very surprised. Because Zhiying had various auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious auspicious At that time, he liked to go to the temple. Some monks were surprised by his emotions when they saw that he had extraordinary interests and interests, so they taught him to recite " Universal Door Chapter ". Unexpectedly, he would recite it once. His parents were afraid that he would become a monk, so they did not let him recite it again. Since then, he felt very sad. Later, he learned Buddhist verses again. If it weren't for the planting of virtue, how could he have come to this point?
When he was fifteen years old, he was in the turmoil at the end of Liang. He went north to 公司月 and lived in his uncle's house. He realized that He grew more and more handsome and kind, so he searched for a famous teacher, wanting to get out of the world. At the age of eighteen, he really joined the monk Faxue, a monk from Guoyuan Temple in Xiangzhou, and became a monk. Faxu granted the ten precepts and Taoist rituals. Later, he went north to visit Lawyer Huikuang and received many guidance from Lawyer Huikuang. Later, he lived in Daxian Mountain to read the Lotus Sutra, "Infinite Meaning" and "Samuhara View". In less than 20 years, he had already read the three scriptures well. He went to Dasu Mountain in Guangzhou to visit Zen Master Huisi to learn the view of the mind from him. Huisi He had received the Tao from Master Ju, and Master Ju had received the master Ju. The three Zen masters did not know that Zhiyan would become a master of Buddhism in the future.
Huisi often sighed, "In the past, I listened to the Lotus Sutra together in Lingshan, and now I am reunited." He showed Samantabhadra's temple and told him the four happiness practices. Zhiyan practiced the "Lotus Samadhi" on this mountain for only three nights. When he read and recited the sentence "Medical King's Classic" "Asthetic Practice, Is True Diligence" in "The Practice of Medicine", he suddenly became enlightened and saw that his master's intention was on the Seven Treasures Pure Land of Lingshan Mountain and listened to the Buddha's teachings. Later, Huisi said to him, "If you are not you, you will not be able to sense, you will not be able to confirm it, you will not be able to do it. If you are not you, you will not be able to confirm it. If you are not you, you will not be able to do it. If you are not you, you will not be able to confirm it. The meditation you entered was the convenience before the Lotus Samadhi. "Zhi Yan later went to Baisha Mountain in Xizhou and entered the meditation as before. If there were any problems in the sutra, he immediately saw his teacher Huisi coming to explain it to him.
Later, Huisi often asked Zhiyan to speak on his behalf, and those who listened to his explanation were very impressed by his wisdom and eloquence. In the process of explaining the sutras and treatises, except for not being very proficient in the three concentrations and three views, and needed to ask Huisi for advice, the rest of Huisi were allowed to explain and exert. Once, Huisi held the wishful thinking in his hand and listened to Zhiyan's explanation in his seat. He said to the apprentices, "This Zhiyan has indeed achieved great achievements in moral principles, and what is regrettable is that his concentration is insufficient." Later, Zhiyan made up his mind to learn Zen from his master, and made great progress, and was well-known. After he finished his studies, he wanted to bid farewell to his master and go to another place, Huisi said to him, "You have great opportunities with the State of Chen, and you will definitely benefit when you get there."
After Huisi arrived in Nanyue, Zhiyan went to Jinling . He and more than 30 people including Faxi promoted Zen at Waguan Temple .Pushe Xu Ling , Shangshu Mao Xi , etc. are all famous scholars and officials who are both highly respectful of Zhiyan. They often listen to Zhiyan's lectures and learn Zen from him. Inspired by Hui Sihongdao, some famous monks and masters in Jiangnan at that time, such as Zhibian from Changqian Temple, were admitted to Zongxi; monk Huang from Tiangong Temple invited him to live in a Buddhist cave. Wisdom moves randomly and becomes enlightened immediately. 海活日本 , and even Master Sude Daren of the Liang Dynasty, all respected Zhiying, either changing the ward or leading his disciples to ask Zhiying for the Tao and practice Zen. At that time, there was a monk named Huirong who lived in Zhuangyan Temple. He was very influential in the Wuyue area. He was eloquent and became a righteous tiger in the world. He heard that Zhiyan was speaking in that area, so he went to listen to the lecture and asked questions at the meeting. After several discussions, the issues discussed were indeed quite profound. Huirong was very proud of her, raised her eyebrows and sang a fan, and unexpectedly, the fan landed on the ground. Zhiying took the opportunity to say to Huirong, "The power of meditation cannot be asked." At that time, the monk Fasui patted Huirong's shoulder and said, "The dragon of righteousness has become a deer now. Since the fan has landed, what should I use to cover my shame?" Huirong replied, "Although I lost my composure this time because I underestimated the enemy, I still should not underestimate it." Zhiying talked about " Great Wisdom Theory " for eight weeks in a row during that period, and scholars from all directions came to listen. Later, he expounded Zen to clear his mind.
日本語 often reveals the desire for the mountains and forests in daily conversations. So I dreamed of a mountain with mountains and mountains, clouds and mist, and the vast sea was boundless. Another monk shook his hand and reached the foot of the mountain, holding Zhiyi's arm and leading him up the mountain. Zhiyan told his disciples what he dreamed of, and they all said, "This is the Tiantai Mountain in Kuaiji. Many sages lived in the past, including monks Guang, Daoyou, Falan, Tanmi, and even many famous monks and masters of the Jin and Song dynasties. They all lived here." Therefore, he led more than 20 people including Huibian and came south to Tiantai Mountain. Before this, the monk Dingguang of Qingzhou lived in this mountain. He lived for more than 40 years, and was a god of concentration and wisdom.
zhiyan had not arrived in Tiantai two years before Master Dingguang once told the mountain people: "In the future, great charity will come here. Everyone should plant beans and make sauce, make pills into mats, build houses, and welcome the arrival of the sage." At that time, Chen Chao Shixing King came out of town Dongting , and all the ministers and ministers of the court went to see him off. King Shixing didn't walk far away and drove back to talk to Zhiyan. Zhiyan's incisive discussion made him amazed and could not help but be respectful to Zhiyan, and said with sigh: "I dreamed of meeting a robber last night, but I unexpectedly met a spiritual master today. His words were deeply engraved, and we couldn't see them." Later, Zhiyan dispersed his disciples and said to them: "I have heard that hidden shooting is a string. Why do you say so? If ignorance is darkness, lips and tongue are bows, thoughts are like strings, and sounds are like arrows, and arrows are randomly shot in the darkness. I don’t know where to shoot. Another example is a mirror, and the square and circle follow the image. At the beginning, there were only more than forty people in Waguan Temple, and half of them learned the Tao: Now there are more than 200 people in Waguan Temple meditation, and only ten people obtain the Tao. Why is the more people coming to Waguan Temple to study Buddhism, but fewer people obtain the Tao? Please think deeply about the principles here. Now I am going to follow the original plan and practice the Tao. Please follow your own peace. "After speaking, you go to Tiantai. After arriving at the rooftop, he met Master Dingguang. Master Dingguang said to Zhiyan, "Great Master, have you ever remembered that I waved to you on the mountain before?" Zhiyan was very surprised when he heard this, and only then did he realize that what he dreamed of before was originally entrusted by Dingguang. It was September of the seventh year of Chen Taijian (575 AD). Then he heard bells and drums fill the valley, and everyone felt strange. Dingguang said, "This bell is to gather those who are destined to be. You can live here."
Zhiyan chose a place, which was north of Dingguang and south of Folong Mountain, which was the source of Luoxi . The earth was flat and the spring was clear, and Zhiyan stopped here. Soon, I met three people wearing red clothes and black hats, holding Wenshu in their hands and said to Zhiyan, "You can practice the Dharma here." So Zhiyan built a temple and planted trees in that place. In a few years, it had begun to take shape.Dingguang said to Zhiyan again: "Now you can stay as you wish. When the country is peaceful and the world is unified, when there are noble people to build a temple for you, the temple will be full of mountains." At that time, people did not quite understand what Dingguang said. Later, Zhiying practiced the Toutuo Shrine alone on the top of the temple's north China peak. Suddenly, the wind was blowing, the thunder roared, and the monsters were roaring in different shapes, and they all spit out fire and screamed strangely. It was extremely terrifying and scary and difficult to describe. Zhiyan was unmoved by it and continued to practice Zen. After a while, these phenomena disappeared one by one. Suddenly, physical and mental distress appeared again, as if they were burned by fire. I saw my old parents resting their heads on their knees and wailing bitterly. Zhiyan knew that these were all illusions, so he continued to practice and remained motionless. It didn't take long before these phenomena disappeared. Later, a monk from the Western Regions suddenly appeared and said to Zhiyan: "It is only the only way to defeat the enemy and overcome grievances under various circumstances." There are many original texts, but they are not included. By the time of Emperor Xuan of Chen, an edict was issued: "Zen Master Zhiyi is a master of Buddhism, and was praised by everyone at that time. The monks and laymen were all well-educated, which is the reputation of the country. It is good to cut the taxes of the first county Fengxian to use them as daily expenses for the temple, and select two residents to be servile in the temple."
Tiantai Mountain County is called Anle, and the county magistrate is Yuan Zixiong of Chen County, who believes in Buddhism. Every summer, Zhiyi often talks about " Vimalakirti Sutra ", and he goes to listen. Once, I suddenly saw the three treasure steps falling from the sky. Dozens of Indian monks took the steps down, entered the hall to worship, held the incense burner in his hands, and circled around it for three turns. It took a long time to disappear. Yuan Zixiong and his followers all saw it with their own eyes, and everyone was amazed and sighed as rare.
The King of Yongyang Bozhi, when he went out to comfort Wuxing , he brought his family into the mountain to ask for justice and established the forty-nine nights of "Fang and Meaning Repentance Method". Wang Bozhi takes care of his work during the day and practices Zen at night. …
Once, the emperor of the Chen Dynasty wanted to worship Buddha, so he asked the ministers in the court: "Which is the most extraordinary person today?" Chen Xuan replied: "The Zen Master Waguan Temple has the deepest Taoist practice and the purest virtues, and is the most influential master of the Zen sect today. When he was in the capital in the past, he was respected by all the wise men. Now he is on the top of Tiantai, and the Dharma is in the east. I hope Your Majesty will recall him to the capital to benefit the Taoist customs." The Lord Chen then issued an order to summon Zhiyan. Zhiyan politely declined on the grounds that he was currently plagued by legal affairs and was difficult to leave. Later, because King Bozhi of Yongyang repeatedly requested, he issued an order to summon him, sent seven envoys and brought the emperor's handwriting. Because Zhiyan believed that the worldly emperor was the entrusted by Buddhism, he was summoned to the capital and lived in Lingyao Temple. He was often welcomed into the East Hall of Taiji Temple to preach Buddhism. The emperor issued another edict, ordering the boy from the sheep carriage to lead the way, and the master's letter and the servant welcomed him to the steps on both sides, and respected him like the former national teacher, the Tuojieli.
Mr. Chen held a lecture for him. All the Chinese civil and military officials went to listen to his teachings, eager to hear the Dharma that they had never heard of before and pursue the Buddhist path. Therefore, Lord Chen immediately issued an order to establish Zen people at Lingyao Temple. Not long after, many apprentices gathered. Lord Chen also frequently sent orders to invite him to the Taiji Palace to preach the "Renwang Sutra", and Lord Chen personally visited the Dharma Chair. The monk Zhenghui Hing, monk Huikuang and many famous monks and masters in the capital have all set up great difficulties in the Dharma table. Zhicheng followed the docking and questioned questions and explained the Dharma. ...
Later, Zhiying lived in Guangyao Temple, , samadhi, , and both Zen and wisdom were promoted. Under the influence and promotion of Zhiyi, Buddhism developed greatly during that period, and more and more people studied Buddhism. Emperor Chen Dynasty was worried that someone would take the opportunity to hang out, so he issued an order to inspect monks and nuns. The courtiers reported, "Anyone who fails to practice the scriptures is not suitable for practicing Taoism." Zhiyan then wrote, "Takeda (i.e. Devadatta) can recite the scriptures carried by 60,000 elephants, but he still cannot help but fall into hell. Zhou Li Pantuoga can only recite one line of verses, but attain the Arhat fruit. Buddhism lies in practicing sincerely, but not in reciting the scriptures!" After seeing Zhiyan's memorial, Chen praised his statement and ordered the search for monks and nuns to stop. It is true that ten thousand people became monks because of a wise advice. Later, Zhiyan Jue Lingyao Temple was too narrow and wanted to find another more pure place. Suddenly, he dreamed of a person who reported his surname and said, "My name is Guanda, please ask the great master to stop at Sanqiao." Zhiyan said, "Guanda Liangwu's Dharma name, isn't Sanqiao the House Guang's house?" So he moved to Guang's house. In April of that year, Lord Chen went to the temple to worship Buddha and visited Zhiying, and gave a large amount of money and Zhiying. He also held a lecture on the "Neiwang Sutra". Lord Chen worshiped diligently among the crowd, and the queen, crown prince and others also paid tribute frequently. ...
In the late Chen Dynasty, the situation was turbulent and the war was in chaos. Not long after, the Chen Dynasty fell. Zhiyan went to Jing (Hubei) and Hunan (Hunan) to travel and spread the Dharma. When passing by Yicheng, he dreamed that an old monk said to him, "The auspicious image of the guardianship of Tao Kan in the past is now Lushan , please go there to continue to protect it." So he went to Mount Lu according to the words of the old monk and saw the image, as it was said in a dream, proving that the words of the old monk are true. Not long after, wars broke out in the area of Jiujiang , and many temples were burned down. Only the temples in Lushan were intact, which was due to the merit of protecting the statue.
Uncle Wen of Sui During the Kaihuang period, Yang Guang was in Yangzhou for Jinwang . He admired the wisdom and virtue of his virtues very much. He wanted to take precepts from him and became his teacher, so he frequently sent letters to send envoys to courtesy. Zhiyan initially said that he was not virtuous and incompetent, and then asked Yang Guang to invite other famous monks and masters, and finally recommended his classmates. After three polite words, he could not refuse, so he asked to make four wishes before agreeing to go. His fourth wish says: "First, although I am a monk who loves Zen in my life, I have no profound attainments in Zen: In addition, I am old and can only stay at the rope bed to study by myself. The various praises from the outside world for my monks are mostly exaggerated. Therefore, please do not follow the Zen method; second, I am born in the border area, and have been separated from chaos and have not received good education. Since I became a monk, I have not participated in worldly affairs for a long time. My simple personality is contrary to the world. I hope not to seek social engagements in the world. Third, I will teach the lamp to repay the Buddha's kindness. I will be obliged to do so. But I will teach the precepts and pass on the lamp. It is of great importance. If the requirements are too strict, it will be difficult to be widely accepted. If the requirements are too loose, it will be easily ridiculed by the outside world. It is better to teach the precepts and be destined to be the Dharma. I am willing to make it a Dharma without being tempted; Fourth, for more than ten years, I have been practicing and wandering in the forests and mountains and lakes, so that I can become a person. Now that the country is unified, Buddhism is prosperous, and I will be blessed with this emperor's grace. But once I have the idea of returning to the mountains and forests in the future, please let the old monk return to the forests at any time. If I can agree to these four wishes, I will dare to go. "Yang Guang eagerly sought to seek pure precepts, so he quickly agreed to the four conditions of Zhiying. And he also wrote a "Please give a warning text". ...
Zhiyan then went to Yangdu to teach Yang Guang the Bodhisattva precepts and said, "The king has made the purpose of saving the world and helping the world. It is true. Now, the king has taken the Dharma name "General Holding" to support the name and practice." The King of Jin bowed and accepted the teachings and said, "The master has profound Taoism and wisdom, and is respectfully called "Smart Master". After each other, Zhiyan was called "Master of Wise". Later, Zhiyan wanted to return to the mountains and forests, but King Yang Guang of Jin repeatedly tried to stay. Zhiyan said, "We have a clear agreement first, how can we break the agreement!" Then he brushed his clothes and stood up. The King of Jin did not dare to force him to stay, so he put his hands together to send him outside the city gate. Zhiyan turned around and said to Yang Guang, "The responsibility for governing the country is of great importance, which will inevitably affect the affairs of Taoism. I hope you can think of promoting Buddhism in the future." The King of Jin agreed and sent Zhiyan away with tears before returning to the royal palace. After Zhiyan left Yangdu, he took a boat from Yangtze River to Mount Lu, and then made disciples to spread the Dharma. Monks from the southern area came to Lushan to ask him for advice and study, and for a while, many apprentices gathered.
In the 13th year of Kaihuang in the Sui Dynasty (593 AD), Zhiyan returned to his hometown. People from both monks and lay people from all walks of life came to visit and pay respects. For a time, thousands of people received precepts from him and listened to him preaching. He then built a temple in Yuquan Mountain, Dangyang County. The emperor of the dynasty personally gave the temple plaque and named it "Yiyin Temple". In the past, this area was full of barren mountains and grass, and snakes and scorpions were rampant. Since the founding of the temple, it has changed the desolate scene in the past and the people have praised it. That spring, it was early in the morning that I had never met for a hundred years. The local people said that they had built temples, which touched the mountain gods, so they suffered this disaster. Zhiyan led his disciples to the source of the spring to recite scriptures and pray for rain. Soon he felt the clouds rise and the wind surging, and the heavy rain was pouring, and the rumors were self-defeating. The local general manager, Duke Wang Ji, went to the mountain temple to thank Zhiyan for his thanks. Along the way, he was trembling and restless, and his sweaty shirt was wet. After coming out of the mountain, he said, "My Wang Ji has been through the battlefield many times and is not afraid of danger. He has never been as panic as he is today."...
zhiyan lived in Yuquan for two years. In the fifteenth year of Kaihuang (595 AD), Jin Wang Yang Guang sent a letter to urge Zhiyan to return to Yangdu. Zhiyan accepted Yang Guang's invitation to go to Jinling to preach the scriptures and spread the Dharma, and wrote the "Vimalakirti Sutra". At that time, Liu Guyan from Hedong, Xu Yi and others were all talented people. They helped Zhiying confirm the meaning of the text, and the King of Jin personally accepted it. The King of Jin had a beloved concubine, Xiao, who was suffering from a serious illness and had no effect in every way. The King of Jin ordered Liu Guyan and others to write a letter to Zhiying, asking him to come and bless Concubine Xiao. Zhiyi then led everyone to build a seven-day altar for Concubine Xiao and held the Golden Light Repentance. On the evening of the sixth day, a strange bird suddenly flew into the altar, flew in a vegetarian way, and was resurrected from death. When he heard the sound of a pig crowing, everyone felt very surprised to see these phenomena. Zhiying said: "From these signs, Concubine Xiao's illness should be fine and will be cured soon." The bird's death and resurrection meant that the coffin was covered again; but he could not see the pig's shape but heard the sound of the pig, which meant that the feast was a blessing. The next day, Concubine Xiao's condition improved and she recovered soon. When the King of Jin entered the morning court, he was very happy to learn that Concubine Xiao recovered from illness and congratulated her grandly.
Later, Zhiying returned to Tiantai Mountain and once repented several times. He swore in front of the Buddha: "If I have any use for the spread of the Three Jewels, I would like to work hard for this year of my lifetime: If it is not beneficial to the Three Jewels, I would like to enter the extinction quickly." Not long after, he said to his disciples, "I will die here, so I often miss coming back. Recently, I have a premonition that the deadline is coming, after I enter the extinction, Please bury me on a mountain peak in the southwest, plant pine trees around it, and build a white pagoda to make those who see it feel like they are determined. "He also said, "Although merchants do business everywhere, they can't forget to send money to their families; the doctors have treated many patients, but they have to go back in the end. Although the person has left, they can't forget to leave prescriptions for future generations. Although I am not sensitive, can I benefit my future generations without any benefit to my future generations?" So he cheered up and dictated the "Theory of Contemplation of the Heart" to the public and wrote it casually, without any need for deliberate refining. He also asked the scholar Zhiyue to go to Shicheng Temple to sweep the flowers and said, "I will die before that Buddha. Please put the bed against the east wall and face the west." He called Amitabha Buddha and Prajna Guanyin the holy names. It also made people burn more incense, and then he asked for a bowl and prop and divided it into two parts, one for Maitreya and the other for karma . Then he faced the West and chanted the names of Amitabha Buddha and Guanyin. A servant wanted to persuade him to take medicine, but he said, "Can medicine cure diseases and prolong life? The disease does not match the body, so how can medicine cure diseases! The year does not match the heart, so how can medicine prolong life!"... A servant advised him to go to the vegetarian restaurant, but he said, "Not only can I vegetarian food be done by walking on the shadow, but I can do it without any precepts and fate. I regard the body of life as a skin, and treat death as if I return home. Things in the world are originally unchanged, so why sigh: "There was then presented the "Vimalakirti Sutra" made before, as well as rhinoceros horns, lotus incense burners, etc., and wrote seven suicide notes to say goodbye to the King of Jin. His writing was comprehensive and full of literary talent, and he asked him to use the great Dharma. At the end, he wrote a commentary on his hand, "The incense burner of Ruyi was originally the king. Now he is the restored master. I hope to make the incense of virtue forever and protect the wishful thinking forever." He also asked to sing the title of the Lotus Sutra, and he praised and said, "The parents of Dharma are born from wisdom. The original traces are grand and subtle and difficult to measure. They are now out of the way." After listening to " Amitabha Sutra ", he praised and said, " Forty-eight Vows , wishing to be solemnly adorn the Pure Land, the Huachi Pond, and the Treasure Tree are easy to go to without anyone else!" and so on. He even rinsed his mouth with fragrant soup and said that the ten principles, four non-births, , ten Dharma realms, , three views, four teachings, four immeasurable minds, six perfection, etc. A disciple asked about the fruit he had attained, and he replied, "You who are lazy to plant good roots should ask about the merits and fruits of others. This is like a blind man asking about the color of milk and a lame man asking for directions. If I do not lead the people to practice, I will definitely be able to purify the six senses. Because I lead the people to practice, I will only achieve the fifth level of inner level. Now, all my former teachers and friends have come to greet me with Guanyin and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva . Everyone, the Palathi Mucha (i.e., the precepts) is your backbone, and the four kinds of samadhi (i.e., the Samadhi of Constant Sit, the Samadhi of Constant Sit, the Samadhi of Constant Sit, the Samadhi of Constant Sit, the Samadhi of Constant Sit, the Samadhi of Half-Practice, the Samadhi of Neither Sit, the Samadhi of Neither Sit) are your guide."And he said to Vina: "When a person is dying, he can increase his order by hearing the sound of bells and chimes. The sound of bells and chimes should be long and long until his energy is gone. Do not wait until his body cools down before the sound of chimes. After I die, do not cry or wear mourning clothes, etc. You will be silent, and I will leave." After that, sat cross-legged in , as if he entered Samadhi, and died in front of the large stone statue of Tiantai Mountain. His lifetime was 67 years old, that is, November 24, the 17th year of Kaihuang in the Sui Dynasty (597 AD). After his destruction, his disciples took care of his funeral according to his will.
... Zhiyan spread the Dharma throughout his life and transformed into the country. He built 35 large temples, saved more than 4,000 monks, wrote rich writings, wrote fifteen collections of all sutras, and more than 100,000 golden sandals. He received countless Bodhisattva precepts from him, and thirty-two disciples from him, and thousands of disciples from him practiced Zen, covering all the mountains and rivers. Shaman Initiation served him for many years, sorting out his words and deeds and conduct for more than 20 papers, and many of his works were also sorted out by initiation. (The existing works marked as Zhiyan mainly include the "Three Major Sections of Tiantai" (i.e. "The Mysterious Meaning of Lotus Sutra", "The Verses of Lotus Sutra", "Mahasattvas" and "The Mysterious Meaning of Guanyin", "The Commentary of Guanyin" and "The Commentary of Guanyin" etc.)
