Huineng , A famous monk during the Tang Dynasty , and a ancestor of Zen Buddhism. Huineng obtained the teaching of the fifth ancestor Hongren , inherited the Dongshan Dharma lineage and established the Southern School, and promoted the sudden teaching method of "directly pointing to the hearts of the people, seeing the nature and becoming a Buddha", and was respected by Buddhism as Huineng.
One day, Fifth Patriarch Hongren summoned his disciples to write a verse. Whoever could understand the Dharma would pass it on to him. Hongren’s best disciple Shenxiu wrote a song " formless verse ": The body is a Bodhi tree, and the heart is like a mirror platform. Wipe it frequently and do not cause dust. When Hongren saw this verse, he said that he had not yet realized it and asked him to write it again. Shen Xiu thought hard for several days but could not get it. Huineng was illiterate, so he asked someone to read the works of Shenxiu for him, and then wrote " Bodhi Verse ", and asked someone to write it for him to write it on the wall. Today I want to share with you the third poem:
Bodhi Verse (third)
Tang Dynasty Huineng
Bodhi original has no tree, and the mirror is not a platform.
There is nothing at all, where can dust be caused!

Originally, the four elements are empty, where can we get dust? When Hongren saw this verse, he praised it endlessly, saying that he had suddenly realized the Buddha nature and realized the true meaning of Buddhism.
