Thousand Buddha Rock. Big Buddha Pavilion , east of the Relic Tower and behind Wuliang Hall, there is Thousand Buddha Rock, known as "Yungang, Jiangnan", and is the only Southern Dynasty grotto in China. According to the "Qixia Temple Stele", after the death of the Ming monk Shao of the Southern Dynasty, his son Zhongzhang and the monk Dharma Du first engraved the Buddha of Amitabha, Guanyin and Shizhi on both walls of the West Peak. According to legend, after the Buddha statue was carved, it shone brightly on the top of the Buddha niche. Therefore, the nobles and officials of Qi and Liang were moved by the news, and each carved Buddha statues on the stone walls based on the height and depth of the mountain rocks. The statues are exquisite and simple, and can be compared with Datong and Longmen. Their value lies in the preservation of the original charm of the Buddha statues of the Southern Dynasty, which is particularly rare in Jiangnan. There is a "Buddha" in Thousand Buddha Rock, which is unique, namely "Shi Gong Buddha " on the left side of the Three Holy Temple. His image is a statue of a craftsman who excavated a Buddha statue, holding a hammer in one hand and a chisel in the other. Legend has it that when the last Buddha was dug to the end, it was impossible to complete it. The hammer could not be chiseled when it was light, and the stone would collapse when it was heavy. There was no way for the stonemason to jump into the Buddha's niche and become this Buddha. Of course, this was impossible, but later generations wanted to express their nostalgia for the craftsmen.
