Hello everyone! The Sixth Patriarch As one of the important figures in the history of Zen Buddhism, Huineng left many famous quotes. He is known as the Buddha of China, as well as the Laozi and Confucius . He is known as the three great sages of the East. Let’s talk about the classic sentences that Master Huineng said.
The first sentence, "Although people have differentiation between north and south, there is no distinction between north and south. Everyone can learn Buddhism and become Buddhas." This is what he said when he first met the Fifth Patriarch Hongren. At that time, he was not well-educated because he was a savage from the south and was illiterate and was not popular.
He spoke bluntly and knocked on the heart of the Fifth Ancestor. This sentence is very philosophical. From a natural perspective, everyone is equal and has no discriminatory mind. This is the teaching of the Buddha.
The second sentence, "There is no tree in Bodhi, and the mirror is not a platform. There is nothing in it, so where can dust be caused?" This is a shocking sentence. At that time, the Fifth Patriarch was choosing a successor and asked each person to write a verse and hand it over to him.
Because Huineng could not read, he used the "body is a Bodhi tree, and his heart is like a mirror platform. Wipe it frequently and do not cause dust" as the foundation and wrote his own verse. This sentence has reached the final state and achieved emptiness.
The third sentence, "Who did you expect your own nature to be pure; how did you expect your own nature to be unborn or destroyed; how did you expect your own nature to be fully possessed; how did you expect your own nature to be able to produce all dharmas?" This verse was written in the third day of the heaven.
At that time, the fifth ancestor Hongren explained " Diamond Sutra " to Huineng under the oil lamp. When he talked about "the mind should be born without dwelling on anything", Huineng immediately realized and said this passage. The passage of
expresses the nature of the ontology very well. Through this verse, the Fifth Patriarch understood that Huineng had already realized his mind and nature, so he decided that he was the Sixth Patriarch of Zen.
The fourth sentence, "When you are confused, you are saved, and when you are enlightened, you are saved." This sentence was said by Huineng when he crossed the river south after getting his robe. At that time, the Fifth Patriarch and him were on the boat.
The Fifth Patriarch trusted Huineng to protect the robe and mantle of Master Bodhidharma . He must carry forward the Zen method and then personally shake the slurry and cross the river.
Huineng said, "When I was lost, my master saved me. Now that I am enlightened, I can save myself." In the eyes of the Fifth Patriarch, there is no problem of seniority now, but the Fifth Patriarch of Zen crosses the Sixth Patriarch and sits on an equal footing.
The fifth sentence: People in the world recite Prajna all day long, but do not recognize Prajna of their own nature, just like saying that they cannot eat enough. If you only talk about emptiness, you will never be able to see your nature without any kalpa, and it will never be beneficial.
This passage means that many people copy scriptures and recite Buddha's name every day, read the scriptures carefully, and even memorize them like a stream, but they do not gain wisdom from the inside, just like they are very hungry, they just talk about various delicacies in their mouths, and their stomachs cannot be full.
is talking about emptiness in his mouth. No matter how long it takes, he will not be able to recognize his own nature. In the end, it will not help. The master told us not only to learn the classics, but also to practice them in practice.
The sixth sentence: Ordinary people are Buddhas, and troubles are Bodhi. The shorter the text, the more important the content. The master said that a lost mortal is a Buddha. Although he has not been enlightened, his Buddha nature has always been inside and cannot be underestimated by anyone. He may awaken at any time.
The temporary difficulties and challenges make us uncomfortable, but this is exactly when we open our wisdom, and this is how growth happens. The master lets us look at the problem optimistically.
The seventh sentence, the wind has not moved, the banner has not moved, and the benevolent heart is moved. This sentence is said at the Faxing Temple in Guangzhou. At that time, Master Huineng was not yet slandered. Master Yin Zong organized his disciples to preach the "Maha Nirvana Sutra". A gust of wind blew, and the banner began to flutter. Master Yin Zong said Zen to ask his disciples, is it the wind or the banner moving?
Master Huineng replied, "The kind of heart is moved." As soon as these words came out, the words shocked everyone. Master Huineng took this opportunity to reveal his identity as the Sixth Patriarch, ascended the high school and began to speak on the path of benefiting sentient beings.
The eighth sentence: Looking for Bodhi from the world is like seeking the horn of a rabbit. The master warned the disciples that if they escape from life and practice, they would never be able to seek horns on a rabbit. The master may say that true practice is in the world, and learning is meaningful.
The ninth sentence, why bother keeping the precepts when you are calm? Why do you need to practice Zen when practicing straightforwardness? If kindness means filial piety to parents, and if righteousness means sympathy for each other, the superiors and subordinates will be sympathetic. If you let go, you will be harmonious with your superiors and inferiors; if you are patient, you will be free from evil. If you can drill wood to get fire, the mud will surely produce red lotus. A bitter medicine is good, and a bitter word must be honest.
Correcting mistakes will bring wisdom, and protecting one's heart is not a virtuous person. Daily use is always beneficial, and achieving enlightenment is not about giving money. Bodhi only seeks from the heart, so why bother seeking mystery from the outside? I heard that according to this practice, the West is only in the present.
The tenth sentence: The Lotus Sutra turns when you are confused, and the Lotus Sutra turns when you are enlightened. If we are lost, we will be confused by the classics. The so-called practice of being attached to appearances, only guarding the hand pointing to the moon, and not knowing the real moon. If we wake up, all the Lotus Sutra will be used by us and we will not be attached to it.
Because the great way is unspeakable, the scriptures are the form of words, and when written, they are separated from the true nature, which is also the only available way of expression. Only when we understand it can we learn and apply it, knowing that they are sometimes suitable and sometimes not.
The eleventh sentence, one should not practice goodness, do not commit evil, be silent and stop seeing and hearing, and be indifferent to the mind. This sentence is what Master Huineng left to his disciples before his death, so that his disciples will not go astray if they practice with this.
It explains the characteristics of the essence well, does not attach to merit, does not commit evil, does not greed, or is not attached to it. I bowed to Master Huineng and thanked him for leaving us with such precious spiritual wealth.
Thank you for watching! See you next time ~ Thank you ~
