Bodhidharma faced the wall for nine years. He created the first Chinese Buddhist Zen Buddhism. After passing the robe and bowl to the second ancestor Huike , he left Shaolin Temple and traveled around, and was calm and comfortable. Later, I arrived at Yumen (now Longmen in Luoyang) and lived in Qiansheng Temple. Eastern Wei Tianping sat down and died in three years. His body (corpse) was buried in the coffin according to the etiquette of the Han people. Later, the burial of Xionger Mountain was moved and a pagoda was built in Dinglin Temple in Shaanxi County to commemorate it.

East Wei envoy Song YunEnvoy Western Regions , but has not returned for a long time and knows nothing about the death of Bodhidharma. When he completed his mission and returned to the Pamir Mountains, he met the familiar Master Bodhidharma, carrying an tin staff, holding a shoe in his hand, and heading west barefoot. When the two met, Song Yun hurriedly dismounted and bowed and said, "Master, where are you going?" Bodhidharma replied, "I'll go to the west." Then he said, "You go back to the capital, don't say you have seen me, otherwise you will be in a disaster." Song Yun thought Bodhidharma was joking with him, so he didn't mind, so he went his separate ways after the greetings.

Song Yun returned to the capital. After a short rest, he submitted an order to the emperor and reported the situation of the twelve countries including Tonghe Dayuezhi and Kucha over the past six years. He was praised by Emperor Xiaojing and allowed him to return home to rest for three months without court time. After the official report, Song Yun was about to go down to the palace when he suddenly remembered what happened to the ancestor Bodhidharma when he was passing by the Pamir Mountains. He felt that it was okay to not tell others about this matter, but he could not hide it from the emperor, otherwise he would be disloyal to the king. As soon as he thought of this, he told all the things that he met Bodhidharma. Unexpectedly, before he finished speaking, Emperor Xiaojing Yuan Shanjian got angry and scolded Song Yun angrily: "It is well known that Bodhidharma died at Yumen, buried in Xionger Mountain, and built a pagoda Dinglin Temple . Why do you say that when you met him in the Paoling Mountains, how could the dead be resurrected? This is clearly deceiving the king and deceiving me, which is outrageous!"

immediately sent an order to launch Song Yun to behead for public display. The palace guards tied up Song Yun in a big way without saying anything. The civil and military officials of the court saw the sudden change in the storm and were shocked and reported to plead for love. In the end, Emperor Xiaojing saved Song Yun from his death penalty and asked the Imperial Guards to take him to the Southern Superintendent. Only then did Song Yun realize that Bodhidharma's ancestor had been dead for three years, but he clearly met him in the Pamir Mountains half a year ago. Suddenly, he remembered what Bodhidharma said when he left, and was very confused. Song Yun suffered a wrongful injustice, and the emperor still had anger and retreated from the court unhappy. Another year later, Kandun, the envoy of Kucha Kingdom in the Western Regions, came to pay tribute. After offering treasures, he must meet his friend Song Yun. Emperor Xiaojing had no choice but to restore Song Yunguan to his post and meet Kan Dun.

A few days later, Kandun returned to China, and Emperor Xiaojing sat in court to try the case of Song Yun's deceiving the emperor. Song Yun came to the palace and was trembling, his soul was not possessed, his eyes were whirling, and he was moving step by step. Emperor Xiaojing asked, "If you encounter Bodhidharma in the Pamir Mountains, you must report it according to the truth, and there must be no lies!" Song Yun bowed and said, "The emperor said: When Bodhidharma was seen in the Pamir Mountains, the ancestor was barefoot; he held his tin stick with one hand and carried his shoes with the other; he said back to the west and did not let me say anything; if he said it out, disasters will be retribution; I dare not deceive the king, so I will report it by the way; now, according to the truth, every sentence is true; you are wise and hope that right and wrong will be clear." After hearing this, Emperor Xiaojing was half-believing and half-doubted, and it was hard to tell the truth and false, and at a loss. The ministers were also talking about it. Some said, "Everyone knows that Bodhidharma has passed away. How can he die and return the soul of Yang? Song Yun clearly deceives the emperor and is unwilling tolerate it according to law." Some said, "Bodhidharma returns to the West and Song Yun, and he dares to deceive the heavens again in prison. If it is difficult to judge the truth or falsehood, the right and wrong statement will be said to be true or false."

Emperor Xiaojing adopted the latter suggestion, so he sent someone to dig up Bodhidharma's tomb, pry open the lid of the coffin and see. Sure enough, there was no Bodhidharma's body (corpse) in the coffin, and only one shoe was left. After the imperial envoy reported to the Emperor, Emperor Xiaojing Yuan Shan was shocked and issued a pardon order, which made Song Yun's unjust injustice clear. There is also a "Bodhidharma's Monument to Return to the West" in the Shaolin Temple's Monument, with a poem engraved on it: "Bodhidharma entered the Tianping Year of the Destruction of Tianping, and the pagodas and temples in Xionger Mountains were all there; if it weren't for the Song Yunpanling Mountains, who knew that he would only return to the West.

Bodhidharma travels west with a shoe, and there are three meanings: one is one shoe on the body and one shoe is left in the tomb, so that people can believe that the truth is true, and it also means to leave Zen Buddhism on this; the other is traveling west to guide sentient beings to seek rebirth in the Western Paradise, or to be reborn in the Pure Land of Buddha. Third, Buddhism calls human death Nirvana, which is the final overcoming of troubles, desires, and sufferings of life and death. It is translated as "death", "death", "death", "nonstan", "blessing", "blessing", "liberation", etc. Hinayana Buddhism divides Nirvana into two types, namely Nirvana with remainder and Nirvana without remainder. Nirvana with remainder means that sentient beings have been eliminated, all desires have not yet been lost, and their spirit has entered the state of Nirvana, but there is still a physical body, and the body has not yet died; Nirvana without remainder means that the spirit and body of sentient beings have died, that is, they have even given up their physical body, attain great transcendence, and completely break out of the world of life and death. Mahayana Buddhism (Zen) partially accepts the sayings of Nirvana with Remaining and Nirvana without Remaining.

idiom only walking back to the west: refers to the matter of Bodhidharma returning to the west with his hands and walking back to the west. Later, it is a metaphor for a perfect life, a perfect result, a dead end, or a life like a dream, and a emptied journey.
