The cause and condition of enlightenment of the Zen Master Huaihai in Baizhang Mountain

　　The Zen Master Huaihai in Baizhang Mountain in Hongzhou is the Dharma heir of Zen Master Mazu Daoyi, a native of Changle, Fuzhou (now southeast of Fuzhou), and his common surname is Wang. When he was young, he became a monk from Xishan Huizhao and later went to Hengshan Lawyer to receive full precepts. When I heard that Zen Master Mazu Daoyi was preaching the Dharma in Jiangxi, I went to study with the Xitang Zhizang and Nanquan Puyuan at that time, and were the three major disciples under the seat of Mazu .

One day, Zen Master Huaihai accompanied Mazu to walk in the wild. At this time, a group of wild ducks happened to fly by nearby. Mazu asked, "What is it?"

　　Zen Master Huaihai said, "Wild duck."

　　Mazu asked, "Where are you going?"

　　Zen Master Huaihai said, "Flying over."

　　Mazu suddenly turned around and twisted Zen Master Huaihai hard. Zen Master Huaihai screamed in pain.

　　Mazu said, "I will fly over again!"

　　Zen Master Huaihai suddenly realized after his words.

Afterwards, Zen Master Huaihai returned to the waiter's dormitory and cried sadly.

　　Seeing him like this, the Tongliao asked, "Are you all your parents?"

　　Zen Master Huaihai said, "No."

　　Sen Door asked, "Are you scolded?"

　　Zen Door Huaihai said, "No."

　　Sen Door said, "What are you crying?"

　　Zen Door Huaihai said, "My nostril was twisted so hard that it hurts."

　　The Tongliao asked, "What are you not in agreement?"

　　Zen Door Huaihai said, "My nostril was twisted so hard that it was not thorough."

　　The Tongliao asked, "What are the causes and conditions that are not in harmony?"

　　Zen Master Huaihai said, "You ask to take the monk."

　So, the same ward came to the abbot's room and asked Mazu, "What is the cause and condition of the servant of the sea? I cried in the dormitory. I told (please) Monk said to a certain A."

　　Master Ma said, "It's Yihui and (he has already enlightened) . You ask to get him."

　　Sen Master Huaihai laughed. Tongliao felt inexplicably and asked, "I came to (just) to cry, why am I laughing now?"

　　Zen Master Huaihai said, "I came to cry, I laugh now."

　　Tongliao heard it and didn't know why.

　The next day, Mazu went to the hall to make a statement. The masses gathered together, but Zen Master Huaihai walked out and swept away Mazu's seat. Mazu then got off the seat and returned to the abbot's room. Zen Master Huaihai also followed him in.

　　Mazu asked, "I haven't spoken yet, why are you so I just rolled the table?"

　　Zen Master Huaihai said, "I was twisted by a monk yesterday and had a headache."

　　Mazu asked, "What are you paying attention to yesterday?"

　　Zen Master Huaihai said, "The nose doesn't hurt today."

　　Mazu said, "You know what happened yesterday."

　　Zen Master Huaihai then bowed.

Another day, Zen Master Huaihai visited Mazu again and stood beside Mazu. Mazu picked up the whisk beside the rope bed and held it high.

　　Zen Master Huaihai asked: "This is the use, but it is not the use?"

　　Mazu then put the whisk back to its original place.

　　After a while, Mazu asked, "You open two pieces of skin backwards. What will you do to be a human? (How will you teach people when you speak in the future? ?"

　　Zen Master Huaihai also held up the whisk beside the bed.

　　Mazu said, "This is the use, it is different from this?"

　　After hearing this, Zen Master Huaihai also put the whisk back to his original place.

　　At this time, Mazu suddenly became trembling and yelled. This drink was so powerful that Zen Master Huaihai was deaf for three days!

The above two cases are very dramatic and full of Zen opportunities.For thousands of years, they have been chanted in the Zen forest and have become one of the main topics for Zen practitioners to study.

After Mazu fell silent, Zen Master Huaihai once lived next to the Mazu Tower in Shimen Mountain to practice in silence. Later, at the invitation of the believers, he came to Xinwu, Hongzhou (now Fengxin County, Jiangxi) , Daxiong Mountain, stationed in Xichuan Chan. For a moment, monks from all directions competed to attend the ceremony. Because this mountain is high and steep, people are called Baizhang Mountain, so Zen Master Huaihai is also called Baizhang Monk, or Baizhang Huaihai .

　　　　Hanzhang Zen Master was destroyed in the ninth year of Yuanhe (814) Spring and Autumn 65 years old. His famous disciples of Fa include Huangbo Xiyun, Weishan Lingyou, etc. The jungle life system and the ( Baizhang Qinggui ) founded by Master Baizhang before his lifetime had a profound impact on the development of Chinese Zen.

The "Baizhang Qing Rules" formulated by Zen Master Baizhang is a banner of Chinese Zen Buddhism. The main spirit is:

The jungle is prosperous with nothing. It is safe to practice to recite the Buddha's name.

Knowledge is based on diligence. Cause and effect are to understand it as nothing wrong.

: Impermanence is the warning of old age and death. Buddhist affairs are precise and strict.

serves as a sincere offering. The mountain gate is solemn with the elders.

Everything is based on pre-establishment. Be humble and respectful in dealing with the public.

When in danger, keeping yourself calm is determined. Compassion is the foundation for helping things.
