Prominent family background and lofty ambitions

In the sixth year of the Guangxu period, Li Shutong was born in a Sanheyuan in Tianjin. His father Li Shizhen was a wealthy salt merchant. In 1918, 38-year-old Li Shutong, wearing Haiqing , wearing Mianshoe , became a monk at Hupao Temple in Hangzhou, with the Dharma name "Hongyi". Everything about Li Shutong instantly dissipated in the world. He gave his precious collection to his friends, sealed the gold and stone antiques on Xiling Seal Society , and sent the money back to his family and Japanese wife in Tianjin.

After being ordained, Master Hongyi strictly abides by the precepts, does not serve as an abbot, does not retain disciples, and lives a simple life. A piece of clothing has more than 200 patches, and an umbrella has been used for decades. He used a flat willow branch as a toothbrush, dipped in salt water to brush his teeth, and ate with relish the radish that others threw away. Master Hongyi devoted himself to, and his precepts were harsh and profound, which almost became a unique skill. So he vowed to interpret the scriptures, wrote books and made a statement, and would eventually lead to the Nanshan Vinaya School, which had been lost for more than 700 years, and would carry forward it.
