Zen Master Fahai, Shaozhou, , Sixth Patriarch, , Fashen Master Huineng, is from Qujiang, Guangdong. His biography has not been found in his life. " Platform Sutra " was compiled by him. The enlightenment process of his enlightenment in "Jingde Chuan Lanlu" and "Five Lamps and Euyuan" are recorded as follows:

The first meeting with the Sixth Patriarch, Zen Master Fahai asked: " is the mind that is Buddha , I wish to point to the metaphor."

The Sixth Patriarch said: "The mind that does not arise is the mind, and the mind that does not perish after the mind that does not perish is the Buddha. Achieve all appearances is the mind, and apart from all appearances is the Buddha. If I have said it, it will never end. Listen to my verse:

"The mind is called wisdom, and the Buddha is concentration. The mind is pure in concentration and wisdom.

Adhering to this method is based on your habits. Use the original without birth, dual cultivation is correct. "

After hearing this, Zen Master Fahai said that he had a great enlightenment, and then praised him with a verse:

"The mind is the Buddha, and he betrays himself without realizing it.

I know the causes of concentration and wisdom, and practice both to be free from all things. ”

Shouzhou Zhitong Zen Master

Zhen Master Zhitong, the Dharma heir of the Sixth Patriarch Huineng, Shouzhou (located in Shou County, Anhui Province) is from Anfeng. He first read the Lankavatara Sutra about a thousand times, but he did not know the meaning of the three bodies and four wisdoms. So he went to Caoxi to worship the Sixth Patriarch and seek to solve the meaning.

The Sixth Patriarch said: "The three bodies are pure Dharma bodies, and your nature is your nature. The perfect reward body is your wisdom. Thousands of billions of incarnations are your actions. If you leave your true nature, you will not talk about the three bodies, which is called having a body but not wisdom. If one realizes that the three bodies have no self-nature, it is called the Four Wisdom Bodhi. Listen to my verse:

"The self-nature possesses three bodies, and invents the four wisdoms. It is not separated from the causes of seeing and hearing, and reaches the Buddha's realm transcendently.

I am telling you now that you will never be confused. Don't learn to seek, and talk about Bodhi all day long."

Zen Master Zhitong asked again: "I have understood the meaning of the three bodies, so what is the meaning of the four wisdoms?"

The Sixth Patriarch said: "Since you understand the three bodies, you will understand the four wisdoms. Why ask more about evil? If you leave the three bodies, don't talk about the four wisdoms. This is called wisdom but no body. That is, this is wisdom, but it becomes wisdom."

  Another verse says:

"The great round mirror is pure in wisdom, and the equal wisdom is free from disease.

The wonderful observation wisdom is not effective, and the wisdom is created is the same as the round mirror.

Five, eighty, six and seven fruits are transformed, but in famous words, there is no real nature.

If you show no mercy in the place of revolving, is prosperous and eternal place of Nagata ."

Turning consciousness into wise people, the teaching says: Turning the first five consciousnesses to to to wise wisdom , turn the sixth consciousness into wonderful observation wisdom, turn the seventh consciousness into equality wisdom, turn the eighth consciousness into round mirror wisdom. Although the six or seven causes are in the middle and the five or eight causes are round, they can change their name but not their body.

Zen Master Zhitong heard the verse and realized the original meaning of the three bodies, four wisdoms, and immediately bowed and thanked the Sixth Patriarch again, and wrote a verse and praised it:

"The three bodies are inherent in my body, and the four wisdoms are inherent in the mind.

The body and wisdom are unobstructed, and they follow the body.

After practicing, you will move recklessly, and you will keep the non-true essence.

The wonderful meaning is because the teacher knows, and it will eventually contaminate the name."
