TSMC Chairman Liu Deyin recently stated that the new crown pneumonia epidemic has enabled digital transformation , which originally took 10 years to complete, to reach within one year. Liu Deyin delivered a special speech on the 3rd at the Li Guoding commemorative forum with the title "Based on China and Taiwan, looking at the world - the next decade of the semiconductor industry". He said that the invention of integrated circuit has been more than 60 years ago, and it occupies an indispensable position in human life and makes the future full of infinite possibilities. The continuous progress of semiconductors is the core of creating the application of new technologies and the foundation for promoting new technologies. In the past two years, under the influence of the epidemic, human life has changed, the world has accelerated digitalization, and the home economy such as long-distance work, distance learning, and long-distance e-commerce have allowed the digital transformation that originally took more than 10 years to evolve into everyone's life within one year.
Looking to the future, Liu Deyin said that the most important development in the next 10 years is the application of HPC (high-efficiency computing), including smartphones, smart cars, smart manufacturing, etc., will greatly promote cloud computing and big data distribution, and high-frequency and low-energy-consuming high-speed networks such as 5G are also everywhere.
Liu Deyin said that from the perspective of the development of the semiconductor industry, the development from 2005 to 2012 comes from material innovation, 2012 to 2020 is the innovation of transistor structure, and the innovation in silicon technology architecture after 2020 is to join system integration, and optimize efficiency and energy consumption. The amount of data will increase greatly in the next 10 years and the transmission speed will accelerate. The meta-universe (Metaverse) that integrates virtual and entity will be possible. The industry predicts that AR will replace mobile phones and VR will replace PCs.
Liu Deyin said that semiconductors have become an open innovation platform now, and more new applications must be used by end users more quickly, and have better prices, and the benefits created from a system perspective can be ensured to ensure sustainable investment and research in the semiconductor industry.
Liu Deyin said that the next 10 years will be the golden age of the semiconductor industry. In the past 50 years, the semiconductor industry has Moore's Law . Reducing the transistor size and increasing the number of transistors are the only directions, just like moving forward in a tunnel, but now it is close to the exit of the tunnel, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to shrink. However, outside the exit, it may be clear and there are various possibilities. In the past, the driving force of semiconductors in Taiwan was to reduce costs, and in the future, it will bring broader economic benefits at the system and application levels. New production processes and advanced packaging technologies are crucial to the continuous advancement of the industry.
