When Sima Hui recommended talents to Liu Bei, Cao Cao had basically unified the north. Sima Yi’s father was an official in Xuchang, but Sima Yi did not. May defect to Liu Bei. Sima Hui appreciates Liu Bei so much that he recommends Zhuge Liang and Pang Tong, two top talents to Liu Bei. If Sima Hui recommends Sima Yi to Liu Bei, Sima Hui is not helping Liu Bei, but entrap Liu Bei. Imagine that if Liu Bei gave Sima Yi a gu, then the surname of Shu would have long ceased to be Liu.
