A friend showed me the following conversation two days ago:
My friend and I complained: How difficult is it for a woman to find a job? Are you going to be asked if you are married? Have you given birth? Does anyone else say that if girls are more careful, men must be careless? Isn't this a proper misogyny?
Yes, why should women be asked about this when looking for a job, but men will not? It's too unfair. Then I wonder if it’s a stereotype of misogyny? It's a coincidence that the book at hand has just been bought, which can answer my questions.
The role of identity condition = stereotype?
The author, Crowder, is a black psychologist. His black status allows him to appreciate the differences caused by racial differences since he was a child. When he went to university, he suffered a series of discomforts when he first entered the school-as if he could not integrate into the university surrounded by whites. So he himself devoted himself to answering a question: Does the identity of black people affect the daily life of black people? In other words, does the sensitive topic of racial discrimination really cause the difference between blacks and whites?
This is something I didn't expect at the beginning, so stereotypes involve racial discrimination? As I continued to read, I realized that I was still too naive. The author is a scholar. He only conducted academic research to verify his identity as a black, and then repeated the experiment to expand to other groups, such as women, such as Asians, and finally reached a set of rigorous conclusions.
The author first proposed the term status conditional effect, before understanding the status conditional effect. We must first understand what the identity conditions are. The identity condition is the label given by the group in the society. For example, if the author is black, then the identity condition is black. For example, JK Rowling is a writer,Then her identity condition is a writer. The identity condition may be your innate identity, such as the author’s skin color, or it may be your occupation, such as a writer or a programmer.
Then the effect of physical conditioning is, as the name implies, the impact of identity tags in daily life situations, even if they are unwilling or unexpected, they will have an impact unknowingly. As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the situation encountered by women in job hunting is a kind of identity conditional effect.
The follow-up author called the role of identity conditions a stereotype, and proposed that the stereotype is a part of cultural and social history. In fact, it seems that not only misogyny is a kind of stereotype, but other forms of it can be found almost everywhere in daily life: programmers are straight men; girls are not good at science; couriers are not qualified; rural areas People are very simple; foreigners have money.
can say so much in one breath, it can be seen that stereotypes are everywhere, always by our side. The author tells us four general theories through this book:
- Everyone will face the stereotypes brought about by status conditions, men and women, skin color, race.
- The stereotypes of identity conditions can cause socio-political problems
- The stereotypes of identity conditions can affect people’s cognitive behavior and health
- We can use some tricks to reduce this phenomenon
The hazards and antidote of stereotypes
The hazards of stereotypes are the more important knowledge in my opinion. Here are two hazards: the first is the impact on our performance; the second is the hazard to our health. In the final analysis, the two hazards are actually a process of interaction: because we are worried about certain stereotypes (for example, girls are not good at science), this worry triggers anxiety, causes blood pressure to rise, and ultimately makes our cognitive resources ( Brain neuron activity) are focused on resisting stereotypes, and our attention has been diverted from the current task, so our performance is unsatisfactory.
It is precisely because of the discovery of multiple hazards of stereotypes, the author followed the research to find a solution. In the end, the author believes that stereotypes work with changes in situations, so we need to use a variety of methods to change the environment to make ourselves feel a safe identity and stagger the effects of dangerous identities.
Here I summarize the various methods into two ways: ① Eliminate the situational factors that cause stereotypes, such as organizing discussion groups that require diversity of group members, and the number of members is small; establishing strict and close trust Sense; build a sense of belonging. ② Establish a sense of identity security through various interventions, such as self-affirmation; growth thinking; use diverse resources for activities. Both of these approaches are making a fuss about the living environment. It can be seen that to eliminate the impact may have to be done from a young age.
Conclusion
Although "Stereotypes" is an academic monograph, the author uses simple and interesting stories to explore an argument in each chapter, and uses detailed text to tell us how to design a scientific Experiment, how to demonstrate such an argument. Each argumentation process is a journey of academic research, interesting and professional, which can be called an academic template.
My book review can only select the essence of the essence, but failed to show the wonderful process of how a series of conclusions are drawn. It is really a pity, especially how stereotypes work makes us feel Influence. If you are interested, just go and see it as soon as possible.
