[This article describes the causes and conditions of the eight meetings between Lay Practitioner Jiang Wenze and Master Hongyi, as well as the opportunities and revelations for the previous requests for Dharma]

[This article was written on the evening of the sixth day of the ninth lunar month in Renwu at Ronglian Hall. , layman Jiang Wenze wrote this article at home on the evening of October 15, 1942. Rongliantang is the residence of layman Jiang Wenze. Master Hongyi passed away on October 13th. On the 15th, Master Hongyi took his last photo at 11am. He entered the shrine at 1pm and left the shrine at 3pm to Chengtian Temple. Layman Jiang Wenze is one of the eight laymen who carry niches. 】

Master Dehui of Luoji Yigong

Master Yan【that is, layman Jiang Wenze (1906-1995)】

The rest of the people who became famous as Master Wen began with "Master Yinguang Wenchao", "Buddhist Semimonthly" and " Hanjiaji " and other books. My heart always admires it.

█ The first time

Time: 1938 (February of the Wuyin Year)

Place: Kaiyuan Temple, Quanzhou

Scene: Master Hongyi lectured at the Ci'er Yuan of Kaiyuan Temple

Instructions: Listening to the scriptures, no communication

Republic of China II In the seventeenth year [1938] , the master lectured in Kaiyuan. I attended the meeting and saw his kind face, but he did not dare to come near to pay homage. From then on, the desire to be intimate will always remain in my heart.

█ The second time

Time: January 23, 1942 (the seventh day of the twelfth lunar month in the Xinsi year)

Location: Baiyuan Temple in Quanzhou

Scene: A special visit to

Enlightenment: Kind encouragement, instructions to follow "Master Yin Guang's Notes" After practicing

in the winter, I heard that Master came to the spring and stayed in Baiyuan for a few days. I am so lucky to have achieved success due to circumstances. So on the seventh day of the twelfth lunar month [January 23, 1942] respectfully paid homage. The master's majesty is as high as Mount Tai, and his treatment of others exceeds the moonlight. As soon as they met, he said: "Businessman, where are you from? You took refuge in Master Yinguang. You bought Buddhist books from Shanghai to give to others. It's very good." Well, the master was so kind and encouraging, which made me feel ashamed. , What's the obstacle in the past, not being able to pay homage to Duke Guang? How lucky is it now that I can get a close relative of Duke Guang? Make a ritual and beg for instructions. The master said, as long as you print official documents and practice it seriously, it will be very appropriate. The great teacher's words are concise and full of meaning. One should practice the teachings of dealing with the world, and they are all summed up in one sentence. The rest is to understand the meaning, so there is no place to open it.

█ third

Time: January 1942

location; Quanzhou Baiyuan Temple htmm L2

Scene: Please

Decent: there are drowsy and dreams when you work hard. If you continue On days of hard work, lethargy and dreams become more common. Begging for instructions from the teacher. The master said, it’s okay, this is due to past karma, but if you continue to work hard and don’t be attached, these obstacles will gradually decrease.

█ The fourth time

Time: January 1942

Place: Quanzhou Baiyuan Temple

Scene: Please recite the Buddhist teachings

Instructions: Listen to the bell and recite the Buddha. The bell should be slightly louder. The clock is stable. Just recite the four words "Amitabha". The four words are added up and recited five times for easy counting. It is appropriate to pinch the beads and recite the Buddha's four or five sentences after one bead.

Remember it again, because when you recite the Buddha's thoughts, you are unable to eliminate them. After that, I spontaneously started to recite by listening to the sound of the clock, or by visualizing the six characters of Namo Amitabha in Chinese (reciting one sentence for each sentence, thinking of one word, and repeating the cycle). These two methods , use one at will, and the delusion will gradually fade away. However, I am afraid that it may not be consistent with the meaning of the scriptures, and may lead to all kinds of evil things. So I begged the teacher for correction. The teacher said, it’s very good. However, the sound of the bell used should not be too low. It is better to use a large self-ringing bell. If it is small, it will move quickly and is not suitable for listening. It must also be placed stably so that the sound of the tripod is even and equal. Listening to the bell and reciting the Buddha's name in this way will reduce your delusional thoughts. Another cloud. More than ten years ago, I wrote an article on listening to the bell and chanting the Buddha's name, and submitted it to Master Yin Guang. Master Guang agreed with it. As for the method of reciting the Buddha's name while thinking about it, the teacher said that it is relatively simple to think about the four words of Amitabha. The characters in mind must be very obvious, and the font and brushwork should be as they are now. The clearer the words you see, the calmer your mind will be. Every time you recite a word of Buddha, think of one word. After thinking about four words, until the fifth sentence, you will always think about four words. In the sixth sentence, think of the first word again. Working hard like this is the easiest way to get carried away. Others are like pinching beads to recite the Buddha's name. If one sentence exceeds one bead, it will be too busy. If ten sentences exceed one sentence, it may be difficult to remember them clearly. The most appropriate one is to use four or five sentences to cross one bead, then the number is appropriate, and the heart is easy to return to one. However, pinching the beads while sitting seems to be laborious, and it is not as peaceful as listening to the bell.

█ The fifth

time: January 31, 1942 (the fifteenth day of the twelfth lunar month in the Xinsi year)

location: Baiyuan Temple, Quanzhou

scene: introduction to the layman Zeng who converted to Master Hongyi

teachings: Dunlun and Xiujing teachings, On the twelfth lunar month [January 31, 1942], I introduced Western Buddhist teachings such as abstaining from killing and vowing to live in the West. I introduced Zeng Wenrong, a lay Buddhist, to take refuge in the master. The lotus hangs down to accept it, so it is named Shengrong. When taking refuge, the master personally came to the Buddha to give guidance, and the ceremony was solemn, which made people feel refreshed. The next day, the master taught the essentials of the Dharma, and all of them followed the teachings of Dun Lun and Xiu Jing. They breathed the same breath as Master Yin Guang. Instructions such as abstaining from killing and vowing to live in the West are again taken seriously.

█ The sixth

time: February 4, 1942 (the 19th day of the twelfth lunar month of the Xinsi year, the beginning of spring)

place: Quanzhou Baiyuan Temple

scene: accompanying layman Yang to visit Master Hongyi

enlightenment: practice requires a discipline To go deeper, it is recommended to practice the Pure Land Dharma, read the "Records of Glorious Sayings of Master Yin Guang", read Buddhist scriptures carefully, and don't learn to make alchemy luck.

At the same time, I accompanied layman Yang [Layman Yang Yanjie] to pray for help. The master told me that you should practice deeply in one discipline and practice for a long time, only then can you hope to achieve success. If there is no master in the heart, if you see things differently and have different aspirations, how can you succeed? He also said that if you practice now and seek for its mechanism to be double-coordinated, easy to use and easy to treat, it is in the Pure Land Dharma. You can read the notes of Master Yin Guang and the Records of Good Sayings. Especially the Records of Good Sayings are categorized and easy to read. If you don't understand the beginning, you may want to read the more obvious parts in the middle first. Reading Buddhist books should never be like reading a newspaper, where you stop once you glance at it. You must play it carefully, read one or two paragraphs at a time, or just a few lines, repeat it over and over again, understand the meaning through the text, remember it and practice it, in order to gain practical benefits. He also asked not to learn the method of alchemy and luck.

█ The seventh time

Time: February 1942

Location: Baiyuan Temple, Quanzhou

Scene: Accompany Zheng Wu, the current layman, to visit Master Hongyi

Revelation: Refining alchemy is not a Buddhist method, chanting Buddha's name to survive in the West

Sixty-year-old man Zheng Wu is now a layman, I heard that the master came to the spring to invite me to visit him. The master also explained in detail that refining alchemy is not a Buddhist method and its pros and cons. He also said to the old lay people that they should be sincere and encourage all Zhaitangs (zhaitangs are commonly known as Caitangs). Do lessons in the morning and evening, recite the Buddha's name, practice Mahayana Buddhism, and replace the time spent in refining elixirs with upholding the precepts and chanting the Buddha's name to seek rebirth in the West. The benefits will be immeasurable, and the merits of those who persuade others will also be immeasurable. I said that the method of refining elixirs cannot reach immortality in the extreme. Although the lifespan is longer than that of human beings, there will still be a day when it will eventually end and fall. The so-called "different physiology" means that one can live for tens of thousands of years, and when one's retribution is exhausted, one will come back and disperse into various realms. Details are given at the end of the eighth volume of " Shurangama Sutra ". If you use it to seek life and death, it is like cooking sand to make rice. However, he misquotes the ancestral sayings of Buddhist scriptures and mixes up Buddhist rituals, which may be difficult for beginners to distinguish. (Familiar with Master Yinguang's manuscripts in the main edition and the sequel to Li Yinsou's book, you will be able to distinguish it from Zhuang Huiju's book.) The same is true for Yu Xi. You should be mistaken. If you don't read Master Yinguang's manuscripts, you will be wrong. You also think you are right, but you know it is wrong. Also, I know that if you are reborn with karma, it will be easy to cultivate quickly, but if you firmly believe in your vows, you will be able to decide between life and death and reach the Pure Land without retreat. Extremely dangerous. Fortunately.

█ The eighth

Time: September 2, 1942 (July 22, Renwu Year)

Location: Wenling Nursing Home, Quanzhou

Scene: Lay Master Jiang Wenze asked Master Hongyi for advice on the rituals of ordination novices . Hongyi The Master edited the "Hair-Shaving Ceremony" and presented it with

instructions: Master Miaolian presented lay practitioner Jiang Wenze with a copy of the "Hair-Shaving Ceremony" edited by Master Hongyi. He asked about the general situation of Sakyamuni Temple and urged to keep the rules and observe the precepts. , recite the Buddha's name, and encourage people to practice without slacking.

This summer at Sakya Temple, the ordination ritual of a novice monk has many deficiencies and many remaining issues. I leave it to the teacher to correct it. Master Shi retreated to Wenling Nursing Home and sent a letter to report. Xuan was entrusted with the order and promised to see him after July 21st [September 1, 1942]. Yu Nai paid his respects on the second day. At the banquet, the master produced a volume of the manuscript of the tonsure ceremony, stating that it had been lost for more than seven or eight hundred years since the time of Lingzhi Lawyer. At the end of Guangxu, it was returned from the East. Today I am deleting this volume, which was performed by several teachers yesterday. This volume was restored and gifted by Master Miaolian. In the future, those who are determined to become a monk will be taught according to this. If they are not clear about it, they can ask Master Miaolian and Shoushan for guidance, and they should follow the Dharma. Analyze the rest of the story in detail. After asking about the general situation of Sakyamuni Temple, he was strongly advised to follow the rules, observe the precepts and recite the Buddha's name. Finally, he asked about the dying situation of the old layman Boqiu. Do not neglect your practice again. This time I have been paying my respects to you for the longest time, and my warm edicts are always there. Wow, unexpectedly this is the last lesson.

Today [October 15, 1942, 3:00 pm] Everyone went to Chengtian to carry the master's shrine, and I also participated in the carrying of the shrine (carried by eight upasakas who had passed through Haiqing). Along the way, it looks like a tidal wave, recalling the eight personal visits, and benefiting greatly. Now our master’s body is on our shoulders, but his loving face is no longer visible, all his emotions are still there, and his tears are flowing freely. It has been less than two years since my master Guang Gong passed into nirvana, and Yi Gong passed away again. Ordinary people are deeply hindered, often lose their mentors, and the dangerous road is long and dangerous. How can they rely on themselves? The words are in my ears, and they are unforgettable in my mind. I express my gratitude to Master Ji for his kindness and express my sorrow.
