Medical guidance: Professor Li Yan, Director of the Department of Psychological Sleep of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine
"I have told her many times, don't think about these things that are not there. It's okay to go out for a walk more, why can't I listen to it? Alas..." A family member of an depressed patient said this. The patient sitting on the clinic chair next to her silently cried after hearing it, with helplessness and guilt on his face. Such scenes are not uncommon in the clinics of the Psychological Sleep Department.
At present, depression is getting closer and closer to us, and it may be that family, friends or colleagues are experiencing the torture of depression. When people around us suffer from depression, it is normal for us to help them cope with the symptoms of depression, give them support, and regain the happiness of the past as soon as possible. So what should we do?

1. Acknowledge that their depression
has different severity. Mild depression may only show bad mood, no interest in many things, easy fatigue, etc. Severe depression will have a sense of despair, self-incrimination, memory and attention loss, and even self-injury and suicide thoughts or behaviors. They may feel helpless, frustrated, angry, fear, self-blame or sadness. These emotions are real and painful. Don’t easily blame them for “moaning without illness” and “making a big deal”. They are experiencing the torture of diseases that we cannot see or even the current test cannot be found.
2. Seek professional help
Don’t try to “rescue” your relatives or friends with depression alone. The treatment of depression requires a standardized psychiatric diagnosis and treatment process. You cannot “cure” them directly, but you can encourage them to seek professional help. Patients with depression often have weak motivation to seek treatment. Therefore, it is within your ability to accompany them to register, see a doctor, get medicine, check up, and pay attention to their medication and treatment.
3. Pay attention to the diagnosis and treatment of patients with depression
Because patients with depression have weak treatment motivation and poor compliance with medication, it is particularly important to pay attention to remind patients to take medication on time and in accordance with the regular dose. For patients with prominent negative ideas, family members need to manage the medication, provide the patients with regular and regular dosages, and observe the medication situation each time. Since depression has a standardized treatment course, even if the patient's condition improves, as people around you, you need to remind the patient to insist on treatment, and the adjustment of the drug plan must be carried out under the guidance of a psychiatrist.
4. Identify the risk of self-injury and suicide
Self-injury and suicide is the biggest risk of depression. Therefore, it is extremely important to understand these risk signals when people around you suffer from depression. They may have recently expressed the following words and deeds:
talks about suicide, death or harming themselves, and focus on the thoughts related to death;
expresses hopelessness and obvious sense of meaninglessness or expresses feelings of self-loathing;
makes dangerous self-injury or self-harm For;
meet and say goodbye to the people around you;
look for drugs, weapons or other deadly items;
...
Maybe it's hard for you to believe that the person you are familiar with and deeply loved will consider such an extreme way, but for a depressed patient, the negative emotional experience of depression will shake his cognition, disrupt his thinking and judgment, break down his inner defense, and make a rational person ultimately believe that suicide is the only way to end his pain. If you find that someone around you may be considering suicide, please tell him openly that you are worried about him and hope to accompany him for professional help. If you find someone committing suicide, must not leave your sight, remove dangerous items on or around the patient, ensure the safety of the surrounding environment, and take the patient to a psychiatric specialist for medical supervision and treatment as soon as possible.
Depression is not a terminal illness, it is a "cold of the soul", but if you don't pay attention in time, it may develop into "pneumonia of the soul" and even go to death. When people around you experience depression, please listen and accompany them, make less judgments, face up to the disease, encourage and accompany them to receive professional medical treatment as soon as possible.
