I work in a university. I am a psychiatrist, a psychologist, and a doctor of clinical psychology. In addition to providing counseling services for students in colleges and universities, my very important work is suicide prevention and crisis intervention. So my next topic may be a bit heavy.
The core issue I discussed today is about " hollow heart disease ", which is a term coined by me. Of course, as a psychiatrist, I seem to have the power to invent a new disease, which probably has something to do with everyone.
It is not that students are hollow, but the whole society is hollow.
First of all, I want to start with what happened this year. In July of this year, my wife, daughter and I were on vacation at Mauritius. It was about 14:00 Beijing time. A student of my university sent me a WeChat message with the content: I now have a bottle of magic potion in my hand. , I don’t know how it tastes.
He is a suicidal student, so I quickly reply. I asked him what kind of water it was, and he told me it was potassium cyanide, which was deadly in ten seconds. This is the longest crisis intervention I have ever carried out. Of course, this child was rescued and he is a very good student.
In May of this year, one day when I was in an evening class, an off-campus psychological counselor called and said that a visitor was a student.Now it seems that I committed suicide by taking poison in the dormitory. I asked the whole story and started the crisis intervention program. I found this classmate in the dormitory and sent him to the hospital for rescue.
I have known him for 4 years and he was very good when he entered the school. In the first semester after entering Peking University, his grades were ranked first in the college, but just in that semester, even before that semester, he had the experience of attempting suicide.
He was originally a very good kid who can do good academic and scientific research. In the past four years, our psychological counseling center, his parents and the teachers in the department have tried their best to put him back on track. Four years later, he was hospitalized, took medicine, and all treatments were exhausted. He still had no business. In the end, his parents decided to let him give up his studies and quit school and go home.
I have seen very good children. What I want to say is that all the students I am talking about are very good and very good students at the university.
There is an excellent doctoral student in science and engineering. He completed his research in the second year of his Ph.D. and reached the doctoral level. This is what his supervisor told me. He tried to give up his life time and time again. He was hospitalized twice at that time and used all the drugs and all the treatments for electric convulsions. When I was discharged from the hospital, I asked him how he was doing. He said that the psychiatrist was naive and ridiculous. I acted a little happier, they thought I was depressed.
What I want to say is that it is not an ordinary depression, it is a very serious new condition. I call it "hollow disease". I don't think it's just that the students are hollow, the whole society is hollow, and this is the result. We often say that if a child has a problem, probably both the family and the teacher have problems, and the child itself will not have a problem.
This is my visitor. I got their permission. They will write out their personal feelings and tell me. There was a college entrance examination champion who said that he felt that he was on a torn apart island. He didn't know what he was doing or what he wanted to get, and he felt fear from time to time. In 19 years, he has never lived for himself, and he has never lived, so he will easily give up his life.
Another classmate told me, “Learning well and working well are the basic requirements. If I study well and my work is not good enough, I will not be able to live. But it does not mean that I will be happy because I study well and work well. I don’t Knowing why I want to live, I am always dissatisfied with myself,Always want to do better in all aspects, but this kind of life seems to have no head.

What is "hollow heart disease"?
Let me briefly talk about what is hollow heart disease.
Hollow heart disease looks like depression, low mood, loss of interest, lack of pleasure, if If you go to a psychiatric hospital, you will definitely be diagnosed and treated for depression, but the problem is that all drugs are ineffective.
As psychiatrists, we have a good killer, that is, if any depression patient is treated with electric convulsions, he can It recovers quickly in a short time, but electric convulsive therapy is useless for hollow heart disease.
They have a strong sense of loneliness and meaninglessness. They have been the best students since childhood, the most well-behaved students, they They also particularly need to be praised by others, but they have strong suicidal thoughts and do not want to commit suicide. They just don’t know why to live, what is the value and meaning of life? So they will use a more gentle way, and of course they will give us a chance. Save him.
The core problem is the lack of values that support its sense of meaning and existence. What is the common phenomenon? Several students told me, "I don't know why I want to study, I don't know me. Why live. I only live according to the logic of others. "The most extreme of these is to give up oneself.
So we return to the very ultimate question, why do people live? What is the meaning of life? What is the most important thing for us? They do not It’s not just born. They will tell me that I have had such doubts since I was in junior high school. Until now I have made a decision to end my life. Traditional Western medicine and psychotherapy have no effect on them.
For a crisis interventionist and a psychologist,We are also facing challenges that we have never had before. We also have to face the same question, what is the value and meaning of life, do we have it in our hearts? If we don't have one, how can we give them?
Students hiding in Internet cafes to play games is a failure of education
Let’s take a look at the current situation in China.
I used a term of anxiety economics. I do think that the way people can spend money blindly will cause anxiety, collapse, and fear. This is probably a characteristic of our time.
Let's take a look at the prevalence of mental disorders in Chinese. In the 1980s and 1990s, only 1 out of 100 Chinese people had a mental disorder. This figure has reached 17.5% by 2005. There are 1,000 people in this room, and 180 of us here should go to to settle down. The hospital should see a doctor, and it may not be optimistic.
How did Chinese mental disorders become so bad? In fact, we are not suffering from any biological diseases. The incidence of schizophrenia has always remained the same. In the past 30 years, something has become bigger, anxiety and depression, anxiety and depression.
Let’s take a look at this data. The incidence of anxiety disorders was about 1% to 2% in the 1980s, but now it’s 13%. At present, at least 13 out of every 100 Chinese people are patients with anxiety disorders. A worse situation is the incidence of depression disorder. I have been a psychiatrist for 20 years. When I first became a psychiatrist, the incidence of mental disorders and depression in Chinese people was 0.05%, and now it is 6%, which has increased 120 times in 20 years. This is an explosive growth, and I think there is something very absurd in it. The past 30 years have been the 30 years of rapid economic development in China. The incidence rate of ours, the incidence of anxiety and depression has also increased rapidly.what happened?
data shows: Americans are more depressed than us, and their depression incidence is 9.5%. Why I talk about the United States is because it seems that we have been particularly influenced by the United States in the past 30 years, and of course we have our own inherent culture. Let's take a look at the current education. I'm sorry, what I want to say next may offend you. Is our education helping children grow up or destroying a generation of children?
Since about 2000, every winter and summer vacation, a large number of students will come to the mental hospital. They are addicted to the Internet, anxious, compulsive, and their relationship with their parents is seriously broken. Parents have the courage to send their children. Going to the mental hospital, it can be seen that there is really no way to clean up.
What is our way of dealing with problems? Send them to Internet addiction schools and let them receive electric shocks. Is this education? This is to shirk responsibility. Parents and education are the root of the problem. We don't see the root of ourselves. We only see him hiding in Internet cafes to play games. Why did he hide in Internet cafes to play games? It is because of the failure of education.
The greatest achievement of our education seems to be that students do test papers. There is a popular saying: Improve one point and kill thousands of people. Do you know? My biggest challenge in psychological counseling is how to turn back the values of classmates. Are the classmates around you your enemy? He is the greatest wealth in your life! What is our classroom like? It is constantly suggesting that children commit suicide, and they can spare their lives for good grades.
The suicide rate of the whole country is falling sharply, but the suicide rate of primary and secondary schools is rising. In this case, our children can't wait to enter university. They started to commit suicide in elementary and middle schools.
Let's take a look at some of the measures that some schools respond to? All corridors and windows are equipped with iron fences. I work in a mental hospital, which is like this. My doctoral dissertation was done in prison. The prison is like this, but we actually have the ability to turn the school into a prison and a mental hospital. Just watch these kids, let them go to college, and then let him be my visitor.
How are exquisite egoists developed?
The next question I want to talk about,It will make everyone more frustrated. In a preliminary investigation, I analyzed the family situation of the suicidal student, and assessed which family the child came from, what kind of family, and what kind of parent occupation the child is more likely to attempt suicide — elementary and middle school teacher_ strong24strong.
This is a sample of 38 students in crisis, 50% of which are from teachers' families, and the control group is the children with no problems. Teacher families are still very successful. Among them, teachers’ families account for 21% of all families. The question is why there are so many problems with children from teacher families?
I think that everything is based on scores, ignoring and even the education of students' morality, physical education, and aesthetics has become the education view of many teachers. They fully recognize this view of education and implement it even more vigorously for their children. It may be the main reason for the high incidence of mental health problems in children of teachers' families.
After the commercialization of education, Professor Qian Liqun of Peking University has a description and judgment that I think is very accurate, called an exquisite egoist.
How are refined egoists cultivated? If I were to answer this question, what I want to say is that we parents and teachers are all exquisite egoists, and they learn from us. For a good scientific research result, we sometimes falsify data. In order to make money, we can give up our moral and ethical bottom line. As a doctor, we can receive red envelopes and get rebates. Some teachers don’t talk about knowledge in class, but they talk about it in the tutorial class after get off work...
Why is education?
What is education, and what is school? What is the university? Let me first quote the speech given by Lin Jianhua, President of Peking University when he took office, and he gave an answer to this. He said that Peking University can contribute to the development of the country and the nation, what kind of power does the country and the nation need from Peking University? This is the mission of Peking University. After he finished speaking, more than 800 people in the audience applauded with thunderous applause.
But we seem to have abandoned these long ago,We think noble things are not worth mentioning. What we need is to be able to make money now? But the students don't recognize it anymore, because they don't lack money. This is the value of our society. We believe that earning money is the greater winner in life.
There was once a student who dropped out of school because he didn't want to study economic management at all. He was laughed at by everyone when he volunteered to learn history in the college entrance examination, saying that he would learn history only when his brain was filled with water. Later, the student asked to drop out despite his good economics.
During the November holiday, I took the students to Wan'an Cemetery, because I wanted to find the value and meaning of life together with the students. We saw a very unique cloak in the cemetery, and above it was a teacher named Yin Quan. Teacher Yin Quan died unjustly during the Cultural Revolution in 1970. She had no children.
After 19 years, her students bought a cemetery for her in the cemetery, and wrote this eulogy: For 40 years, she has been persuasive, Tao Zhuqun, dedicated to teaching, consistent, innocent, suffering, abuse, and the teacher's life is magnanimous and innocent. He is sincere, honest and upright in the world, silently devoted to education, and loves his life as a teacher. His sentiment and interest are exemplary of today's people.
Please promise them a good life
I don’t know how many of our educators here will give you such evaluation or affirmation at the end of their lives. What I want to say is that education itself is a very sacred profession, but if we treat education as a tool for earning a living, as a means to obtain money, or to achieve other goals of our own, of course this is a choice, but I feel that we seem to have given up the most important things.
I still want to ask a question here, this is my thinking after these things. When I communicate with those hollow-hearted students, why can't they find themselves? Because their own parents and teachers have not been able to show them how a person lives with dignity, value, and meaningfulness. This is probably the root cause.
I want to ask everyone to ask myself, do we respect ourselves? Do we respect our profession? Have we regarded our profession as a mission and a call to understand the deep meaning of it?This is the age of buying pine and returning beads. I think we have thrown away a lot of things.
Like babies, we only seek immediate satisfaction. When we put all our time and energy on earning money, without giving our children the best company and love, it's strange that our children don't have any problems at this time. Therefore, as a psychologist and psychologist in a university, I call for: I really want to save the child! They enter colleges and universities with serious problems, and their creativity is destroyed by the exam-oriented education and the education with their necks pinched.
A graduate tutor told me a true story. He said that a student always has problems doing research, which is a very pediatric problem. The instructor talked to him and asked him why these problems occurred and what to do? This student came first in the written test. He said, "Teacher, then I will copy the mistakes I made a hundred times." A graduate student corrected his mistakes by copying a hundred times. Our children have not grown up at all and are still in elementary school.
What did education do? I think whether we are parents or teachers, we should be people worthy of the respect of students and children. We must do our best and be exemplary. We must give them the best things in the world, not scores, not money, love, wisdom, yes Creation and happiness, please promise them a better life!
