U.S. stocks were mixed at the close on Wednesday, with gains in the Telecoms , Healthcare and Technology sectors leading the stock index higher; at the same time, losses in the Oil & Natural Gas , Basic Materials and Industrial sectors led the stock index lower.

At the close in New York, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.27%, while the S&P 500 index was down 0.07%, while the Nasdaq Composite index index was down 0.03%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD), which rose 2.02% or 4.91 points to trade at 247.74 at the close. At the same time, Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ: MSFT) rose 1.47% (3.78 points) to close at 260.26; United Health Group (NYSE: UNH) rose 1.43% (7.27 points), with closing at 515.71 in late trading.

The weakest performing stock on the market was Caterpillar Inc. (NYSE:CAT), which fell 2.11% (3.96 points) to close at 183.48. Chevron Corporation (NYSE: CVX ) fell 1.97% or 2.96 points to end at 146.98; American Express (NYSE: AXP ) fell 1.91% or 2.72 points to 139.47.

The best performing stocks on the S&P 2500 were General Mills (NYSE: GIS ), which rose 6.35% to end at 74.72; Abiomed (NASDAQ: ABMD ), which was up 2.97% at the close to 256.49; Monster Monster Beverage (NASDAQ:MNST) rose 2.80% to close at 93.35.

The worst-performing stock Carnival Cruise Line (NYSE: CCL) finally fell 14.13%, closing at 8.87 in late trading; Royal Caribbean Cruises (NYSE: RCL) fell 10.26%, closing at 36.02; in addition, Norwegian Cruise Line (NYSE: NCLH) fell 9.33% to close at 11.57.
