Researchers found that women who have experienced childbirth have lower concentrations of calcium, magnesium and phosphorus in their bodies, and these changes are related to childbirth itself and breastfeeding. This study was recently published in "Public Library of Science-Comprehensive".

A large number of studies spanning decades have shown that various internal and external events, including birth, reproduction, weaning, menopause, disease, dietary changes and climate change, leave permanent records in calcified tissues, even in fossil specimens.

It is reported that bones participate in the physiology of the entire organism and reflect changes in endogenous and exogenous conditions by experiencing changes in growth rate and element composition. "In this study, we used field emission (FE) SEM-EDS to measure changes in the concentrations of five major and minor elements (oxygen, calcium, magnesium, sodium and phosphorus) in the femurs of seven males (n = 3) and females (n = 4) ," the researchers said.

study found that there were significant differences in the relative percentage concentrations of the five elements considered between women with the male child and all other individuals, regardless of the age of bone formation. The sample study found that the difference between birth and unborn females was not related to age. Work on the effects of parity on the mineral content and density of bones of rhesus monkeys also found that skeletal characteristics differ between age-matched male and unborn females. These comprehensive findings suggest that reproduction has a retrospective effect on bone element composition, as previously deposited bones may help meet elemental needs in the developing fetus.

Overall, consistent with the extensive literature documenting the physiological responses to mineral demand in developing fetuses and infants, the concentrations of calcium and phosphorus in the bones formed by women during pregnancy and lactation are lower.
