For eons, mankind has strived hard and looked in every direction to find fulfillment. But if we look at the state of the world today, it has clearly not worked. Sadhguru explains the basic fallacy of seeking on the outside something that actually exists within.

For thousands of years, mankind has been striving to seek satisfaction in all directions. But if we look at the situation in today's world, it is obvious that efforts have not worked. Sadhguru explains the fundamental fallacy: seeking out what actually exists within.

Sadhguru: Fulfillment is not attained by some action. If you look carefully, you will see that at so many points in your life, you thought, “If this happens, my life will become complete.” When you were a child you thought, “If I get this toy, my life will be complete." You got that, but after a few weeks you didn’t care about it. Life did not attain fulfillment. When you were in school you thought that if you passed your examination, life would be complete. That happened, and still nothing happened. Then you thought that if you complete your education, your life would be complete. That too happened. Now you thought, What is the use of all this education if you are not able to stand on your own two feet? That happened. After three months you began to think, what is the use of working like a donkey? If you get married to that man or woman who is in your heart, your life would become complete. That happened and then you know what happened!

Sadhguru (Sadhguru): Satisfaction is not achieved through actions. If you look closely, you will find that many moments in your life you are thinking, "If this happens, my life will be complete." When you were a kid, you thought, "If I got this toy, my life will be complete." You got that toy, but after a few weeks you don't care. Life is not satisfied. When you are in school, you think that if you pass the exam, your life will be complete. The exam passed, but nothing happened. Then you think, if you receive education, your life will be complete. That happened, too. Now you think, if you can't stand on your own, what's the use of all this education? That happened, too. Three months later, you start thinking, what's the use of working like a donkey? If you can marry your beloved man or woman, your life is complete. That happened, and then you also know what happened later!

Whatever action you may have performed, life has not attained any fulfillment. Fulfillment will not come because of some action that you perform. Only if your inner nature is complete, your life will attain fulfillment. If your inner nature is unbounded, your life is also unbounded. Now, you can either sit with your eyes closed or you can perform different actions, either way your life is complete. When man has reached a state where within himself, he does not have the need to perform any action and the actions that he performs are only to the extent required for the external situation, that man has become complete.

No matter what you do, life will not gain any satisfaction. Satisfaction will not be obtained by one of your actions. Only when your inner essence is perfect can your life be satisfied. If your inner essence is unlimited, your life is equally vast. Now you can sit with your eyes closed or take different actions, and your life is complete no matter what. When a person reaches such a state within himself, he does not need to take any action. The actions he puts into are merely necessary to deal with the external situation, and he is already perfect.

Please see, why have you been performing one action after another? It is towards fulfillment. People who perform action in excess, when you ask them why they are doing all that they are doing, they answer, “What to do? Food, wife, kids – who will take care of them?” The truth is, even if you fulfill all his needs, this person cannot sit quietly for even a day. He cannot even sit for three hours! He has to do something. This is because your inner nature has not attained fulfillment and you are trying to do it through actions. Your actions are not happening for your food or comforts; they are all happening in search of fulfillment. Whether this has happened with or without awareness, the actions indicate the search for unboundedness.

Please see, why have you taken one action after another? For satisfaction. Those who overbear, when you ask them why they do all this, they will answer: "Otherwise? Food, wife, children - who will take care of them?" The truth is that even if you meet all his needs, this person can't stay quiet for even one day. He couldn't even sit for three hours! He has to do something. This is because your inner essence is not satisfied, and you try to obtain it through actions. Your actions are not for your food or comfort; they are all for your sense of satisfaction. Whether this happens with awareness or not, these actions indicate the pursuit of infinite.

If, within you, your inner nature has attained fulfillment, there will be no need for action. If the external situation demands some action, you can do it joyously. If it is not needed, you can simply sit with eyes closed. When a person has reached a state where there is no need to perform any action, we can say that person has become unbounded. That does not mean that this person does not do any work at all. If the external situation demands it, he can work twenty-four hours. But action is not needed for his inner nature. He is not bound to action. He is the same, even without action.

If the external situation requires certain actions, you can happily do it. If it is not necessary, you can just sit with your eyes closed. When a person reaches a state where he does not need to do anything, we can say that the person has become unbounded. This does not mean that this person does nothing. If the external situation requires it, he can work 24 hours a day. But his inner nature does not require action, and he is not limited to action. Even without action, he was no different.
