Today is the birthday of Academician Feng Xinde (October 12, 1915-October 24, 2005). He is one of the pioneers of polymer chemistry in China. He opened his first major course in polymer chemistry in China and established the first polymer chemistry teaching and research department in the country. He has made outstanding achievements in the research of olefin radical polymerization and charge transfer photopolymerization, grafting and block copolymerization, medical polymer materials, slow-release polymers of biodegradable drugs, and the initial reaction mechanism of polymer aging and bioaging. He synthesized block copolymers of different structures through molecular design to control the release rate of drugs, and first developed five medical polyether urethane anticoagulant materials in China. He has been engaged in education for more than 50 years and has trained a large number of polymer chemistry talents. It has made significant contributions to the development of China's polymer science and polymer chemistry education. In 1980, he was elected as an academician of , Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was elected as an academician of of , Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Feng Xinde believes that school teaching and scientific research are of course very important, but the most fundamental thing is to produce talents. He described the teacher as a gardener, saying that if one load of water is used to water flowers, more than ten loads of water should be carried in the tank. He encouraged the students and said: "A person's life is diverse and colorful. It can be made of jewelry, jade, silk, satin, or a clean and simple meal.
