It is important to put the virus in a cage

New York Times NT published an article on the column that, but the last case of smallpox came from a laboratory. In 1978, a British medical photographer was accidentally infected at the University of Birmingham School of Medicine. She died after she spread the virus to her mother, but luckily, it didn't spread further. The respected virologist in charge of the lab committed suicide, and colleagues said he was hunted down by reporters in search of the culprit.

A year before, the 1977 flu pandemic swept the world, caused by a previously extinct strain of the influenza virus. While some believe the pandemic was caused by a laboratory accident, many scientists (including me) think it is likely caused by a wrong vaccine trial.

These disasters seem unlikely to repeat. Research on smallpox virus is now highly restricted, and no one will conduct vaccine trials on extinct influenza strains today, and the safety of laboratories has been greatly improved since the 1970s.
