UK National Health Service hopes to prevent new HIV cases by 2030 after signing a series of agreements to ensure new drugs are available nationwide to eliminate regional differences.
HIV-infected people can use cabotegravir and rilpivirine in the injection forms, while those with drug-resistant infections will be able to receive fostemsavir after approval last week.
The new treatment will be available to around 148,000 people across England, ending uncertainty among HIV-infected people in areas where they are not always confident of getting the best treatment.
Cabotegravir is always used in combination with rilpivirine and was approved for use in January and only requires injections every two months, which is different from a pill that must be taken daily and may permanently lose its effectiveness if the dose is missed.
HIV treatment aims to keep the number of viral particles in the blood (called viral load) low enough to be undetectable or spread from person to person.
