Hello everyone, today we will continue to share the book "The Beauty of the System". Next, I will use several issues to share the 15 survival rules of the system. First, let’s take a look at what these 15 survival rules are:
The first is to keep up with the rhythm of the system;
The second is to show your mind mode in the sun;
The third is to believe, respect and share information;
The fourth is to use the language carefully and enrich the language with the concept of the system;
The fifth is to focus on what is important, not just easy to measure;
The sixth is to formulate policies with feedback functions for the feedback system ;
The seventh is to pursue overall interests;
The eighth is to listen to the wisdom of the system; the ninth is to define the responsibilities of the system;
The tenth is to maintain humility and be a learner;
The eleventh is to celebrate complexity;
The twelfth is to expand the range of time;
The thirteenth is to break various rules and regulations;
The fourteenth is to expand the scope of concern;
The last is to not lower the standard of "goodness". The survival and development of these 15 systems can also be said to be the wisdom of life given to us by the author Meadows, who tells us how to get along with the world and others. Today we share the first two: keeping up with the rhythm of the system and showing your own mental model in the sun. I use two keywords to summarize: integration and openness.
The author says that before you want to intervene in any way, you must first observe how it works. This is actually very important. We often say that without investigation, there is no right to speak. There was a story in Huawei before. After an intern at Huawei for a period of time, he wrote a long letter to Ren Zhengfei , which listed many internal problems in Huawei and also gave solutions. Ren Zhengfei replied that this person would either ask him to see a doctor or be fired directly. Many people may not understand. Isn’t it good to say that a newcomer gives advice to the company?
But like we start, before you want to intervene in any way, first observe how it works. Huawei is a huge organization or system. Of course, it is impossible to understand clearly in a short period of time. It is of course easy to make suggestions, but this is not a pragmatic attitude. To give a less appropriate example, just like many keyboard warriors on the Internet, they just see some information without understanding the actual situation, and take it out of context and spray it out of words. Before showing your insights and sharp words, you can spend more time understanding the real situation so that you can keep up with the rhythm of the system. How to keep up with the rhythm of the system? The author said that this principle seems simple, but it is actually difficult. Here are two methods: the first is to focus on facts, not various theories. The second is to focus on dynamic processes, rather than static data. For example, a newcomer just arrived at a company and happened to have a colleague who was particularly complaining about the shortcomings and shortcomings of the company all day long. At this time, the newcomer is easily misled by other people's experience, and it is likely that he has prejudiced experience. Therefore, to integrate into and understand a system, you need to observe the real situation, rather than others' explanations of the situation, including various rumors and gossip.
Then, we should not be misled by various static data, theories and reports, because these are just results. What we should pay more attention to is the process of forming results. As the thinker Xunzi said: It is better to discuss the mind than to discuss the mind, and it is better to choose the method than to discuss the mind. The body cannot defeat the heart, and the heart cannot defeat the art. It is better to examine a person's thoughts and to examine his thoughts than to identify his way of dealing with people. Simply put, it is better to see how he does it than to see what he is. Data and conclusions are often static, and static data often erase a lot of accidents and randomness, and even the result after being beautified, and the process of things can better reflect the true behavior pattern of a system.
For example, if a newcomer wants to know a company, you can see how the company holds meetings, discusses problems, and makes decisions.In short, only by observing and feeling these real behavioral processes can we better understand a company.
OK, this is the first system survival rule we want to introduce: follow the rhythm of the system.
Next, let’s look at the second one: Show your mental model in the sun. What does this mean? In fact, it means showing what you think. You can display your thinking model of things through language, icons, mind map , system structure diagram, etc., so as to facilitate your own review and analysis, and even self-criticism. This is an open mind. But it is also an important method to analyze problems, but many people ignore it. Let me give you an example. Many of us read a book and feel that we have learned some knowledge, but when you ask you to sort out the contents in the book, write them into manuscripts, and make a mind map, you will find that this is very difficult.
There is a key point here that the various information, knowledge and concepts in our brain are scattered structures, and the connection between concepts and concepts can be perceived by consciousness, but they are three-dimensional structures, but logical linear structures. When you need to express it in language, words or mind maps, the three-dimensional structure in your brain needs to be expressed in a linear way. Language can only be said by word, and so is text. You will find that things that felt logical in your brain before were actually contradictory after being expressed.
I have helped some publishing houses to write bestsellers before. You feel a little rewarding after reading a book, but in fact, most of the knowledge does not form a logically ordered structure. Several concepts of scattered knowledge wander in the brain. Only when you write an article, say it, or even tell others, will you realize that you do not really understand the content of the book. As Feynman's learning method says, the best way to learn is to teach and learn. When you can teach others knowledge, it means that you can put the thinking model in your brain in the sun and explain it clearly to others. Only in this way, you really understand the content.
This is true when we think about anything. It is okay to show what is in your brain with language, icons or mind maps. Only when you show it, the logical structure and premise assumptions of each element of the system will be put on the table, so that we can examine and analyze its rationality and correctness. This is a simple method, but it is indeed a very important method for us to think about and analyze problems.
OK. Today we introduce the first and second of system survival and development: keep up with the rhythm of the system and put your mental model in the sun. To change a system, we must first observe, understand and integrate into a system. To change a system, we also need to show our thinking model of the system. It seems that these are common sense content, but they are very important.
OK, this is what today's content is, I hope it will inspire you. If you like my article, please like and bookmark it and continue to follow me. See you in the next article.
