This rotationally symmetric plastic-rubber composite component is made without the use of adhesives in an automated process from VESTAMID® DX9325 PA612 and EPDM

Wherever the rubber component must be permanently fixed or installed, it is made from hard Both components and composite parts made of elastomers have proven their worth.

For the purpose of weight reduction, the metals traditionally used to manufacture hard components have recently been replaced by suitable plastics, thus providing two more significant advantages:

● Non-corrosive;

● During the injection molding process , can effectively form complex molded parts, thus giving designers significantly greater flexibility when designing complex parts.

However, as a decisive criterion for the long-term functionality of composite components, especially for achieving dynamic stress targets, the bonding between hard and soft components is usually achieved in an additional processing step by applying adhesives.

Protective measures are often required to prevent the emissions of the solvents used, and these solvents must also be disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.

That is why LWB Steinl GmbH Co. KG (hereinafter referred to as "LWB Steinl"), Altdorf and Evonik Industrial Group are combining their experience to create a rotationally symmetrical plastic-rubber composite part.

For this purpose, Evonik offered its VESTAMID® DX9325 PA612, which bonds to EPDM without adhesives, and LWB Steinl offered its experience in two-component injection molding.

Evonik has developed a wide range of adhesive-free plastic compounds. Parts made from these compounds form a tight and permanent bond with suitable rubber compounds, thus eliminating the need for pre-treatment. Or apply adhesive.

VESTAMID® DX9325 is an approximately 40% glass fiber reinforced PA612 compound specially developed for plastic-rubber compounding technology. It can also be obtained using EPDM to obtain vulcanized .

As a semi-crystalline material, VESTAMID® DX9325 has excellent chemical resistance, such as resistance to fuels and greases.

Composite parts using EPDM can be produced in a single, automated process, similar to two-component injection molding in a single mold. By eliminating the need to process multiple components,

eliminates most sources of errors and reduces scrap rates. As a result, cost savings of up to 30% can be achieved depending on plant specifics.

On July 2, 2018, at the German Rubber Conference (referred to as "DKT 2018"), LWB Steinl will demonstrate this automated production process at its booth 12-309.

At Evonik’s booth 12-107 you can also find out more about this patented plastic-to-rubber bonding process, including the PA612, PPA and PPE molding compounds developed specifically for this process, as well as These compounds bond SBR, NR/SBR, NBR/SBR, NBR, XNBR, HNBR, AEM and FPM without the use of adhesives.
