Lazikou is located in southern Gansu. Lazikou is a transliteration in Tibetan, meaning "the dangerous mountain road gorge". As its name suggests, the mountains around Lazikou are towering, the gorge is like a knife and axe being cut. The Lazikou River rushes out from the gorge, and the two cliffs are densely covered with narrow roads. The only small path is steep and narrow, and is sandwiched by thick stone walls on both sides, just like a long corridor. It can be said to be a dangerous place where "one man is at the pass, tens of thousands of men cannot open".
In September 1935, Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army continued to fight against Japan, Long March passed through Lazikou. The newly formed 14th Division of the Kuomintang Lu Dachang Division wanted to block the Red Army from , , and go north with natural danger. The mountain is full of enemy bunkers, which stockpiled a large amount of weapons and ammunition, and there are 4 machine guns, , which is specifically blocked.
The vanguard of attacking Lazikou was the Red 4th Regiment, the regiment commander Wang Kaixiang, and the political commissar Yang Chengwu. Although they launched several attacks, they were all blocked by the enemy's firepower and there was no way to continue moving forward. The Red 4th Regiment also wanted to go around the side, but there were towering cliffs around it, which were difficult to climb.
But that was the only way the Red Army could advance, because the enemy was also chasing him in the rear. If Lazikou was not captured in time, the Red Army would inevitably fall into a desperate situation. Yang Chengwu then convened a soldier meeting to brainstorm. At this time, a soldier who had been enlisted for less than half a year said that he could climb up. This soldier, nicknamed "Yun, Guizhou, Sichuan", is a compatriot of the Miao people in Guizhou. He has been collecting herbs and chopping wood from a cliff since he was a child. When he wanted to climb the cliff, he would hook the roots, stone mouths and cliffs on the cliff with a hook tied to a long bamboo pole, and then climb up the bamboo pole.
Hong 4th Regiment was divided into two groups. One was commanded by political commissar Yang Chengwu to continue to launch a frontal attack to attract the enemy's firepower; the other was led by regiment commander Wang Kaixiang, who first climbed up the cliff by "Yun Guizhou and Sichuan", wrapped the leggings that had been picked up in advance on the tree trunk and put them down. Later, the soldiers pulled the leggings and climbed up one by one, climbing up the back slope of the cliff on the right bank of the enemy.
After Wang Kaixiang led the two companies to climb the cliff, he walked around the enemy's back. The Red Army soldiers who were like divine weapons suddenly launched an attack, destroying all the enemy's heavy machine guns , and then took advantage of the situation to attack and wipe out the enemy in one fell swoop. At dawn, the 4th Red Regiment occupied Lazikou, opening a path for the Shaanxi-Gansu Detachment of the Red Army to head north. Therefore, the feat of this battle and the natural danger Lazikou were recorded in the history of the Chinese revolution.
