On October 10, 1911, the Revolution of 1911 broke out. Bai Chongxi actively responded to the call for the revolutionary cause and joined the revolutionary death squads of local students in Guangxi. He followed the troops to go to Hankou to confront the northern warlords. In January 1912, the Nanjing Provisional Government was established, and Bai Chongxi subsequently went to Wuchang University to continue studying military courses.

After graduating from school, Bai Chongxi joined the troubled times where the Beiyang warlords were divided everywhere. He started as an officer and gradually grew from commanding battles to intervening in political and business activities between regions. In 1932, he established the new Guilin faction in Guilin and became a warlord.

In 1937, after the July 7th Incident, all major warlords in the country called Chiang Kai-shek and expressed their willingness to support the anti-Japanese struggle. On July 26, Chiang Kai-shek invited Bai Chongxi to come to Nanjing from Guilin to discuss the anti-Japanese cause. In August, Bai Chongxi arrived in Nanjing. After analyzing the military strength of China and Japan, he put forward a targeted plan to fight the Japanese army.

In March 1938, Chiang Kai-shek sent Bai Chongxi to assist Li Zongren in Xuzhou to command the Taierzhuang battle. Later, his anti-Japanese policies such as " exchanging space for time" were adopted by Chiang Kai-shek, making great contributions to the victory of the Anti-Japanese War.

After the end of the Anti-Japanese War, Chiang Kai-shek intended to let various warlords fight against each other so that he could reap the benefits. However, Bai Chongxi, Li Zongren and others had long known what Chiang Kai-shek was thinking, so they resolved their misunderstanding and fought against Chiang Kai-shek together.

During the War of Liberation, due to personal grudges with Chiang Kai-shek, he stood still when the Chinese army was defeated in the Battle of Huaihai , which made Chiang Kai-shek cursed in anger. When the Kuomintang and the Communist Party were confronting each other across the Yangtze River, Bai Chongxi even asked Chiang Kai-shek to step down in order to maintain the Kuomintang's rule south of the Yangtze River. Xinhua News Agency denounced Bai Chongxi as a war criminal who committed the heinous crime of splitting the country. The People's Liberation Army then crossed the Yangtze River and eliminated the Kuomintang's rule on the mainland.
