People have been iodized for 25 years, and there are many thyroid diseases. Do we still need iodized salt? Listen to the doctor

"Doctor, I have been taking Youjiale for a year, when can I stop the medication?"

Mr. Zhou had thyroid cancer last year. After some treatment, his body gradually improved. Now, Mr. Zhou felt that his body was the same as before, and wanted to stop the medication, but the doctor said that he would “take the medication for life”, which puzzled Mr. Zhou.

Thyroid cancer is called the kindest cancer, and the survival rate for 20 years after surgery is 90%.

Thyroid cancer can be said to be the kindest cancer, because most thyroid cancer is a kind of Lazy cancer". It does not develop rapidly and spread everywhere like other cancers, its malignant degree is quite low, and its development is almost fast, so the prognosis of patients after surgery is also quite good.

Usually the cancer survival rate is calculated in units of 5 years, and 5 years is too short for thyroid cancer, so some statistics simply use 20 years of survival to calculate. The clinical data of show that 80~90% of thyroid patients can survive the 20-year survival period , and the recurrence rate is less than 3%. Even these 3% of relapsed patients can still achieve long-term survival through surgery or continued treatment with iodine 131.

After 25 years of universal iodization, will China still need iodized salt?

In 1994, the "Regulations on the Management of Iodization of Table Salt to Eliminate the Harm of Iodine Deficiency" was promulgated, and the nationwide universal iodization of table salt officially kicked off. The ultimate goal of iodization is to eliminate iodine deficiency. Who knows, the iodized salt we eat every day is criticized.

A research article stated that from 2003 to 2011, the incidence of thyroid cancer in my country increased sharply at an average annual rate of 20.1%. Some people therefore question whether the policy of edible iodized salt that has been implemented over the years has caused the excessive intake of iodine among Chinese residents, leading to frequent thyroid diseases.

In this regard, Deputy Chief Physician Yu Wenbin of Head and Neck Surgery, Peking University Cancer Hospital, said that there is no direct medical evidence to prove that excessive iodine intake is definitely related to the incidence of thyroid cancer. And from an epidemiological point of view, the iodine content in our daily intake of food is too low to induce thyroid cancer.

Another objection was raised that iodized salt would induce thyroid nodules.

In order to study this issue, a research team led by Shan Zhongyan, chief physician of the Endocrinology Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of China Medical University, conducted experiments on thyroid nodules and iodine, and found that whether it is male or female, With the increase of iodine nutrition, the prevalence of thyroid nodules is decreasing.

Regarding this, Shan Zhongyan said that according to the current research, adequate iodine causes much less damage to the body than iodine deficiency. There is nothing to prevent thyroid cancer by not eating iodized salt. According to what you can tell.

Even so, many skeptical voices believe that residents in coastal areas often consume seafood and their iodine intake is sufficient, and there is no need to consume iodized salt.

In fact, the iodine nutritional status survey released in 2010 showed that among the residents of coastal areas such as Liaoning, Shanghai, Zhejiang, and Fujian, except for children aged 8 to 10, only 11.1% of those with excessive iodine intake~ 14.2%, far smaller than the proportion of people with insufficient iodine intake (23.5%~29%).

Another set of data from the Bureau of Disease Control and Prevention can also prove this point. The data shows that even for residents of coastal areas, , 84.2% of the iodine in their diet comes from iodized salt, and only 13.1% of iodine intake from food.

Therefore, if residents in coastal areas consume iodized salt, more than 97% of residents will face the risk of iodine deficiency.

So most people need iodine supplementation. There are only two exceptions: First, people suffering from hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis or autoimmune thyroid disease , for treatment Need to follow the doctor’s advice to reduce or even avoid eating iodized salt; The second is for residents living in high-iodine areas or non-iodine-deficient areas.
