China Youth Comments

does not allow learning to become a kind of exquisite "computation".

Recently, a colleague invited me to participate in a class meeting, targeting me as a sophomore. The reason is that many students feel confused and helpless, and hope that I will chat with them and have a heart.

I first reviewed my college days. It was 1997, and I just left my hometown and entered the provincial capital to study for university. At that time, my classmates and I wanted to enjoy the good time in college and make up for the three years of high school. In spare time, everyone often goes shopping and plays basketball together, and often visits projectors outside the school. When I was in junior and senior year, I was relatively nervous. In order to prepare for the graduate entrance examination, I would go to the woods or by the lake to recite English words in the morning, but on weekends and weekdays, everyone still talked and laughed as usual. After graduation, 12 of our 42 people successfully passed the postgraduate entrance examination, and 30 people found jobs that they liked or were relatively satisfactory.

For my opening remarks, the students in the audience expressed their opinions. "Teacher, the times have changed long ago." "Teacher, have you heard the word "high school senior"?"... After asking, I realized that "high school senior" was used to express their busy learning state and nervous mental state in their senior year.

"What are you busy with except in class?" I threw out this topic. Everyone rushed to respond: "We need to participate in various competitions." "Before 8 am, we have to go to the classroom for early reading. There are three nights a week to go to the designated classroom for two hours of evening self-study."... I further learned that for early and late courses, because some people are responsible for taking the attendance, they have to go, but it does not prevent students from playing with their mobile phones and sleeping in the classroom; for some lectures, some people are responsible for naming: they are named at the beginning, in the middle, and at the end. Some students lamented: "I am very busy every day, but I don't know how meaningful the things I'm busy with are."

Many of the above contents are linked to Grade Point ( average credit score ). Grade Point is the general baton and is directly related to the various interests of students. Under the goal orientation of the grade point, many students have a pre-oriented thinking: "This matter is linked to the grade point, and I must participate", "Will this matter improve my grade point?" "Although this matter is very meaningful and I am more interested in it, it has little effect on improving the grade point, so don't spend time." For elective courses, many students start their "snatch classes" by "need to get credits for this module" rather than "very interested in this course". As a result, students who get classes play with their mobile phones or are busy with other things in class, while some really interested students cannot choose classes, resulting in waste of resources and mismatch.

is a quantitative expression for measuring learning ability. Grade points are of course scientific, but in addition to the current grade point calculation system, there are other contents that can be quantified but not included, as well as those that are difficult to quantify but are very valuable. For example, they are keen on hometown construction and community services, and are concerned about the elderly and left-behind children on weekdays. These behaviors are also important aspects of evaluating students' growth, even if they are not linked to grade points. When grade points become the only pursuit, the function of grade points to measure academic level will be alienated.

If students only measure their studies based on quantitative methods and students spare no effort to achieve their ideal grade points, their learning may become a kind of sophisticated "calculation" - if they can see the immediate benefits and are easy to improve grade points, they will invest more energy, and if they cannot see the benefits or "make half the result with twice the effort", they will not spend time or give up directly. In this process, the sense of meaning of college life may also be dissolved unconsciously. For schools, we must optimize the "goal point first" evaluation system and implement diversified and diversity evaluation methods, so as to truly improve students' professional qualities and practical abilities. For students, grade points are far from the full meaning of college life.
