
Shi Huizhong (675~775), , a great Zen master of the Tang Dynasty, was a national teacher of the two dynasties. The layman's name is Ran Huyin, and the Dharma name is Shi Huizhong. He is known as Nanyang Huizhong National Master. He is posthumously named Zen Master Dazheng. He is from Zhuji, Yuezhou (the rule is now Zhuji, Zhejiang). Zen Master Huizhong is well-versed in the scriptures and has received the Dharma. He learned Zen from the Sixth Patriarch Huineng. He is known as the five major craftsmen of the Sixth Patriarch, together with the four people including Xingsi, Huairang, Shenhui, and Xuanjue . He jointly promoted the Zen style of the Sixth Patriarch in the north with the Heze Shenhui. He was treated well by the three emperors of the Tang Dynasty, the Emperor Xuanzong of Tang, , Emperor Suzong of Tang and Emperor Daizong of Tang, and was granted the title of national teacher and was often respected as the National Master Huizhong.
According to records, Zen Master Huizhong was very wonderful when he was young. He didn't talk to anyone and never stepped on a step across the bridge in front of his house. When he was sixteen years old, a Zen master came to his family and he worshiped the Zen master. When his parents and relatives and friends saw this, they were surprised by his behavior and felt that this child was different from ordinary people.
From the monk, the young Zen Master Huizhong heard that Master Sixth Patriarch was preaching the Dharma in Caoxi . Although he didn't know how to go to Lingnan, he resolutely rushed to Caoxi to worship the Sixth Patriarch.

When I first met Master Sixth Patriarch, the master asked him, "Where are you from?" He replied, "I am only close." The master asked again, "Where is your fate?" The master replied, "I can't remember it after I received the five aggregates of ."
Zen Master Huizhong is quick and studious, and has complete good roots. After he became a monk, he inherited the Dharma Seal of Heart. During the eleven years of visiting Master Huineng, in the seventh year of the Sisheng period of Zhongzong (690 AD), he entered Dangzigu, Baiya Mountain, Nanyang (now Xiangyan Temple, . He has lived here for a long time, lived in Nanyang for more than 40 years and worked hard without leaving the mountain. The world's scholars have arrived, with more than a thousand people.
During the Kaiyuan period, the founding Duke of the Pre-Governor Wang Ju, Sima Taichang Shaoqing Zhao Yizhen and others respected him very much and submitted a memorial to Emperor Xuanzong, and Emperor Xuanzong then issued an edict to live in the Longxing Temple. Since then, all princes and ministers worshiped and bowed, followed him and asked him. No one can compare with wisdom and philology, widely practice scriptures and laws, and spread the Dharma and surrender things. Soon after, the teacher encountered the Anshi Rebellion, and the master disappeared. When Emperor Suzong was in power, in the second year of Shangyuan (761), he summoned his troops to the capital and met with the teacher's courtesy. He ordered his residence in the West Zen Temple of Qianfu Temple. The officials, ministers, scholars and common people all bowed and sought the Dharma.
He explained to the emperor that "the key to governing people and governing the country is to be smooth about the style of Tang Yao Yu Shun ", and was recognized by Emperor Suzong and was treated as a national teacher. He ordered the court to establish Taiyi Yanchang Temple in Wudang Mountain, and also to establish Changshou Temple in Dangzigu, Baiya Mountain, and a Tripitaka each.

He then submitted a report to the emperor for the establishment of Taiyi Yanchang Temple in Wudang, and Xiangyan Changshou Temple in Dangzigu, Baiya Mountain. In the eighth year of Dali (773 AD), he also reported to the famous monks in the world who were proficient in scriptures, law, and Zen, and added 37 people. For a time, Buddhism flourished and the Chinese people benefited.

Once, Emperor Suzong of Tang asked Master Huizhong: "What method did the master get in Caoxi?"
National Master Huizhong replied: "Does Your Majesty still see the cloud in the sky?"

Huizhong said: "Navigate it with a nail and hang it with a rope. This is the method I got from Master Caoxi."
How can the floating clouds in the sky be nailed with a nail and hang it with a rope? The method of

After Daizong ascended the throne, he was even more courteous to Master Huizhong, so he moved to Guangzhai Temple. One day, Daizong summoned a man who called himself Taibaishan native, without knowing his real name and age.
Daizong told Master Huizhong: "This person considers himself a strange man of his generation and has great insights. Please ask the master for his test."
National Master Huizhong first looked at the Taibai Mountain people, and then asked, "Your Majesty said you are a strange man. What are your specialties?"
Taibai Mountain people said, "I know the mountains and the earth. I know astronomy and geography on , and I know essays and words. I am good at telling fortunes."
National Master Huizhong said, "I ask the mountain people: Is Taibai Mountain where you live a male mountain? Or a female mountain?"
Taibai Mountain people were at a loss.
National Master Huizhong pointed at the ground and asked, "What is this?"
Shanren said, "You can know it by counting it."
National Master Huizhong wrote the word "one" on the ground again, and asked, "What is this?"

Huizhong disagreed and corrected his words: "Add 'one' on the ground, it should be the word "king". Why is it the word "one"? Now, let me ask you again: How many 37 is?"
Shanren replied, " Three Seven is twenty-one, who doesn’t know? "
National Master Huizhong said: "Three and seven are combined to be ten, how can it be twenty-one?" "

Later, the bandits captured Nanyang and passed by Zen Master Huizhong's residence. The bandits broke in. Seeing that the master was sitting upright and his expression was calm, they picked up the blade and threatened him sternly. Zen Master Huizhong was unyielding and fearless, sitting quietly and looking unrestrained. The leader of the bandit saw that the Zen Master was calm and majestic, noble and elegant, and had a solemn moral atmosphere. He knew in his heart that this was a Taoist person, so he did not dare to force him to force him to force him. Instead, he threw his sword on the ground, Luo Bai apologized and asked his master to accept him as his disciple.
At that time, the bandits were wandering around and causing chaos. There were many people who wanted to escape from the thieves. However, no matter where they ran, there were rioters everywhere, so countless people died and died in the middle. After this chaos, Zen Master Huizhong said to everyone: "The bandits are constantly doing chaos, and things cannot be stopped. It is not advisable to live here for a long time." So he walked away along the river bank. Some people who heard the Zen master’s reminder but insisted on staying in the same place and not leaving soon were killed by the thieves; Zen Master Huizhong’s insight into the situation can further infer the vastness of his wisdom.
After Emperor Suzong ascended the throne, he ordered the envoy to invite Zen Master Huizhong to the capital in the second year of Shangyuan. The master was majestic and virtuous. The emperor was solemn and respected him at the sight and asked his master for the way of governing the country. The master talked about the style of Tang Yao and Yu Shun. Suzong was very attentive and suddenly became respectful and respectful, so he sat directly before the Zen master to listen to the Dharma. Afterwards, Suzong asked his master to be the abbot of Qianfu Temple, waiting for the teacher's etiquette, and specially granted Zen Master Huizhong to come on a sedan chair when he went to the hall; he sat with his master and listened to the Dharma, regardless of the etiquette of the king and his subjects.When a master comes to meet the emperor, the emperor often entrusts the national teacher to inspect it. The teacher is eloquent and quick and can often recognize people! When faced with emperors asking for Dharma or powerful ministers in the dynasty, the teacher did not lie in his words and answered questions according to the questions. People knew that the teacher was a person with wisdom, so they often came to ask for Dharma. Later, the Zen master recited the words of his predecessors and wise men: "If you want to attain enlightenment, you should live in Hengyue, Wudang and other mountains, and work hard together." So he asked Emperor Suzong to build Taiyi Yanchang Temple in Wudang Mountain and Xiangyan Changshou Temple in Dangzigu, Baiya Mountain.

One day, Suzong specially fasted and bathed, asking the Zen master for Dharma: "Do you still have to give alms and cultivate blessings after seeing the nature?" The master replied: "If you give without form, you will be able to see the nature." He asked: "What industry can you do in accordance with this path?" He answered: "If you do nothing, you should be able to follow this path."
The emperor asked again: "If you are sick, how should you practice?" The master said: "If you are in a state of ill, you will not be able to practice." However, "How can you be free at the time of death?" He answered: "Worrying to be confident, and one mind will be free." As for "when troubles arise, how can you stop?" The master reminded: "The original mind is clear, but the heart to return to the wonderful use of troubles is."
The emperor asked again: "After seeing the nature, do you need to chant the Buddha's name to seek rebirth in the Pure Land?" The master said: "The self-nature is , true Buddha , and self-nature is the Pure Land." If "Where should you be born after giving up these five yin reward bodies?" Answer: "Not giving up or not being born is born freely." Also, "When you die, if a flower platform throne comes to welcome you, can you go there?" The master said: "Don't take appearances."
"How do you work hard to obtain supernatural powers and dependent retribution is as special and solemn as the Pure Land of the Buddha's Kingdom?" The master taught: "Understanding the mind and seeing the nature is like a poor person who has treasures and the common people become kings." He asked: "As long as you practice according to the principles of the original mind and nature, you will definitely become a Buddha?" The master replied: "You will definitely become a Buddha! The Buddha is also formless and unobtained, and this is the real gain!" Since then, Su Zong has devoted himself to the principles of the mind and nature.

One day, a big ear Sanzang came to the capital in the west and claimed that he had gained the understanding of his heart. Emperor Daizong asked the national teacher to check the reality and reality. When Da'er Sanzang saw the national master, he worshipped and stood on the right. The national master asked him, "Do you have his understanding of his heart?" Sanzang said politely, "I dare not." The national master asked again, "Tell me, where is the old monk now?" Sanzang replied, "The monk is a teacher of a country, how could he run to Xichuan to watch the boating and ferry?" After a while, the national master asked again, "Where is the old monk now?" "The monk is a teacher of a country, how could he run to Tianjin Bridge to watch monkey plays?" After a long time, the national master asked again, "What's the current?" Da'er Sanzang was unpredictable and could not answer it after a long time. So the national master shouted, "Where is this wild fox spirit, his understanding of his heart!" Da'er Sanzang was silent and speechless.
Daizong, the eunuch Yu Chaoen held the military power in the world. The emperor treated him with favor and courtesy for his old grace, so he was arrogant. One day in the pavilion, Daizong pointed at Yu Chaoen and said to the national master, "Chaoen also understands Buddhism, so you can discuss the teachings with the teacher." Chaoen asked, "What is ignorance? Where does ignorance arise?" The master said, "The decline of Buddhism appears today." The emperor did not understand, "What does this mean?" The national master replied, "Isn't it that the decline of Buddhism appears today?" Yu Chaoen has always been arrogant and arrogant, and he couldn't help but be furious when he heard this. The national master looked at him and said, "This is ignorance! Ignorance arises from this place!"
For a moment, Yu Chaoen couldn't help but feel angry and asked again, "Some people say that the national master has become a Buddha. Is this really the case?" The master replied, "I also heard someone in the court saying, 'You are the emperor of the current dynasty.' Is this really the case?" When Yu Chaoen heard this, he quickly lay on the ground, kowtowed and apologized, saying that he was not the emperor. The master said calmly: "I am not a Buddha either, and the two honors will not be transformed together!" Yu Chaoen said to the Zen master, "Did the national master become an ordinary person for a long time? There is never a time to become a Buddha?" The master replied: "I will definitely become a Buddha in the future! What is your surname?" "Chaoen's surname is Yu." "When I became a Buddha, my name was not Huizhong.If you become the emperor in the future, should you change your surname or still have the surname Yu? "When Yu Chaoen heard this, he lay down on the ground, kept kowtowing and apologizing, and said, "Chaoen will never dare to debate Buddhism with the national master again in the future! ”

In the tenth year of Dali, Huizhong suddenly suffered from a disease and the national doctor was unable to treat it. He knew that he would not be able to live long. Everyone asked Huizhong to leave a will. He said, "The Buddha has the Ming Buddhism, and everyone can follow it. What do I need to say?" On December 9th of this year, his right flank was exhausted and he was walking for a long time. The government reported to the emperor that the emperor was very sad and sent a special envoy to express his grief. The gift was very generous. He also issued a posthumous title of "Zen Master Dazheng" and issued an edict to be buried in Dangzi Gu Xiangyan Temple. All expenses are expensed by the treasury. There were many monks participating in their funerals, and the sound of crying shook the sky and the earth. Daji, a monk from Xingtang Temple, learned from him very early. Although he was not his successor, his grief was even worse than that. His disciple, Kaifu Sun Zhigu, and his younger brother, Changshi Chaojin, his layman Jingchao brothers, monk disciples Zhicheng, Guangzhai Temple Zhide, and Xiangyan Temple Taomi were all very sad. The monk Feixi translated the scriptures and wrote an inscription for him to commemorate him.
