, Xu Huineng, whose common surname is Lu, was from Xinxing, Nanhai (now east of Xinxing County, Guangdong Province). My family was in . His father Xingjiang was demoted to Lingnan (now Xinxing County, Guangdong) and finally came to the place. Huineng was born in the 12th year of Zhenguan (638 AD). Although he was in a wilderness, he was pure and extremely intelligent. His father passed away at a very young age. He had only one old mother in the family, and had no property and was empty at home. Huineng had to rely on chopping wood and selling wages to make a living and adoptive mother.
Once, I accidentally heard someone reading " Diamond Sutra " in the market. Huineng stopped when he heard it, and was reluctant to leave for a long time. Then he asked the reader, "Where did you learn this sutra?" The man said, "I learned it from Feng Maoshan, Huangmei, Qizhou. There was a Zen Master Hongren who practiced this method diligently and said that if he could master this method, he could see the nature and become a Buddha." As soon as Huineng heard this situation, he was like the nectar of a long drought, which was like the thirsty man's desire to be cold. He hurried back home and settled his old mother, and embarked on the road to seeking the Dharma.
During the Xianheng period, I arrived in Shaoyang and met Liu Zhiluo from the same village. Liu Zhiluo had an aunt named Wu Quanzang who often reads " Nirvana Sutra ". One day, Huineng heard Wu Quanzang reading the Nirvana Sutra again, and then explained the meaning of the sutra for her. The Endless Cang knew that Huineng was not literate, but when he heard him explaining the truth, he felt very strange. Unexpectedly, Huineng said to her, "The theories of all Buddhas do not relate to words. If you take words, it is not the Buddha's will." Endless Cang was deeply impressed and called him a practitioner. Someone advised him to go to Baolin Ancient Temple to practice Taoism, and Huineng secretly said to himself, "I originally came out to seek a master. If I change my original intention now, I live in the temple to practice Taoism, is it like a person who has just left the house and went home after walking a few steps." Later, he went to the West Grotto of Lechang to learn Zen from Zen Master Zhiyuan. After several contacts, Zen Master Zhiyuan found that Huineng was not an ordinary person, so he advised him to go to Hongren's place in Dongshan, Huangmei, Qizhou to study.
After arriving at Huangmei Dongshan, I went to see Hongren . When Hongren saw that Huineng was not good-looking, he asked him tentatively, "Where did you come from?" Huineng said, "I came from Xinzhou, Lingnan, and came here to learn to be a Buddha from Master." Hongren said, "The people in Lingnan do not have Buddha nature, where can they become Buddhas?" Huineng responded casually, "There are differences between north and south, but Buddha nature does not have differences between north and south." Hongren asked again, "What kind of merit do you want to do?" Huineng said, "I only wish to carry stones and pound rice to the public." So Hongren sent him to the mortar room to work as a trait. Huineng became a monk in poverty and was able to endure hardships in the mill room, and he was striving to do all kinds of miscellaneous work. Know that life and death are equal to Nirvana.
One day, Hongren asked the disciples in the temple to write a verse to see their knowledge and practice. Shenxiu first wrote a verse and wrote it on the wall. After everyone saw it, they were very impressed, but Huineng did not agree. Later, he also wrote a verse, which was highly appreciated by Hongren, so he passed on robes to him and told him: "Those who have inherited the robes and mantle in the past dynasties are like silk. He asked him to leave the place quickly and live in seclusion in the south first, and wait for the time to be ripe before coming out to preach the Dharma." Huineng then left Huangmei East Mountain in the middle of the night and went to the south.
After Huineng returned to his hometown, he hid in the area of Sihui and Huaiji . Later, seeing that the time was ripe, I started to go out for activities. First go to Faxing Temple in the South China Sea. That day, Master Yin Zong started to preach the Nirvana Sutra. Everyone gathered. At that time, several monks were talking about a picture that was fluttering with the wind. Some said it was the wind moving, and some said it was the banner moving. Huineng interrupted and said, "It was neither the wind nor the banner moving, it was your heart moving." The listeners were shocked and deeply admired. When Yin Zong heard the news, he shaved his hair and then took the full precepts from lawyer Zhiguang. He was listed as the altar of precepts when he received the precepts. It was established by the Tripitaka of the Southern Song Dynasty. Varmo had ascended the fruit of the throne. He had predicted, "In the future, the bodhisattva will receive precepts on this altar." In addition, the Tripitaka of the Truth of the Late Liang Dynasty also planted the bodhi tree next to this altar, and said to his disciples, "One hundred and twenty years later, great Bodhisattvas had said the supreme level in this, saving countless people."When Huineng arrived, it was true that the Great Hongdong Mountain Dharma here was in response to the previous prophecy.
During the first year of the year, just when Dahong Zen was promoted, he suddenly felt displeased. The disciples asked him, "Why did the Zen master suddenly feel strange?" Huineng replied, "Birth and death are impermanent, and the flow is endless. My master is now in destruction." Sure enough, bad news came soon. Soon after, he moved to Baolin Temple. At that time, the governor Wei Ju asked him to go to Dafan Temple. He refused to refuse, and even the Shuangfeng Caoxi, Dadao Zen, and the scholars from all directions surrendered, and followed them with many scholars. As for the world's words, the Zen Taoism , the Zen Taoism , the words were used as a deed. Even the emperors of the dynasty, such as Empress Wu and Emperor Xiaohe, personally issued an edict asking him to enter the dynasty to preach. This was recommended by Zen Master Shenxiu, but Huineng repeatedly claimed to be sick and politely declined. The emperor then gave a Mona cassock, a bowl, and many silk silk as a gift. He also deposited the new and old house as Guoen Temple . In the third year of Shenlong (707 AD), the emperor issued an imperial edict to build the Buddhist temple and the abbot of the temple where Huineng lived, and gave the plaque "Faquan". In July of the first year of Yanhe (712 AD), his disciples were ordered to build a Futu Institute at Guoen Temple and urged them to be completed as soon as possible. He was diagnosed on August 3rd of the second year of Xiantian (713 AD). At that time, the room was filled with strange fragrance. After eating, I bathed and changed my clothes. After a while, my breath was slightly closed and my eyes suddenly became silent. For a moment, the mountains collapsed and the earth broke, the rivers dried up, the birds sang and the apes slapped, and the four groups were mourning. A generation of masters passed away and lived a lifetime of 76 years. In November of that year, he moved to Caoxi.
