Huineng Master, I believe many people have heard of it. He is a great monk and master of the Tang Dynasty Zen Buddhism and the sixth generation of Zen Buddhism. He lost his father at the age of three and was from a poor family. He had no chance to study and could not read. But by listening to people reading and reciting scriptures, he can understand the meaning and principles, which not only leads to understanding, but also to realise them. Below is a summary of his ten famous quotes and share them with you:
1. If you want to practice, you can also get it at home. You can’t help but go to the temple
Brief analysis: If you want to learn Buddhism, it does not mean that you must go to the temple, nor do you have to shave your hair and become a monk. It’s the same for practicing at home.
2. You can do it at home, just like the people in the East; if you don’t practice in temples, just like the people in the West, just like the people in the West, just like the people in the West, just like the people in the West, and be kind-hearted, even if you are in the East, you can still understand your mind and see your nature and gain liberation. Even if you are in a temple, if you cannot follow the teachings and practice according to the Dharma, it is like being in a pure Western world, but your heart is dirty and you still cannot obtain liberation from life and death.
3. But the mind is pure, that is, the self-nature, the West
Brief analysis: The core of practice is to cultivate the mind. As long as the mind is pure, without any attachment, and remains unmoved, it is equivalent to restoring one's nature, just like being in a pure world in the West.
4. Why keep the precepts in peace of mind? Why do you need to practice meditation by practicing straight mind
Brief analysis: If you can achieve a pure mind, a normal mind, an equal mind, and an untainted mind, then you don’t need to deliberately stick to keeping the precepts; if you can stay in your own nature every thought and remain unmoved, then you don’t need to practice meditation. Keeping precepts and practicing meditation are both means of practice. Once you truly understand the mind and nature, you can let go.
5. If you can drill wood to make fire, the mud will grow red lotus
Brief analysis: Nothing can be achieved overnight. On the road of practice, if you can carry forward the spirit of drilling wood to make fire, persevere, and keep yourself clean, even if you are in the mud, you can grow red lotus.
6. Daily use is always beneficial, and enlightenment is not achieved by giving money
Brief analysis: Practice cannot be separated from life. In daily life, always maintain clear mindfulness, keep all words and actions, keep your own benefit and others, diligently practice the three studies of precepts, concentration and wisdom, and implement Buddhism in real life. This is practice. It is impossible to achieve enlightenment by just practicing donations and donating some money to the temple.
7. Be kind to your parents, and be kind to your parents, and be kind to you, and be kind to you, comrades from both sides
Brief analysis: The best way to repay the Buddha's kindness is to be filial to your parents; the most important quality that should be possessed in dealing with people is to respect the elderly and love the young, respect the elderly, elders, and love children and younger generations.
8. Let the superiors and inferiors be harmonious, and tolerate the evils are not rumored.
Brief analysis: If you can develop the habits and virtues of humility, a family can live in harmony with each other. If everyone can tolerate it and no longer be impetuous or impulsive, they can resolve all disputes and there will be no more conflicts and struggles in the world.
9. The bitter taste is good medicine, and the unpleasant ear must be honest
Brief analysis: Those decoctions that taste bitter are good medicines to treat our diseases; those disagreements that sound very unpleasant are honest advice that are beneficial to us, and you must accept them humbly.
10. Bodhi only seeks the heart, why do you need to seek the mystery outside?
Brief analysis: Buddhism is the inner heart, the study of the mind, the great way of Bodhi, not seeking outward, but to realize it from our hearts and realize it. Laozi said: "To learn more and more, is the way to lose " and practice is subtraction, not addition. Only by eliminating the delusions, discriminations, and attachments that hinder the nature of one's nature can we show the Bodhi self-nature that we originally possess.
