The Book of the Pure Land Sage Volume 2 [The Third One of the Rebirths of the Monks]
Eastern Jin Huiyuan (the first ancestor of the Lotus Sect), Huiji
Huiyuan. His common surname is Jia, a native of Yanmen Loufan (now Dai County, Shanxi). He was eager to study when he was young, and he learned a wide range of knowledge and understood the Six Classics. He was especially good at Zhuangzi and Laozi. At that time, Master Daoan established a temple in Hengshan Mountain in Taihang, and Huiyuan went to take refuge. When I heard Master Daoan talk about the "Prajna Sutra", I suddenly realized that I was enlightened, so I shave my hair and became a monk and followed him to study under Master Daoan's seat. Huiyuan is usually diligent in thinking and reciting scriptures, and is diligent in the night and night. Daoan praised, "Those who make Buddhism spread to China in the East should be in Huiyuan!" In the sixth year of Taiyuan (381 AD), Huiyuan passed by Xunyang and saw that Mount Lu was vast and empty, and could live in peace, so he established a monastery in the local area, called Longquan Temple.
At that time, Master Huiyong, the senior brother of Huiyuan, had already lived in the west forest of Lushan Mountain and wanted to invite Huiyuan to live together. However, Huiyuan's fellow disciples and disciples gradually became more and more numerous, and Xilin was too narrow to accommodate. The governor Huan Yi built a temple for Huiyuan on the east side of Lushan, so it was called "Donglin". Huiyuan led the public to practice Buddhism and dig pools to plant lotus flowers. The twelve-leaf lotus flowers on the pool are the timing leaks, which rotate according to the fluctuations of the water flow, and are respectively engraved with the day and night periods as the period of practice. Since then, there have been 123 scholars with pure faith in all directions who have heard of Huiyuan's noble virtues coming to support him. Huiyuan said, "A gentleman came here to practice. Can you not intend to rebirth in the Pure Land?" Therefore, he respectfully created the image of the Three Saints of the West, built houses and gathered lotus clubs, and asked Liu Lie to make a vow and carve it on stones.
At that time, Wang Qiaozhi and several others also wrote poems about chanting Buddha's name to express their intention to rebirth in the Pure Land. Huiyuan gave them a preface: "What is the so-called samadhi? That is to concentrate on one's mind and concisely. If your mind is focused, your mind will be consistent and not distracted; if your mind and concisely, your mind will be clear and empty, and your mind will be clear. If your mind and energy are clear, your wisdom will be enlightened and you can observe clearly. ; If you are clear and clear, you will not have any subtle and mysterious meanings and principles. Focusing on your mind and clear thoughts are the basis for the actual correspondence of the true nature. You can not only realize the realm of the true Dharma, but also initiate the wonderful use of saving sentient beings.
However, the samadhi taught by the Buddhas are of many kinds and names. If you seek to achieve high effectiveness and easily make progress, chanting Buddha is the first. Why? Because you can explore all the incredible and mysterious meanings and principles , Those who reach the most clear, quiet and incredible state will respectfully call him "Tathagata". Tathagata can not only realize the wonder of the essence, but also follow the changes of causes and conditions, and apply it in no way without a fixed law. Therefore, people who enter this samadhi of chanting Buddha will completely forget the discriminatory knowledge and views, and will appear in a mirror-like relationship with the external objects. Since the heart of all things is clear and clear, the inner purity and the outward light blend together, so all things will be shadowed with the pure consciousness This cannot be achieved by the cause and conditional methods such as ear roots and eye roots. However, the awareness of hearing and seeing is constantly wonderfully used. Therefore, the spiritual consciousness reveals a clear and pure appearance. In the pure and bright body form, the mysterious and original sound of Amitabha Buddha chanting the Buddha's mind corresponding to the pure and illuminated Tathagatagarbha mind. At this moment, all the worries and attachments suddenly melt, and the true nature of which is originally unborn and dead suddenly appears. If it is not the most mysterious and supreme convenient method in the world , How can you reach this state?
So Wang Qiaozhi and other wise men who follow the teachings can know that they should think about practicing this essential program that will take all Buddhist teachings. At the same time, they also realize that the short life of a short moment in life will be exhausted at any time, and they are afraid that the future resources for escaping life and death have not yet been accumulated. Therefore, they wash away the thoughts of discriminating and delusions and settle in the Dharma Hall, keep the whole bunch of conduct, cheer up the spirit, and recognize their future rebirth. At night, you will be diligent and forget to sleep. After getting up in the morning, you will be diligent and unremitting. Such a dedicated mind and tend toward ideal practice will inevitably correspond to the goal of the Three Vehicles of Liberation in Buddhism. He relied on Amitabha Buddha to lead him to transcend three great kalpas, and also used the advice and support of fellow practitioners to be reborn in the Pure Land together. Guide the cowardly and unfaithful sentient beings, and warn and encourage them to move forward and seek rebirth in the Pure Land. From this point of view, how can we say that it is just a poem and lyrics that express emotions by literati? ”
Huiyuan lacked many sutras in the Jiangdong area, so he sent his disciples to travel across the Pamir Mountains, and invited many Sanskrit scriptures, and introduced them to Guanzhong. Among all the sutras and laws at that time, there were almost hundreds of volumes of circulating from Mount Lu. Huiyuan once wrote the "Dharma Nature Treatise" to illustrate the principle of Nirvana and Eternal Residence. After seeing this, Master Kumarajiva praised: "I have not seen the Mahayana sutra in the border area, and it can secretly match the ultimate meaning of Buddhism. "Master Huiyuan lived in Mount Lu for 30 years, never entered the secular world, and devoted himself to practicing Pure Land. He concentrated on the Pure Land. He saw the Three Saints of the West three times, all of which were calm and heavy and did not speak to others.
The 12th year of Yixi of Emperor An of the Eastern Jin Dynasty (416 AD) At the night of the end of July, on the pagoda east of the Prajna Platform, Huiyuan came out of meditation from meditation and saw Amitabha Buddha. His vast body was filled with the void. In the pure round light, there were countless transformed Buddhas, and Guanyin Bodhisattva and Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva stood with their side and left and right. He also saw the water flowing light in the Pure Land, divided into fourteen branches, flowing up and down, and preaching the Dharma sounds of suffering, emptiness, impermanence, and selflessness. Amitabha Buddha told Huiyuan : "I will comfort you with the power of my original vows. In seven days, you will be born in our Pure Land. "I saw the Buddhas Yeshe, Huichi, Huiyong, Liu Yimin, etc. who were first born in the Lotus Society in the West, all beside Amitabha Buddha. They bowed to Huiyuan and asked, "The master made the first wish, why did he come so late! "Huiyuan told his disciples Fajing and Huibao, "I have seen the statues of the Three Saints of the West three times in eleven years. Today I see it again. It is determined that I will be reborn in the Pure Land! "So he made his own precepts. On August 6th, he sat down and died at the age of 83.
Huiji. He was the younger brother born to Duke Yuan and his mother. He served Master Daoan with Duke Yuan, studied all the scriptures and had noble virtues. During the Long'an period of Emperor An of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, he bid farewell to his brother Huiyuan and entered Sichuan to rebirth in the Pure Land together as his agreement. He lived in Longyuan Temple in Pi County, and spread the teachings of the Buddha. He passed away in the eighth year of Yixi (412 AD) of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, at the age of 76.
