Read a recent lecture by Academician Zhu Qingshi . Mr. Zhu talked about "Science and Buddhism Meet at the Top".

As we all know, Mr. Zhu was the president of University of Science and Technology of China and is a famous physicist in our country. Mr. Zhu doesn’t talk about Buddhism for a day or two, nor does he talk about it just recently, but for some years.

A few years ago, I saw Academician Zhu Qingshi preaching about Buddhism for the first time. I was very puzzled: How could an outstanding physicist preach about Buddhism? However, it makes sense to think that Newton and Einstein both entered theology in their later years. Extenuating circumstances don't mean I understand him. Later, after seeing him talk too much, I became curious and simply took a closer look. After watching it, I realized it again and slowly felt relieved.

Mr. Zhu’s latest speech, first of all, "We must inherit traditional culture, including Buddhism culture. The most important thing is to understand two things. The first thing is that science has its limits; the second is that traditional culture includes Buddhism has its own advantages, and these advantages cannot be replaced by science." That is to say, we start from the limitations of science. He said: "Now that science has developed to this extent, subjective and objective are inseparable. In the past, we artificially divided them into subjective and objective. It is difficult for scientific experiments to discover objective truth. This is The first limitation of science. "The second limitation of science is that the logical reasoning of science itself depends on the human brain." When

talked about Buddhism, Mr. Zhu said: "What I want to make clear is Buddhism. It’s not called Buddhism, because I study it as knowledge. Buddhism has its own unique features. It does not involve experiments or logical reasoning like science. Buddhism is just the opposite. Its method of obtaining truth is to improve people’s wisdom. "Mr. Zhu believes that science is understanding and approaching a core concept of Buddhism, which is alaya consciousness.

What is alaya consciousness? Alaya consciousness is the eighth consciousness in consciousness-only theory. Consciousness is Master Xuanzang’s translation. He really couldn’t find a better word. Master Xuanzhuang was not satisfied with the translation before. After becoming conscious, consciousness has become a very important word in our modern culture. Knowledge and understanding all evolved from here. Alaya consciousness is a special kind of consciousness. It contains all things, and is also called hidden consciousness . It is also called seed consciousness because it can contain the seeds for the growth of all things.

Beginning with the Buddha and the efforts of his later disciples, we have summarized a complete system that includes various mental observation methods such as psychology, physiology, philosophy, and logic, namely consciousness-only Dharma-physics.

Frankly speaking, I can understand and accept many of Mr. Zhu’s views on science and Buddhism. Because I have experience in meditation and meditation.

I think now, why do many Zen masters in history say "Zen cannot be explained"? Did they also discover the "heliocentric theory of Copernicus "? I think it's possible. Their discovery is an approximation to the ontology of the universe, but it feels counterintuitive. So, they had no choice but to say "can't say". This shows what? Explain how difficult it is to truly "let go".

Let’s just say Dharma and knowledge. Buddhism does not deny that in fact, there is no name for "Dharma-Appearance-Consciousness-Only" in Buddhism. It is just a mixture of the two terms "Dharma-Appearance and Consciousness-Only". Dharma phase refers to the essential appearance (body phase) of all dharma, or refers to its meaning and content (meaning phase). The characteristic of the Consciousness-only Sect is to analyze or classify the Dharma, so it is also called Dharma-Xiang Sect. The consciousness in consciousness-only is the essence of the mind. There is no reality apart from the manifestation of consciousness, which is called consciousness-only. That is to say, we believe that all phenomena outside our own mind are subjective (seeing points) and objective (dividing) manifested by the eight consciousnesses themselves. We also regard the similar shapes of recognized objects as reflected images in the mind and consider them to be real. There is, and the object itself (essence) as the object of knowledge also emerges from the seeds in Alaya consciousness. Therefore, there is no other reality except consciousness. It is called consciousness-only without realm, or according to the meaning that everything changes from consciousness. , and is called the change of consciousness. This theory can be divided into causes and effects. Causes can change, cause changes, and arise. All existences arise from the seeds in Alaya consciousness. The effect can change, and it can also cause effect change and condition change. The result is the difference between subjective and objective in eight consciousness and acts on the object.

Buddhism has experienced more than two thousand years of changes, especially Zen Buddhism after the sinicization of Buddhism, which opened up the door to human wisdom. Unfortunately, this knowledge is vast and profound, and there are too few people who have both the courage and wisdom to approach it. All knowledge is stored in the sutra collection pavilions of major monasteries and shelved. Those who have the courage and wisdom to approach it are classified as aliens. Because, in China, traditional orthodoxy and Taoism all respect "The Analects of Confucius", just like Christians all respect " Bible ".

However, people blindly respect "The Analects of Confucius", and few people have asked what the "Analects of Confucius" is. I think Tian Xiaofei said it well. She said: "None of the virtues advocated in the Analects of Confucius is easy to achieve. People in the world say that Chinese culture is ' Confucian culture', but they never thought that the moral norms advocated by Confucian are nothing more than Our ideals are not our reality." She understood "The Analects" clearly.

"I heard that you have now lost your eyesight and cannot write, and you must be in great pain sometimes. So maybe you will be happy to know that in the past twenty years, I have been everywhere, in Japan, the United States, Norway , and other provinces. or Paris, men and women, young and old, can be heard talking about you with the same admiration, trust, and gratitude expressed in this letter. The world is crazy, inhumane, and corrupt, but you have always been sober, gentle, and spotless. . May God bless you." This is the sentence in the love letter written by the famous French talented writer Françoise Sagan to Jean Paul Sartre. Most people know about , Sartre and , but very few people know about , Sargan and . In fact, both Sartre and Sagan belong to the category of people who " are worthy of heaven and cannot be humbled by others". Although they may have never been exposed to Buddhism, they have all opened the door to wisdom.

"Sometimes everything is despairing. Sometimes it is prosperous. Sometimes it is full of pride. Sometimes it plummets. It is the same for everyone in the world. The ups and downs are life, and the ups and downs are life." This is the life described by Xue Xiaochan. In fact, such a life is not far from Zen.

Therefore, we ordinary people should still start from "the only way the Dharma is" and have "alaya consciousness" in mind. Maybe, we and Buddha will also meet. However, meeting the Buddha does not need to be the goal of our life. Whether you meet them or not, it all depends on fate.
