[Sidenotes on the Creation of the Four Monks in the Early Qing Dynasty]

In the history of Chinese painting, the Four Monks in the Early Qing Dynasty are a unique combination. They were not the mainstream creators at the time, nor were they firm believers. They lived their lives as monks and laymen. However, his innovative spirit made a great contribution to the painting world and had a profound influence on the subsequent Xin'an Painting School, Yangzhou Painting School , and Jinling School .

has been writing "Shibei from the Zen Sea - A Study of Famous Painting Monks in Chinese Past Dynasties" for the past few years. The first half of the year is the final stage of writing and requires a lot of illustrations. In the combing of text with pictures and texts, it seems that the shadows of the four monks are present in dreams, and their paintings always come to mind, so I recorded this feeling with a brush of ink.

One of them is Hongren plum blossom appreciation picture. Hongren lived a difficult life. After he became a monk, he found sustenance in calligraphy and painting. The style of his paintings is very high, which is similar to the nobility of plum blossoms. After his death, his friends planted plum blossoms in front and behind his tomb. He was called a "plum fanatic".

The second one is kuncanwalking meditation picture. Among the four monks, Kuncan has the strongest faith. Influenced by his grandmother since he was a child, he has the ambition to become a monk. He became engaged at home and became a monk. Nanjing was a blessed place for him, and he practiced very highly. He resigned from his position as abbot and settled in a cottage. His landscape paintings are bold and bold, with profound artistic conception.

The third one is the picture of Shi Tao visiting the garden. Shi Tao was born into a royal family and became a monk at the age of four to avoid disaster. The most unrestrained life. He has a wide range of artistic interests. He has excellent works on figures, landscapes, flowers and birds, calligraphy, and theory. He is an unparalleled talent. In his later years, he lived in Yangzhou, China. He applied the theoretical system of "searching for all the strange peaks to make drafts" to his life, that is, he made plans for gardening and landscaping. Today, the garden he designed in China, Suzhou, is handed down to the world.

The fourth one is the Eight Crane Viewing Pictures. Bada Shanren lived mostly in Nanchang , and his simple and interesting works have set up a monument in the history of Chinese painting. Among the four monks, he lived the longest, reaching eighty years old. For this reason, his creative system is the most complete, and he has a unique look in his calligraphy, landscape, flower and bird painting creation.

There are so-called celebrities in the contemporary world who majored in oil painting. After returning from studying abroad, they became public knowledge and claimed that China has not had a good painting in the past five hundred years. The works of the four monks in the early Qing Dynasty are a mirror. His paintings use traditional brushwork and innovative features, which are worthy of being remembered by future generations. There are still many imperfections in this creation. I hope teachers will correct me. I only express my feelings about the staged creation!
