After birth, due to the special physiological structure and metabolism of newborns, some normal physiological phenomena are easily mistakenly considered by novice parents to be sick. Today, I will introduce 10 "special" physiological phenomena for newborns that will gradually disappear as their children grow up without special treatment.
1. Physiological weight loss
Newborns will experience a slight weight loss within 2 to 4 days after birth, and will generally lose about 6% to 9% compared to their weight at birth. This is medically called physiological weight loss. The child's weight will return to normal about 10 days after birth and enters the rapid growth stage.
2. Neonatal toxic erythema
About 30% to 70% of newborns will have systemic erythema 24 to 48 hours after birth, and may appear on the chest, back, face and limbs. At the beginning, it manifests as papules . The papules will gradually become severe the second day after birth, forming erythema, but this erythema will generally disappear on the third day after birth and does not require special treatment.
3. Physiological jaundice
Physiological jaundice usually occurs on the 2nd to 3rd days after the birth of a newborn, and resolves on the 7th to 14th days, and the prognosis of is good. The main reason for physiological jaundice is that the hypoxic environment in which the fetus is in the uterus will stimulate the production of red blood cells and too much, which will cause the bilirubin to be more sources than adults after birth. In addition, the neonatal hepatocytes have poor intake, binding and excretion of bilirubin, so physiological jaundice will occur.
4. Miliary
White spots may appear subcutaneously at the tip of the nose within 1 to 2 weeks after birth. This is caused by the immature sebaceous glands, which leads to sebaceous aggregation and obstruction in the sebaceous glands, and often disappear within 2 weeks after birth.
5. Horse teeth
There are often small yellow-white spots on the midline of the upper palate and gingival margin of the newborn. This is generally called epithelial beads , commonly known as "horse teeth" or " plate teeth ", which is caused by the accumulation of epithelial cells or the accumulation of mucous gland secretions. This kind of spots will generally disappear within a few weeks to months after the child is born. New parents should not use needles to break the spots or wipe them hard with a towel to avoid causing infection.
6. Breast enlargement
In the late stage of pregnancy, the estrogen in the mother's body will have an impact on the fetus. Therefore, within 1 week of the newborn's birth, both boys and girls may experience breast enlargement, which will often subside on its own 2 to 3 weeks after birth. Parents must remember not to squeeze the child's chest to avoid infection.
7. Qingji
Newborns often have large blue-gray spots with varying sizes, irregular shapes and not higher than the skin surface at lumbar sacral , buttocks and back. This is caused by pigmentation and will mostly disappear when the child is 4 years old or slightly older.
8.Shocking
Newborns often experience local muscle twitching after falling asleep, especially fingers or toes that tremble gently, or when they are slightly stimulated (such as strong light, sound or vibration, etc.), they show that their hands are spreading upwards and quickly withdrawn, and sometimes they are accompanied by crying. These "shocking" phenomena are manifestations of the undeveloped and mature neurological system in the newborn. Parents can calm down by simply pressing the baby's body with their hands.
9. Milk-flowing
The stomach volume of newborns is small, the development of the cardia sphincter has not yet been perfected, and the closure is not strictly, which can easily cause the milk in the stomach to flow and cause milk overflow. This is a physiological phenomenon. Mothers only need to pay attention to the feeding method. For example, after feeding, gently lift the newborn, let his head rest on his mother's shoulder, and pat his back with his hands for 2 to 3 minutes to relieve it. In addition, mothers should also pay attention to not moving the baby immediately after feeding, and let the child go to the right, which can reduce the milk spill.
10.False menstruation
Some girls will experience mild swelling of the labia majora, or a small amount of mucus or bloody secretions in the vagina. This is a normal physiological phenomenon. It usually disappears within 2 to 3 days after birth, and parents do not need to deal with it.
