2020 is the first year of the opening of 5G technology. Countries around the world have begun to deploy 5G network construction, and subsequent 5G applications have also emerged in endlessly. It is reported that my country has already completed the annual construction target of 600,000 5G base stations ahead of schedule, and 5G networks are rapidly spreading. This means that we will be in the encirclement of 5G networks in the future, which makes some people begin to think about whether they will be in a 5G radiation environment for a long time. Will it cause harm to the body? In particular, some time ago, Sohu CEO Zhang Chaoyang's questioning remarks on the harm of 5G millimeter wave radiation caused a wave of waves with one stone. So is 5G millimeter wave radiation enough to cause harm to the human body?
We know that any object in nature (as long as the temperature is higher than absolute zero -273.15℃) will produce electromagnetic wave radiation to the outside world. There are many types of electromagnetic wave radiation, which can be divided into ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation according to the frequency of electromagnetic waves. The wavelength of ionizing radiation is less than 100nm. This part of the radiation is harmful, such as nuclear radiation and X-rays. And the wavelength of non-ionizing radiation is greater than 100nm, this part of the radiation is not harmful to the human body. At present, the 5G millimeter wave used in various countries still belongs to the category of non-ionizing radiation and is relatively safe.
When talking about electromagnetic radiation hazards, not only frequency (wavelength), but also power must be considered. The radiation power of 5G base stations and mobile phones is far less than the safety standards established by our country. Wu Hequan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said in an interview with CCTV: "In terms of base station radiation standards, the US radiation standard for 4G base stations is 600 microwatts per square centimeter, while the electromagnetic radiation standard for 4G base stations in China is only 40 microwatts per square centimeter. The United States must be more than ten times stricter." The radiation dose standard of 5G base stations is the same as that of 4G base stations. According to research and analysis, the power of a 5G communication base station is 40W under normal conditions. At a distance of 10 meters from the base station, the radiation amount is about 3.18 microwatts per square centimeter. The radiation dose is much smaller than my country's power density standards, which can be considered safe.
Compared with the radiation hazards of base stations, the radiation hazards of mobile phones to the human body are actually slightly greater, mainly because the mobile phones are closer to the human body. The electromagnetic radiation of mobile phones is different from that of base stations. Its characteristic is that the weaker the signal, the stronger the radiation. This is mainly related to the design principle of the mobile phone itself. When the signal of the mobile phone is weak, to ensure normal communication, the mobile phone will increase the power of its own antenna, and the electromagnetic radiation will naturally increase accordingly. Studies have shown that the radiation of Apple mobile phones in standby is 17.1 microwatts/cm², while the radiation during calls is 93.1 microwatts/cm². The radiation enhancement is still very obvious, which is why experts recommend putting the mobile phone at night when sleeping. Farther away, or the reason is to put the mobile phone close to your ear after making and receiving calls. Although the radiation hazard of mobile phones is much greater than that of base stations, the radiation dose is still within the national safety standards, so it will not cause harm to the human body.
Moreover, due to the higher frequency of 5G millimeter waves, the loss in the transmission process is greater, therefore, more base stations need to be built to meet the communication needs. The denser the coverage density of the base station, the better the signal of the mobile phone, so that the electromagnetic radiation received by the user will be smaller. Therefore, the dense increase of base stations will not cause greater radiation harm, but can reduce the radiation harm of mobile phones to the human body.
As far as the current 5G network frequency band is concerned, my country uses the Sub-6GHz frequency band with a frequency range of 450MHz to 6Ghz. It belongs to centimeter wave low frequency 5G, and the frequency is much smaller than the millimeter wave scheme advocated by the United States. Therefore, the 5G radiation range is limited, so you don’t have to worry about the radiation problems caused by the popularization of 5G in the future.
