My name is Liu Saiqin, deputy chief physician, member of the Communist Party of China, director of the Department of Geriatric Diseases of Zhuzhou People's Hospital and secretary of the Party branch of the 20th Branch. Time flies. From entering the sacred medical hall of Xiangya Medical College of Central South University in 2000, to entering Zhuzhou People's Hospital in 2009 to becoming a real clinician, my fate with medicine has gone through 22 years. Looking back on the past 20 years, I have shed sweat and tears, and I have been persistent and confused, but for me, I am more moved.
I still remember it was April 2016, when I was going to the countryside to support me at Liling Baitutan Hospital. One day, I received a call from the department saying that an old patient I had admitted to my department due to a change in condition. After more than a week of treatment by the medical staff of the department, the patient's condition did not improve, and there was a stubborn heart failure and and breathing failure. The patient and his family strongly asked me to come back and manage it myself.

hurriedly rushed back to the department from Liling . As soon as I stepped into the ward and saw the expectant and trustful eyes of the patients and their families, I felt the value of being a doctor. For several consecutive days, I stayed at the patient's bedside every day, conducted physical examinations for the patient in detail, adjusted the speed of various infusion pumps in a timely manner, adjusted the treatment plan in a timely manner, and advised the patient about his well-being and psychological counseling. Seeing the patient improve day by day under my management, my presence as a doctor was greatly satisfied. I know that in the heart of this patient, I am her spiritual pillar, and my position is even higher than that of her family.
Due to work needs, after the patient's condition gradually stabilized, I returned to Liling to work. But just as the patient was about to be discharged from the hospital, the condition suddenly changed, and severe respiratory failure occurred, forcing the patient to rely on ventilators to assist breathing. After consultation with the multi-disciplinary team, it was recommended to transfer to ICU for further treatment. However, I was not here, and no one could do the ideological work of the patient. I used my Sunday break to rush to the ward and patiently explained the condition to the patient and his family, explained the necessity of staying in the ICU and comforted the patient. With my efforts, the patient was finally sent to the ICU for treatment. However, because I could not adapt to the ICU environment, the patient strongly asked to return to our ward after 5 days.
As the disease progresses, the patient developed multi-organ failure . When the patient was dying, he still strongly asked his family to transfer me back from Liling Baitutan Hospital through the hospital leaders. I drove for nearly 3 hours in the scorching sun and rushed to the patient's bedside. I heard the patient's family say loudly to the patient: "Mom, look, Dr. Liu is back, don't worry!" Although the patient's breathing rapidly and suffering, he still forced his eyes to look at me, his eyes full of reluctance to give up for life, and also conveys his gratitude to me. At that moment, I burst into tears, hating the limitations of medicine and my incompetence. How I want to retain the lives of patients!
After the patient passed away, her son fell to my knees in front of me and sent me an envelope to express his gratitude, but I politely refused. I said, it’s a pity that I failed to retain my grandma’s life, and all this is what we should do. He said that although there are regrets in the final outcome, the family can understand it because there are always some places that medicine cannot achieve. Moreover, throughout the process, the hospital and doctors have been working hard. Facing the sincerity of the patient's family, I couldn't help but burst into tears.
At this time, the softest part in my heart was touched. After more than ten years of medical treatment, I have worked too hard and too much effort, and sometimes I have been misunderstood and questioned. But compared with this incomparable touch, those are not worth mentioning. Thank God for giving me such a true and good profession. I firmly believe that this true and good profession can dim all fame and fortune in the world.
I often remind myself: people first, life first, as a Communist Party member and a medical worker, we must not forget our original aspirations, keep our mission in mind, and serve the people wholeheartedly. We must be anxious about what the patients are anxious about, think about what the patients think, help the patients need, and continuously improve the level of medical technology and medical service capabilities, because the health of the people is the greatest wish of all our medical workers.
