Although Zhang Xueliang was under house arrest for decades, Chiang Kai-shek treated Zhang Xueliang well. Later, Chiang Kai-shek saw that Zhang Xueliang was in a low mood and invited Zhang Xueliang's wife Zhao Yidi over. After that, Zhang Xueliang entered the life of a nursing home ahead of schedule. At that time, some people came back from abroad and specially brought Zhang Xueliang some foreign pastries and food and drinks that foreigners like. The war outside is raging. Many people think that Zhang Xueliang's life is enviable. Only Zhang Xueliang knows his depression. Especially after being placed under house arrest, he never returned to his hometown in Northeast China and did not offer a stick of incense to his father Zhang Zuolin.
In 1949, Zhang Xueliang had been imprisoned for more than ten years. Despite this, Zhang Xueliang was also very concerned about the war outside. During his days under house arrest, Zhang Xueliang wrote many thoughts and feelings. In fact, as early as 1946, domestic calls for the release of Yang Hucheng and Zhang Xueliang were getting louder and louder, but Chiang Kai-shek remained unmoved.
Chiang Kai-shek frantically killed General Yang Hucheng before escaping to Taiwan. After arriving in Taiwan, Chiang Kai-shek was afraid that his actions would cause public outrage, so Chiang Kai-shek transferred Zhang Xueliang to many places in Taiwan.
At first, Chiang Kai-shek ordered Zhang Xueliang to be moved to Shoushan, Kaohsiung, and later to Inshang Hot Spring. Zhang Xueliang lived here for seven years. It was not until 1957 that Zhang Xueliang was moved back to Kaohsiung.
The area where Zhang Xueliang can move freely is less than 200 meters in diameter. Chiang Kai-shek even went crazy in order to monitor Zhang Xueliang, as if he was suffering from persecution paranoia. Since he was imprisoned in the year of the Xi'an Incident and then moved to Taiwan, Zhang Xueliang never had the chance to return to his hometown in Northeast China.
In the 1990s, Zhang Xueliang finally gained true freedom.In 1995, Zhang Xueliang, who had been under house arrest by Chiang Kai-shek for more than half a century, immigrated from Taiwan to live in the United States. At this time, Zhang Xueliang couldn't wait to see his two grandsons. Zhang Xueliang's fourth son, Zhang Lulin, was sent to the United States in 1938 to be raised by Zhang Xueliang's friends. The eldest grandson of the young marshal
Zhang Xueliang’s four sons, Zhang Lulin, were only eight years old when they were sent to the United States.
