Although China has issued warnings many times, some European politicians still go their own way and do not care about the negative impact of infiltration into Taiwan on China-EU relations. According to reports, seven cross-national and cross-party members of the European Parliament participated in the "International Trade Council" delegation, visited Taiwan and met with Tsai Ing-wen. According to Taiwan's foreign affairs department, Vice Chairman of the "International Trade Council" Asima Kopulo will exchange views with the Taiwan authorities in the fields of economy, environmental protection, medical care, etc., promote "economic and trade cooperation between Taiwan and the EU ", and work together for global "democratic resilience". Zhang Dunhan, spokesperson for Tsai Ing-wen's office, also said that the European Parliament has repeatedly introduced the "Taiwan Friendship Act", which fully demonstrates its "international support" and high concern for Taiwan.
In recent times, the EU's public opinion on China has shown a clear shift. After leaders of many EU countries met with China, China-EU relations showed signs of easing. The visit of EU Council President Michel to China has brought hope to the development of China-EU relations. However, the European Parliament, as one of the three major institutions of the EU, has always "held back" China-EU relations. While demonstrating its own presence, it has repeatedly provoked China on the Taiwan issue and tried every means to encourage the EU to confront China.
In fact, this operation of the European Parliament is very puzzling. In recent times, the relationship between the European Union and the United States has been relatively tense. It can be seen that after experiencing the Russia-Ukraine conflict and the energy crisis , the phrase "Europe's awakening" is no longer just talk. EU countries decided to unite to safeguard their own interests and actively seek to get rid of US control. Major EU countries, including Germany and France, clearly realize that there is no benefit to them from being at odds with China. Only by proactively pushing China-EU relations back on track can the EU bring tangible benefits.
The European Parliament has taken actions that run counter to the wishes of the EU, in fact, in order to find its own sense of existence. You must know that the European Union is not a country, but a relatively loose organization. Since the European Parliament does not have decision-making power, the European Parliament is gradually marginalized. If it cannot "show its face" frequently, the European Parliament may eventually be abolished. As a result, in order to keep their jobs, members of the European Parliament can only reflect their importance by constantly looking for trouble. It has become a common practice of the European Parliament to visit Taiwan and say a few innocuous words to senior officials in Taiwan.
Although the European Parliament shows its presence everywhere, it only dares to make small fuss and does not dare to really touch China's bottom line. After all, no matter how marginalized the European Parliament is, it is still a part of the EU. In terms of overall strategy, it still needs to be consistent with the EU. Therefore, when Tsai Ing-wen warmly received the visiting delegation, talked endlessly about how Taiwan and the EU are "partners with similar ideas", and boasted about Taiwan's "democratic achievements" and trade results, the members of the European Parliament did not have any big fluctuations, let alone expressed support for "democratic countries". Instead, in front of Tsai Ing-wen, he reiterated that the EU adheres to the one-China policy.
Except for semiconductors, the trade volume Europe obtains from Taiwan is far less than a fraction of its trade with mainland China. This group of congressmen seemed to be expressing support for the Taiwan authorities, but in fact they fell into "self-kidnapping." Currently, some European politicians are in a state of confusion. When the European Union unites to fight against the hegemony of the United States, these politicians who follow the United States begin to lose their own direction.
The one-China principle has become the consensus of the international community. Any provocation is meaningless. I believe that with the growth of mainland China's strength, this kind of boring political hype will disappear sooner or later.
