According to the Capitol Hill report on October 8 local time, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are investigating E. coli infections in many states and say that this may be related to frozen falafels sold by food supermarket chain Olezi (ALDI).

Symptoms of infection with Escherichia coli include stomach cramps , diarrhea and vomiting. It is reported that 20 people have been infected with the E. coli strain O121 in six states including Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, , and 5 people have been hospitalized, and one of them has hemolytic uremic syndrome. There is currently no death reported.
Of the 18 people interviewed by the CDC and FDA, 15 reported that they had shopped at ALDI, and six of them said they had eaten the Earth Grown brand frozen falafel sandwich purchased at ALDI a week before the symptoms appeared. ALDI recalled Earth Grown brand vegan traditional falafels and garlic and herb falafels from the store on the 7th due to possible E. coli in the food. The sandwiches were sold in 38 U.S. states and the District of Columbia before being recalled.
CDC said that the true number of people infected with E. coli may be higher than the reported number, and the infection may not be limited to states with known infections, because it usually takes 3 to 4 weeks to determine whether the patient's symptoms are E. coli infection. The onset dates of verified cases reported are between July 13 and September 13.
