Latvia, like Lithuania, is a member of the Baltic countries . They were all originally union republics of the Soviet Union. In 2004, Latvia joined NATO , and later joined EU . Therefore, Latvian President Levitz also participated in this NATO summit and made wild claims that if Russia is not prevented from attacking and invading Ukraine , then China will be next to take similar actions.
He obviously meant that mainland China would take action against Taiwan. We have repeatedly emphasized that Ukraine is a sovereign country and Taiwan is an integral part of China that can never be separated and is China's territory. Then I don’t understand why the leaders of so many countries insist on stirring up this muddy water.
What I don’t even understand is that Latvia is really thousands of miles away from China. Regardless of its land area and population, it is still a small country. It originally relied on some financial and trade cooperation with China. Why should we jump out and go against China?
Let me first tell you that this is not the first time that Latvia has gone against mainland China on the Taiwan issue. As early as 1991, when mainland China established diplomatic relations with Latvia, it should have severed all official ties with Taiwan. However, Latvia wanted to have both sides, so after establishing diplomatic relations with mainland China, it had some consular-level cooperation with Taiwan. Later, it corrected the situation when it could not withstand the pressure.
In 2019, Latvia made another move to stimulate China. That year, it regarded China, Russia and some countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States as major threats to the country. It is easy to understand that Russia and the CIS countries also have it. It turns out that Latvia is a republic of the Soviet Union. After independence, many similar countries have very strong feelings of fear and hatred towards Russia.
As for the CIS countries, they are also in its periphery, and they were once in the same camp. They will definitely be separated after a long time, and the separation is particularly serious. It is understandable to be wary of each other.
However, China has good cooperation with Latvia. Latvia relies heavily on Chinese loans and has received a lot of benefits from China in some very practical fields. But why should it go against China? There are two reasons.
First, Latvia is a member of NATO. When China and the United States had good relations, they had little impact on countries like Latvia. It maintains normal relations with the United States and can also maintain fairly good relations with China. This is no problem and the United States will not object.
However, as the relationship between China and the United States becomes increasingly cold and stiff, the United States will look at how Latvia treats China. If Latvia continues to use a large amount of loans to China and continue to cooperate with China in many areas of pragmatic cooperation, the United States will look at how Latvia treats China. When it comes to doing business, the United States will knock Latvia. The Latvian government is well aware of this matter, so they must turn against China and distance themselves from China in a very short period of time, in order to gain favor with the United States.
The second point is also very important, that is Russia. As China-Russia relations get closer and closer, back to back and side by side, it has become the best relationship in history. Latvia, which itself hates Russia, and a group of similar countries such as Lithuania, out of fear and hatred of Russia, are actually angry at China and have some dissatisfaction with China, and they also want to drift away from China. .
This is the reason why Latvia, which is originally so far away from China, frequently intervenes in Taiwan issues and other mainland Chinese affairs issues. The first is the United States, and the second is Russia.
