Yonghap News Agency quoted the local fire department as saying that at around 16:22 local time, a five-story building under demolition in the East District, Gwangju City suddenly collapsed. A bus parked at a nearby bus stop was buried by a collapsed object, and many people were injured and killed.

reported that 8 staff members used excavators to demolish the building at the time of the incident. They fled in time after they found an abnormality. No casualties of construction workers or pedestrians were found yet. The search and rescue work for the buried people in the bus has been completed, and the fire department is confirming whether other people are buried besides the bus passengers.
