Around 16:00 local time on January 11, an accident occurred in a high-rise apartment under construction in Huatingdong, Xi District, Gwangju City, South Korea. The 23-34th floor exterior walls of the 39-story apartment collapsed. Up to now, a total of three people have been rescued, one of whom is slightly injured, and the six workers who are working on the 28th and 31st floors are still missing.

It is understood that the accident occurred during the pouring of the upper concrete layer. The video taken by witnesses showed that the collapse began with a concrete structure in a corner of the apartment, and then tore the tall buildings from top to bottom, making a huge roar like a collapse of mountains, dust swept around, and the scene quickly became chaotic. According to South Korea's " Daily Economic News ", the local fire department is working hard to carry out rescue efforts. At present, 5 of the 6 missing people are in the same position, and the other is slightly far away. In addition, the building still has a risk of further collapse, and 479 nearby residents have been evacuated urgently. The detailed cause of the accident is still under further investigation.

According to Yonhap News Agency , residents near the accident site said that the accident was a "predictable accident". The construction party and local governments could do something to avoid a tragedy. Previously, there have been safety problems such as bricks and stones falling and plywood falling on the construction site. Residents have complained about this in the past three years, but neither the construction party nor the local government has taken any measures. In addition, local residents also said that the construction party had obvious signs of shortening the construction period and that work had never stopped in bad weather. Relevant experts said that the sharp shortening of construction period is the main reason for the weakening of concrete pressure, but it is still impossible to make accurate judgments based on just a few on-site photos.

Korean Prime Minister Kim Fu-chun ordered the incident on the same day, demanding that the whereabouts of the missing workers be found as soon as possible, and issued relevant emergency orders to the Minister of Fire, the Chief of the State Police and the Mayor of Gwangju, requiring the protection of the safety of rescue personnel on the scene and nearby residents, taking all measures to minimize the losses, and conduct a thorough safety inspection of the construction site.
