British think tank Times Higher Education announced the 2022 world university ranking results on the 2022 year. Tsinghua University and Peking University tied for 16th, which is the highest ranking in history for mainland Chinese universities.
This year, a total of 1,662 universities from 99 countries and regions were on the list. Oxford University ranked first for the sixth consecutive year, Caltech and Harvard University ranked second and third respectively.
Mainland China has become the fourth largest country and region with the fourth largest number of universities on the list (97), of which 8 universities are on the list for the first time, second only to the United States (183), Japan (118) and the United Kingdom (101).
A record-breaking 10 universities in mainland China have ranked among the top 200. In addition to Tsinghua University and Peking University, the top 200 universities include Fudan University , Zhejiang University , Shanghai Jiaotong University , China Science and Technology , Nanjing University , Wuhan University , Southern University of Science and Technology and Huazhong University of Science and Technology. Phil Barty, Chief Knowledge Officer of Times Higher Education , said that world-renowned universities have long been ranked among the top in the rankings with their historical reputation, global status and reliable income. Data from the institution shows that higher education around the world is undergoing significant changes, with mainland China changing the most rapidly.
He said: "Last year, mainland Chinese universities entered the top 20 for the first time. This year, the number of universities in this echelon doubled, Tsinghua University and Peking University both were on the list, tied for the highest ranking in the history of mainland Chinese universities. Despite the impact of the global epidemic, mainland Chinese universities continue to improve in the Times Higher Education World University Ranking."
Times Higher Education World University Rankings measure the comprehensive strength of universities based on multiple indicators such as teaching, research, knowledge imparting and internationalization, and is regarded as one of the more authoritative world university rankings.
