— Speech at the 2022 graduate graduation ceremony

Dear classmates and teachers:
Today, we hold the graduation ceremony in a combination of online and offline ways. On behalf of the school, I would like to extend my warm congratulations to the students who have successfully completed their postgraduate studies and are about to open a new chapter in their life! I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the mentors who have carefully cultivated your tutors, cared for and supported your relatives and friends, and all the teachers, students and staff who have worked hard for you!
In this special graduation season, the epidemic in Beijing continued to recur, disrupting everyone's normal graduation rhythm. When the thesis defense meeting cannot be held offline, you will accept questions from the defense committee online; when the social epidemic has spread and affected the meeting with employers, you will participate in the Metaverse Recruitment Double Election Meeting ; when you cannot graduate and dinner, you will turn the "distance meal" into Dongcao's group night run and Zicao's board game. While completing all aspects of the graduation process, you also practice your efforts to participate in the battle to protect Tsinghua University in the epidemic prevention and control, leaving behind a series of "graduation photos" wearing protective clothing. We are about to leave school. Some students' next accommodation, transportation and other issues have not been finally implemented, and some students can only attend the graduation ceremony online. In this case, students will inevitably feel more uncertain about the future.
Recalling that when I graduated from my PhD more than 20 years ago, I also felt uneasy and confusion in my heart when I faced different employment choices. In the end, I followed my inner academic interests and chose to be a "green pepper" to continue my doctoral thesis research and serve major national needs. However, there is uncertainty about whether academic research can make breakthroughs, and I am also ready to sit on the bench for ten years. I understand that uncertainty does not only appear when we make choices, but uncertainty will accompany us throughout our lives. What we think is certainty has various uncertainties behind it, on the contrary, what we think is uncertainties must also be some certainty behind it. We can analyze and think from three perspectives.
First of all, from the perspective of the individual, although the trajectory of life has changed a lot, the original aspiration and mission cannot change, and we must be righteous. The path of life is taken step by step, and every key choice may lead to different life changes. When there are too many options and the choice is too difficult, how can you clarify your mood and clarify the priority of your choice? It depends on the inner value persistence.
Looking back at the old China more than a hundred years ago, in the bitter wind and rain of the country being humiliated, the people being troubled, and civilization being covered with dust, even the future and destiny of the country and nation are dark and unclear, and it is even more difficult for individuals to make the right life choices. But there are a group of young people with ideals who, with their firm and persistence of "not excluding their ambitions when safety is not the same, and they are not as dangerous as the same," sacrificed their lives and continued one after another, and wrote a heroic chapter in their life on the road to saving the nation. Comrade Li Dazhao, one of the founders of the Communist Party of China, finally firmly chose Marxism and communism in the face of the stormy struggle situation and various "isms". He firmly believed that "the world in the future will be the world of the red flag", and together with the early Communists, sowed the spark of Marxism on the land of China, arousing the awakening of the nation.
What Li Dazhao firmly believes in is "righteousness", because it reveals the general laws of human beings to understand and transform the world. Social reality problems that seem to be uncertain are unified in this law, thus showing certainty. The people, and only the people, are the driving force for creating world history. With such great righteousness in mind, the Communist Party of China has led the Chinese people to successfully embark on the path of Chinese modernization and created a new form of human civilization.
students, the world today is in a period of turbulent and change. I hope you will forge a strong sense of community with a shared future for mankind, adhere to the people first, firmly stand on the right side of history and on the side of human progress, not be confused by fame and fortune, not be blocked by selfish desires, and not be blocked by difficulties, and have great justice in mind, so that youth can bloom gorgeous flowers in unremitting struggle for the motherland, the nation, the people, and mankind.
Second, from the perspective of the relationship between individuals and society, although the role of life changes, responsibilities must be the first to be changed, and we must be brave enough to take responsibility for . Chinese traditional culture emphasizes that responsibility for dealing with people is the first priority. When you enter a new workplace, don’t expect what you can get, but ask yourself what you should bear.
At the beginning of 2020, the new coronavirus epidemic came suddenly. Professor Zhang Linqi, of the School of Medicine, decided to form a vaccine and antibody drug research and development team. His doctoral student Li Mingqian was the first to register and became the first official member of the team. On the eighth day of the first lunar month, she rushed back to school and accelerated research and development with her teachers and classmates in her team day and night, and did not dare to stop for a moment. At present, the new coronavirus vaccine she participated in has entered the clinical trial stage. She said that every vaccine is a small seed and one day it will grow into a warrior who protects life and health. I know that many of you are like Li Mingqian, who are on the front line in anti-epidemic research and epidemic prevention and control work. I am proud of you, and even like your bravery in the critical moment!
students, Tsinghua people must have a strong sense of mission and responsibility. No matter which position they are in, they should stand up when needed, be brave to be "big guys", be brave to be "warriors", shoulder responsibilities without hesitation, use intelligence to solve problems, and make due contributions to the prosperity of the country, national rejuvenation, people's happiness and the progress of human civilization.
Third, from a longer-term perspective of time and space, although the prospects of life are diverse, they cannot change if they are pragmatic and willing to work hard. Only by holding the future is the one who is in the hands of. "Although the road is near, you will not be able to reach it if you don't do it; even if things are small, you will not succeed if you don't do it." The future is not something that falls from the sky or calculates it by fingers, but is done bit by bit with your hands. What kind of future we can achieve depends on the ideals we set in our hearts. Only with the ideal of justice can we build the future and achieve a just cause according to our ideals. Only by achieving justice can we prove that we have the ideal of justice.
Our old principal Wang Dazhong Academician, after graduating in 1958, as a young backbone, he started his own business with a team with an average age of 23 and a half years. In 6 years, he built the first shielded test reactor independently designed, built and operated in my country. He led the team to design and build the world's first 5-megawatt shell integrated low-temperature core heating reactor and the world's first 10-megawatt ball bed modular high-temperature gas-cooled experimental reactor. In December last year, the world's first ball bed modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor nuclear power plant demonstration project developed and designed by Tsinghua University was connected to the grid to generate power. This is the result of the unity and hard work of generations of Tsinghua people who "advance difficulties and unite as one." When we saw the gray-haired Academician Wang Dazhong receive the National Highest Science and Technology Award certificate from General Secretary Xi Jinping, we were filled with emotion and respect! The generation of young people represented by Academician Wang Dazhong have used more than 60 years of hard work and silent struggle to fulfill the sonorous oath of "creating the spring of the motherland's career with our hands."
General Secretary Xi Jinping pointed out that Chinese youth in the new era are born at the right time and have a heavy responsibility on their shoulders. The stage for displaying their talents is extremely broad, and the prospect of realizing their dreams is extremely bright. Students, the next twenty or thirty years will be a great time for you to serve your motherland, contribute to society, and make achievements. I hope you will start with me and from now on, roll up your sleeves and work hard, move forward steadily, bravely overcome all unknown challenges on the journey forward, and make the dream of a strong country a beautiful reality in your hands.
