Editor's note:
"We adhere to the concept that green waters and green mountains are gold and silver mountains , adhere to the integrated protection and systematic governance of mountains, rivers, forests, fields, lakes, grasslands and sands. The ecological civilization system is more sound, and the ecological environment protection has undergone historic, turning point and overall changes. Our motherland's sky is bluer, the mountains are greener, and the water is clearer." The report of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China comprehensively summarizes the work in the past five years and the great changes in the new era in the ten years, pointing out that ecological environment protection has undergone historic, turning point and overall changes.
. On the side of the mother river of the Chinese nation, the sky is high and the water is wide, and the grass is abundant, and the trees are abundant. Now it is a common beauty on both sides of the straits.
Changes are created by people, and green waters and green mountains are also protected by people. In Henan, there were father and son who had been relaying for 70 years and patrolled the river in the Victory Canal of Wuzhi, Jiaozuo; some young people took root in the protection area to "guard birds" after graduation; there were also gate guards who had been stationed all their lives; and three generations of forest guards stood on the old path of the Yellow River to build a green wall Great Wall ... They are tiny figures who protect the Yellow River, and are also important roles in defending the peace and building a good ecology. They together constitute the Yellow River Guardian Alliance.
70 years ago, when Chairman Mao Zedong inspected the Yellow River, he proposed to "do the Yellow River's affairs well." Now the guardians of the Yellow River are using their own practical actions to do the Yellow River affairs well. Starting today, we will approach them, record their story of guarding the river, and pay tribute to their efforts for the Yellow River every year. Hello, guardians of the Yellow River.

People's Victory Canal Head Gate

Taohuayu Water Diversion Canal
70 years ago, when People's Victory Canal located in Wuzhi, Jiaozuo successfully opened the gate to release water, the Pingyuan Daily recorded the grand scene at that time: "When the water peak arrives, the carnival arrives there, and people from afar come to visit by boats, trains, and ox carts. The people in the irrigation area welcomed the water from the field channels like welcoming their relatives."
The Yellow River, which once made the people love and hate, became a "risk river" because of the opening of the People's Victory Canal. Yellow River water enriched the fields and moistened the hearts of the people.
But what many people don’t know is that for 70 years, there are still workers behind them stationed beside the People’s Victory Canal. They monitor the water conditions and check the dangers. Sometimes they kneel on the river to chisel ice, and sometimes they jump into the river to block rat holes with their bodies... They defend the gate, protect the water of the Yellow River, and protect the thousands of citizens on both sides of the river.

"We must do the work of the Yellow River well!"
Just after completing the retirement procedures, Zhou Chuanhe received a call from his leader, "...We are not in front line now. Lao Zhou, can we work for another two years, make use of our remaining energy, and bring young people to the point of taking over?"
60-year-old Zhou Chuanhe is an employee of the General Administration Office of the People's Victory Canal Security Center of Henan Province. In 1980, he took the baton to guard the People's Victory Canal from his retired father, and worked for 42 years.
The head gate of the People's Victory Canal where he is located is located in Wuzhi County, Jiaozuo City, Henan Province. It is the first large-scale Yellow River diversion project built in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River after the founding of New China. As the first irrigation canal in New China, it is adjacent to the Yellow River and the Wei River in the north. The head gate is located at the Qinchang Dam on the north bank of the Yellow River and 1,500 meters west of the Beijing-Guangzhou Railway Bridge. It ends the history of "the Yellow River is full of harm, and the only one is rich". After the People's Victory Canal was irrigated, it transported water to the Weihe River and the two major water systems of the Yellow River and the Haihe River from south to north. The downstream irrigation areas were built like mushrooms after a rain. After 70 years of irrigation, the People's Victory Canal provided important water conservancy support and guarantee for the bumper grain harvest in the irrigation area and the development of local economic and social economy and society, and truly became a "happy canal".
Zhou Chuanhe's father Zhou Hongchang participated in the construction of the People's Victory Canal 72 years ago.In the autumn of 1950, the Yellow River Commission planned and designed the People's Victory Canal, which was called the "Yellow-inducing Irrigation and Sanitation Project" at that time. Zhou Hongchang was transferred from Kaifeng to the then Yellow River Sanitation Project. In the early 1950s, the level of mechanization was low, and the construction mainly relied on manpower. People marked the weight on each stone in the stone factory and relied on human and animal trucks. After several turnovers, the stones with the weight and quantity were transported to the site. In this way, in March 1952, the first phase of the construction task was completed; on October 31 of the same year, Chairman Mao visited the canal head and opened the canal head gate with his own hand. "Water conservancy is the lifeblood of agriculture," he explained, "We must do the work of the Yellow River well!"

To prevent the river from being frozen and broken, they knelt on the surface of the river and chiseled ice
Because of their father's work, Zhou Chuanhe grew up next to the People's Victory Canal. He is as familiar with everything about the People's Victory Canal as his own.
"Water conservancy is the lifeblood of agriculture, we must do the work of the Yellow River well." Chairman Mao's two sentences 70 years ago were placed on both sides of the door of the People's Victory Canal Memorial Hall. Through his father's influence, Zhou Chuanhe was well aware of the importance of the Yellow River water to the people when he was young. His father told him that during the important period of land irrigation every year, the Yellow River water would lead from west to east through the gate of the People's Shengli Canal, rushing to the main canal branch canals, and rush into the farmland full of crops, bringing hope for a year's harvest.
can control water and make it completely useful for people, which is not an easy task. Zhou Chuanhe remembers it deeply. In the winter decades ago, during the coldest days, the water at the gate would be frozen. It was the important winter irrigation period for wheat, and it was still a small matter to be blocked. If the Ice Crack River is not chiseled open as soon as possible, the upstream river water will still flow eastward and block at the gate, which is very easy to cause a breach and the consequences are unimaginable.
"Every time this time, there are only a group of people who kneel by the river, use tools to chisel the ice open, and let the river water pass through." Zhou Chuanhe recalled.
Scenarios like this happen from time to time. For the workers stationed in the People's Victory Canal, the river patrol is a "basic skill" that lasts for 70 years.
"In that era, my father worked very hard and had poor conditions. He patrolled the river by walking. One person had to be responsible for more than ten or twenty kilometers at most, so he could walk with two legs and two eyes to look carefully." Zhou Chuanhe said.
The most fear of heavy rain in the river patrol is that the heavier it rains, the faster it will run. "I'm afraid that heavy rain will cause the main canal branch canal to break." Zhou Chuanhe said that decades ago, communication was underdeveloped, and once it was discovered that pipes were flooded , "In case of heavy rain, an originally small hole may cause a dam breaking under the impact of huge water flow within a few minutes. The main gate must be informed in the shortest time, and the leakage must be blocked and allocated. The degree of opening and closing of the gate. "

He jumped into the river and blocked the rat hole with his body
1980, his father retired, and Zhou Chuanhe officially took up his post and became a channel patrolman. In the second half of the night in April 1983, he and his colleagues were patrolling as usual, and a rat hole was found near the gate house of Hezhuang, Dongganqu.
"It looks abnormal. The cave is constantly emitting water. Seeing that it is getting bigger and bigger, you must immediately block it." Zhou Chuanhe and his colleagues jumped into the river as soon as possible. In the early morning of April, the river water was cold and the cave entrance collapsed very quickly. Zhou Chuanhe used his body to close the hole to reduce the collapse area. Another colleague used a shovel to continuously bring mud. Zhou Chuanhe staggered his body bit by bit and quickly blocked the soil into the rat hole... In this way, half an hour before and after, the rat hole was finally blocked, avoiding a breach.
Until now, whenever Zhou Chuanhe recalls, the thrilling scenes always appear in his mind as clearly as a movie. "I'm afraid that if there is a breach, a large amount of water will rush into the downstream fields, and the crops that the villagers have worked hard to plant will be in vain." Zhou Chuanhe said that he often used this as an example later to warn young colleagues who had just started working.
Even in the 1990s, when communication methods were progressing, communication equipment would be interrupted unexpectedly and information was not smooth. "Once, a large amount of water was released from the upstream, but the downstream water volume was enough. Because of the communication failure, the downstream hub could not be contacted, and the situation was very critical."Zhou Chuanhe recalled that without receiving any information, he watched the water rise quickly, "I can't contact the dispatcher, the phone is blocked, the old saying goes, water and fire are ruthless, the water volume is large and the flow rate is fast. If the channel is not smooth, danger will happen in minutes. "
cannot hesitate when encountering dangerous situations. If you do not make a decision, it is very likely that the main channel will burst. Zhou Chuanhe made a quick decision, urgently adjust the gate, and transport water. He was very nervous, but his hands were very stable when operating. "At this moment, the staff sent by the superiors arrived and informed us of the situation ahead. Everyone worked together to avoid a dangerous situation. "
The work of guarding
has been full of 70 years of river patroling has not been interrupted by technological progress. The river patroling sounds simple, but in fact it requires the most experience accumulation. If you don't pay attention to a small hole, you can become a big hole. The gate entrance will also affect the flow of water passing by because of the broken wood rushing over from the upper reaches of the Yellow River. "The gate opening, the specific opening, can be controlled by the macro-control of through the total dispatch . "Zhou Chuanhe said.
But it is not that easy to "control" nature. "The Yellow River is a big river. It naturally exists in nature. If you want to control it, many external environmental factors cannot be ignored. Silt, sand, impurities and debris will affect the water flow. The river patrol depends on decades of experience. If the machine sounds wrong, there will be situations. If the flow of the branch canal water there is wrong, there will definitely be problems..."
42 years ago, Zhou Chuanhe took the baton guarding the Yellow River from his father, and always kept the safety of the Yellow River in his heart. After training as a channel patrolman, he worked as an irrigation manager and finally came to the main canal hub project. "Every position is the protection of the Yellow River. "Zhou Chuanhe said. After
realized agricultural irrigation on a large scale, the People's Shengli Canal assumed the function of South-to-North Water Diversion and supplying domestic water to cities. However, after the 1990s, urbanization developed rapidly, with many industrial enterprises. The water quality of the Yellow River was polluted from the upper reaches, affecting the middle and lower reaches. The Xiaolangdi Reservoir was built and diversion water and sand was flushed, and the head of the canal was washed more than 3 meters deep. The water quality was poor, the water level was lowered, and the flow rate was small. The guardians of the People's Shengli Canal began a new "journey" of controlling sewage and building pumping water.

Chairman Mao inspected the Yellow River Lounge
"Selected from the canal head gate site, the People's Shengli Canal went through the subsequent stages of water diversion channel blocking and avoiding sewage, silting canals, pumping station water lifting, and the second water diversion channel. "Yue Tao, deputy director of the Canal Heading Branch of the People's Victory Canal Security Center of Henan Province, said, "October this year happened to be the 70th anniversary of Chairman Mao's inspection of the Canal Heading Gate. The People's Victory Canal was built by the people. We will continue to protect here and see it safely spend a 70 years and welcome the wonderful days in the future!"
