A group of Communist Party members, including Liang Xinzhi, secretary of the Foshan branch of the Communist Party of China, Chen Yinggang, organizational committee member, Zhang Yunfeng, Huang Jiang, etc., quickly moved to the Peasant Self-Defense Army station led by Wu Qinqin in the suburbs of Foshan.

html On April 18, Liang Xinzhi learned that the site of the Workers' Congress had been occupied by reactionary military police and yellow union thugs. At that time, the Foshan branch of the Communist Party of China did not understand the origin and nature of the incident and mistakenly believed that it was a provocation by the yellow labor union. Therefore, about 30 people from the workers' picket team and the Peasants' Self-Defense Army returned to Foshan to recover the Workers' Congress. When the team arrived at Yinggang Street, they were attacked by more than 100 armed forces sent by the Kuomintang garrison Pan Zhi and the City Hall Self-Defense Force.
